About Roger Burke
We are from Ipswich, MA and have been coming to Maine for many years. Roger first came with his parents when he was ten and didn't return for fifteen years when he brought his wife. Later they returned with their three children. We are now semi-retired. Roger, a Brown graduate, was a contractor and now does preservation consulting, most recently at Old South Church in Boston. Maddie, a graduate of Montserrat College of Art, is a printmaker and fiber artist. We both think this island and surrounding Penobscot Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It's a place where the biggest going-ons are the Art Shows at the Historical Society. And, no malls.
Roger Burke purchased this Barn in 1982

We had two amazing weeks at the Barn. Islesboro itself is a gem but it was extra special for us because of where we stayed. It was SO relaxing and beautiful. The property is gorgeous with the large expanse of meadow down to the water. We saw bald eagles, a schooner race, incredible fireworks and the Milky Way above us. The fireflies in particular were spectacular. We explored the island but were always happy to get back to the barn. Roger and Maddie were absolutely fabulous hosts and made us feel like family. We had such great conversations! They were gracious and had loads of great tips about island life that were really helpful. Our family feels like we made new friends. Thanks so much for a wonderful time and as our ten year old son said, “Best vacation ever!”
well appointed Maine cabin
The Burke's barn/cabin is incredibly charming, and well stocked with everything you'll need for a week in Maine. The photos are very accurate. Above and beyond what we were expecting were tons of great puzzles, games, books, and a third floor playroom our two kids loved. The only drawback to the house is the mosquitos on the property. We weren't able to spend any time on the deck or the grass on any day, because they were all over us-- even after covering ourselves in bug spray. Regardless, thank you Roger and Maddie for the wonderful introduction to Islesboro!
Wonderful guests! The mosquitos are particularly bad this year, particularly the end of this July.
Restful island retreat with million dollar views and gold-star hosts
Having left coastal Maine some years ago to pursue careers in other, less remarkable, New England states, we were looking to bring our family back to the rocky shoreline for a spell and relax. Looking for that perfect vacation spot, we were lucky enough to come across Roger and Maddy's beautiful house located on the shores of Islesboro, Maine. We spent 5 relaxing nights in this restful and well-equipped retreat. We pegged the fun meter each day during explorations of the island rocky shore, quiet roadways, and enjoyed the summer weather. Lots of running, biking, and swimming to and from the pebble beaches scattered around the island perimeter, followed (always) by excursions for ice-cream. Our hosts made us feel welcome, selflessly provided for our comforts and gave us plenty of room to relax. The house is large, roomy, well-equipped without being ostentatious and is very much designed for family life. Well equipped with extra towels, beds, fireplace, sitting spaces, and books on every wall. Islesboro is a mix of private retreats and ordinary Mainers in a tight-knit community. There are plenty of fine views of Penobscot Bay, open shoreline to wander, and trails to explore. A great place to call home for a few days, tended by a pair of great hosts.
Very summer feel, informal, open
Wonderful view, wonderful overall experience
Croquet, clamming. On the mainland there are antique shops, shopping in downtown Camden or Belfast, Hiking Mt. Battie, scenic drives.
