Farmhouse style board and batting home with stone basement that includes a ramp and wide steps leading to the rear entrance porch. There are four bedrooms. Downstairs one bedroom features a king size bed with en suite bathroom and soaker tub. On the opposite end of the first floor is a bedroom with a queen bed and en suite bathroom with walk-in shower. The upstairs bedrooms have queen size beds. One of the rooms has 2 queen size beds. In addition, there is a
"Hide Out" with a full size bed through the the fourth bedroom. The upstairs full bath with a soaker tub is down the hallway. A 1/2 bath is convenient to the living area. A large front porch (10' by 20') overlooks a small lake with seasonal furniture for your convenience and a large gas grill. The large back porch with a swing and comfortable furniture leads into the house through mahogany french doors. You will enjoy the nice open areas upon entering that make up the dining and living spaces and a kitchen with granite, custom cabinets and stainless steel appliances. The living area offers a cozy sofa, recliners, additional seating, a flat screened tv and gas logs. The downstairs offers 3 ft. doors for accessibility . Our floors are locally milled stained pine planks that have not been sanded smooth which lends itself to our old farmhouse plan. The upstairs bedrooms are carpeted for sound efficiency and warmth for those using this area. There are separate heating and cooling systems for both floors.
A large fire-pit with lots of seating provides guests with great opportunities to gather.

Wedding weekend
This place was perfect for my adult family of 8 to stay in for a weekend wedding in the area. The host was amazing. He kept me updated prior to our visit with details of the home, possible weather conditions, and where to visit while in Mentone. The home was well stocked with everything you may need. Could not have asked for a better weekend and place to stay.

Wonderful
We have traveled to Mentone several times over the years. This was one of the best places we have ever stayed. Beautiful cabin located in close proximity to everything. We plan on going again. And a major item for us is that it is pet friendly. Millie our miniature poodle loved her visit also.

Best Friends Trip
As a group of special Ed teachers and best friends as far back as 30 years, we always taken a little girls’ trip for a few days on winter break. Huckleberry Haven was our favorite place we have stayed in. So cozy to just sit, laugh and talk. So much room. The pictures and decor were more fun to look at than the shops. Special touches such as the peanut brittle, stuff for s’mores, wood and lighter to build a fire in the fire pit we’re just a few of the thoughtful gestures to make you feel welcome. David accommodated us when we had to change our date. He communicated with us and was so helpful. By far, the nicest person we have ever rented from. The Desota Falls very close to the house and definately worth going to see.

Lovely and spacious retreat
My mom has just finished her second round of chemo and we wanted to have a quick trip. This was perfect. The house is beautiful in a lovely location with plenty of space. Two things that surprised me: a gravel road and no cell service. My favorite things were so many bathrooms, all the fun and unique decor everywhere, the extra touches like s’more makings, Lorna Doones, and teas. The host was wonderfully helpful, friendly, and communicative.

Mike and I have been married for 33 adventure filled years. We know there is no perfect house, but its our sweet piece of earth on this side of heaven.
We come from loving families who have encouraged us in our dreams and endeavors. I graduated from the University of Montevallo (twice) and am a high school teacher, pianist and lover of creating. Mike graduated from UAB. He is a RN and an all around creative and determined kind of guy! We have two amazing daughters, Emily and Hannah. Emily graduated from University of Alabama and is married to our "son" Ryan Guin. They have the most incredible little 1 year old son, Cannon. We love him more than life should allow! She owns Emily G. Collection and Emily's Original art.
Hannah graduated from Jeff State in Hospitality and Tourism and has graduated from UAB. She loves living in Birmingham and enjoys all the things that the city offers like theater, concerts, sporting events and she loves her church family.
We moved to Mentone when our girls were 8th and 9th graders. We built a home on the river and lived there for 7 years. Mentone was an interesting place to raise 2 teenage girls...they have both done exceedingly well. Both are very well-rounded and have hearts of gold... what more could we ask for?

Why they chose this property

The feel of this property seemed right when we purchased it 13 years ago. We loved the rustic property of about 2 acres, the views and opportunity to walk around the lake and running space for our dog. As we were designing this house, we felt this house plan fit this property and it feels just right.I am a high school teacher, pianist, and designer, but Mike is the true designer. He has sketched and drawn his entire life. We sketched, erased; sketched, erased, and sketched until it seemed right. We talked to our builder and the work began. Mike comes from lineage of engineers and artists(No, he is not an engineer, but a nurse and a great one at that!) so we built it just the way we wanted; great porches, outdoor spaces, walking, great kitchen and soaker tubs!

What makes this property unique

I grew up on a farm in southern Alabama and my grandparents had an old white farmhouse which led me in this direction to this house plan. Seasonally, the porches were always our visiting areas; add a cup of coffee or a glass of sweet tea and moments were sweet. Mentone gets 4 seasons which are unique in its own way.
Mentone is known in summer for its camps. Children from all over the world come here in the summer for camp. If you hear a bugle call in the distance, the Boy Scout Camp is beyond our back fence. In the summer Mentone is very lush and one can always find a sweet refrain from the heat like a big porch overlooking the lake while feeling a breeze on your face!
Fall is fabulous in Mentone! The Colorfest is a 3-day festival on the mountain including The leaves are gold and scarlet, the air is cool and the smell of oak fires drift in the air. Football and fall festivals at the local schools are in full swing as many locals are, too.
In the winter you will most likely enjoy some snow especially in February If the temperature drops to 27' take a drive over to Cloudmont and watch Gary Jones and his team make snow. Tell him that Barbara and Mike Neel sent you.
Spring in Mentone...new life! The daffodils, narcissus, trillium, lady slippers, mountain laurels, oakleaf hydrangeas, trillium, lady slippers and other natural flora emerge for our enjoyment. There are also various types of fern that are interesting. The dogwood and redbuds are everywhere and just lovely! Even though it is warm during the day, it is usually cool enough for a fire in the firepit... grab your marshmallows! You might want to grab a cup of tea and enjoy the swing that my dad built on the back porch. You will see lots of birds, turkey and deer in the back area. There are native wild blueberries and they seem to win this battle!'
Enjoy the unique benefits of this retreat while you rest, relax, and rejuvenate your spirit and body. Mentone-a place like no other.
