RELAX AT UPMARKET BANG TAO BEACH; avoid crowded beaches/seediness further south

Along the stretch of road known as ‘Millionaire’s Mile”, within a small mixed condo/villa estate, you can choose one of two units. Either our expansive 243 sq metre 3 ensuite bedroom SERENE condo villa OR our 243 sq metre ground floor 3 ensuite bedroom POOLSIDE condo villa (next to 25m adult pool, separate children's wading pool, and sala with lounge chairs and tables). With teak wood floors, wood paneled interiors, ceiling fans (air conditioners as well, should the air flow across all the sliding doors be insufficient), king/queen beds, large en suite terrazzo bathrooms, spacious living and dining rooms, fully equipped European kitchen, all furnished in modern Thai style with regional accents, you may never want to go outside. Shame, as just outside the gates 200 metres across the grass/sand field beacons pristine Bang Tao beach (absent of the rows upon rows of crowded umbrellas and chairs one finds from Surin beach going south).

POOLSIDE CONDO VILLA: The best located condo villa in the Chom Tawan estate as it has a large grassy area for kinds to play in front while only steps away is the 25 metre adult and separate children's pool making it feel like a private pool, particularly as outside of Christmas/New Years most owners in the estate are working elsewhere in Asia. With terra cotta terraces on three sides, you have views of the pool (which looks magical with the lights at night) from the master bedroom, poolside bedroom, and living room. The outdoor dining terrace faces toward the Andaman Sea and enjoys a massive well protected open grass area in front of it. Inside, there are accents from our multi-week driving trip throughout Thailand. It does not get much better than this!

SERENE CONDO VILLA: Some people prefer a higher elevation so this unit is located on the third floor although similar layout and furnishings as the POOLSIDE CONDO VILLA. With balconies all around overlooking the Banyan Tree land it is very private allowing sounds of the birds and sea to relax you ... which is why it is called serene!

About Gordon or Jenny

My wife (British-South African) and I (Australian-Canadian) reside in Hong Kong although we did live in one of our units for a couple years on 'semi-retirement' we set up and furnished all of our places in Phuket as if they were homes rather than simply rental units so our friends and guests could truly enjoy themselves. What that means is that there will be more than the 6 pieces of low end cutlery and plates etc one often gets in typical rental units. We occasionally get back to paradise but do have to work a few more years before we can truly retire - these rentals help us cover the maintenance costs in the meantime.

Why Gordon or Jenny chose Phuket

The square footage/meterage of your accommodation is unusually large giving you space to feel comfortable as well as decorated and kitted out to live in. The tropical foliage and landscaping is amazing. You will not need to rush out to claim your chair by the pool (or your patch of sand on the beach) as the estate is not overpacked with rooms upon rooms of hotel guests. Other than at Christmas there are rarely more than a half dozen or so in residence - that is why the place is for romantics or families even though it is next to the Banyan Tree/Laguna Resort area and enjoys one of the best beaches in Phuket.

What makes this condo unique

One does not appreciate having the upmarket resorts around us as they make sure the beaches are kept clean and not overrun (until one goes further south and sees Surin, Patong, Karon, Kata, etc which party animals seem to like - we do not). Paradise should be about tropical foliage, pristine beaches, relaxed restaurants, and sounds of birds and waves rather than concrete, hawkers, and motors of jet-skis.

A baby cot can be provided if reserved on booking (first come, first serve basis).

Kitchen is kitted out as a home, not a rental property so plenty of pots, pans, cutlery and quality dishes. Two bicycles, one cot...availability permitting; Orientation binder also within residence; maid service provided for some half days depending on length of stay. A very bad experience due to the state of the apartment and false advertising

I will start by saying Gordon seems a very nice person but unfortunately the property we stayed in was nothing like we expected or was advertised.

We were on the ground floor corner apartment which was like living in a goldfish bowl, everybody including the workers used the grass across this apartment to walk on rather than the path so the blinds were closed constantly. It says property type Villa it is an apartment with very thin walls and the noise from the long term tenants above was the worst ever. We complained about this and were told so had others but it continued the whole stay and their young children running around kept us awake at night so we slept during the day when they were out. It advertised a dryer which was not there and Gordon's reply was when it got broken they didn't bother to replace it but had still got it advertised, he said there was a wooden thing to dry your washing on outside. This was filthy so we did our laundry elsewhere, the dishwasher was broken and was still not repaired when we left after our 10 day stay so we had to do the washing up by hand which was also not what we expected. We were told the floors are highly polished and not to wear shoes or wheel our cases in, these floors are a disgrace and we took photo's as they are very badly scratched and in places they are rotting away. From the day we arrived we got covered in bites and this only happened in Gordon's apartment and eventually after complaining they brought in pest control to sort the place out. This apartment needs a total refurbishment as it is very tired and shabby and people also need to know there is nothing in the apartment when you arrive, we were told this just before we arrived so you have to provide your own toilet rolls, cleaning products, cloths etc which we have never had to do anywhere before. We choose self catering and have stayed in many different places around the world including Central America and this is the most basic we have ever experienced. It is not value for money and would not be classed as luxury. The kitchen utensils were cheap and the most basic you could have, One of the toilets was extremely dirty and we had a basket of dirty towels from whoever was in last which were still there when we left. We took photographs of the place and the people we have shown them to were shocked which is why we are putting this completely true review up as we would never have stayed here had it been advertised properly.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that the accommodation did not meet Julie's expectations as it was her holiday and I understand that. This is the first time in seven years with over a hundred rentals that such a disappointment has occurred (as can be seen from other reviews). Julie appeared to expect a free-standing villa when what was advertised and shown in the photos was a condo villa (as it is classified in Phuket and also reflected in the rental pricing). The unit is usually considered the best positioned in the estate as it has an open grass area to watch the sunset and is located not too far from the pool. After her initial communication of her disappointment relative to what she had expected, I offered to refund Julie's money if she wished to stay in different accommodation which was readily available in the area at end-November but she did not take me up on the offer. Unfortunately, the dishwasher broke down - I instructed CBRE to buy and install a brand new one but did not happen right away. CBRE also spoke to the guests in the other units while I emailed the owners of such units (if they were rentals) about managing the noise levels of their guests. Thai construction uses brick and concrete walls and floors between the units which should keep noise from travelling but clearly something was amiss. The on-site CBRE property management services attending to contracted regularly applied pest control as well as to the cleaning of the condos and supply of toiletries, coffee, tea and other basic necessities for guests also undertook a full investigation to rectify any deficiencies. Julie's comments are welcomed for as we are not living in Phuket we appreciate guests who identify issues that CBRE has not picked up on in their normal cleaning so they can be fixed before a subsequent guest arrives. We go down periodically - my wife had been in Phuket in early November and I will now travel to use this holiday home next month to determine if there are any outstanding issues and rectify them. After all, as I am on holiday myself at the moment, I recognise the need for a restful break. Hopefully, Julie had a restful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year vacation and will enjoy many more positive experiences in the future.

Perfect place for a getaway

I stayed at Jenny and Gordon's place for 10 days with a couple of my friends on a 'girls retreat'. The apartment is spacious with lovely Thai touches and has everything you could possibly need to make it a home away from home - we couldn't believe our luck. We enjoyed Gordon's restaurant recommendations and every morning strolled, or jogged, into town to enjoy fantastic croissants and coffees at Bake cafe. We loved lounging around by the pool or at the beach across the road, but also managed to get out and explore Phuket which had a fantastic variety of things to do - sea kayaking, 5 star restaurants, spas, hidden beaches, etc. Gordon provided extremely useful welcome information, as well as thorough instructions for everything in the apartment.

Top class luxury poolside accommodation

We rented the poolside villa which was an excellent move for a family of six. The villa is very spacious, modern and tastefully decorated with lovely teak furniture and flooring. The kitchen is well equipped if you need to cook, but we used it mainly for breakfast and snacks. There is a full utility room with a washing machine, airer and iron and board. The details provided by Gordon and Jenny were very accurate, but you need to see it for yourself to appreciate how beautiful it is. Maid service was every other day and the bedding, towels and beach towels were changed on a regular basis. I met the maid one day and she was a delightful young lady who paid great attention to the presentation and cleanliness of the villa. The management company is situated on site and are open until 5pm each day. We were also given some mobile numbers in case of emergency out of hours.

The site was very quiet whilst we stayed (start of the rainy season) and we had the pool to ourselves. It was a short stroll down a grass bank and we had a gorgeous view of it from our villa. The average temperature was approx 30 deg and it mainly rained in the evenings so we were able to enjoy the weather during the day. I enjoyed the fact we had a dining terrace which had overhead fans - we used this area a lot. Also very comfortable lounge furniture was positioned on two of the terraces.

Gordon and Jenny provide excellent customer service, keeping in touch via email and nothing was too much trouble for them. I have already recommended this property to a friend and would highly recommend it to others.

Bang Tao beach is literally 5 minutes from the villa but we hired a car from Pure Car Rental. We did this on-line prior to our departure and I cannot fault them. They were excellent value for money. We were met at the airport and were driven to Chom Tawan in our car and another car carried our luggage for a fee of 600 Baht. Drop off at the airport was excellent and hassle free. We toured the complete island of Phuket and even went north of to Phang Nga. We also took boats to Phi Phi Island, James Bond Island and the Koh Yao islands - highly recommend.

Locally we used the following restaurants:

Pesto - an Italian/Thai restaurant. Good value and excellent top quality food.

Black Cat - French/Thai restaurant. Excellent value and friendly service. Cocktails are incredibly cheap!

Sunset - Thai restaurant. Most meals between £1 and £2. Local families eat here which is always a good sign.

A slice of heaven in Phuket

The Penthouse in the Sky is a destination in itself! We'd return to Phuket just to have the opportunity to stay there again. It's perfectly kitted out and it is uber comfortable - everything at your fingertips, beautifully designed. The pool is a real highlight - it's shaded so you can spend all day in it. There's a shallow end for kids, and it's long enough to swim proper lengths too. The property is set in an immaculate location - a few minutes walk to Bangtao beach and to some wonderful dining spots - Tony's was a highlight.

Staying at the Penthouse in the Sky is a real treat! I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a truly relaxed and wonderful holiday!

Wunderschoener tropischer Garten sehr gepflegt,

Wir haben 12 Tage in der Anlage verbracht, ein kleines Paradies ueberall eine Blumenvielfalt mit tropische Voegeln. Die Wohnung ist sehr gepflegt gross und gemuetlich, Grodon hat alles perfekt organisiert mit vielen Tips und Ratschlaegen. Etwas wo mann auch gerne ein zweies Mal Urlaub machen wuerde.

Outstanding luxury penthouse in perfect location.

We had the most marvellous stay in Gordon and Jenny's fabulous apartment. This penthouse is true high end luxury located in the best position in the probably the best located complex in phuket. The penthouse is beautifully furnished with artwork and sculptures and polished teak flooring. The pool in the penthouse is crystal clear as is the wonderful shared pool. No trouble bagging a sunlounger as we rarely had to share the 25 metre pool with anyone else. We swam in starlight most evenings. The position of the penthouse backing onto gently swaying trees is peaceful and the most private of the complex. It was very safe and secure with friendly security on the gate.The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen better equipped than home. Birthday cake making no problem which thrilled my 8 year old.Gordon and Jenny provided lots of invaluable information on how to get the best from the area. We were able to stroll out to the completely unspoilt beach in 5 minutes and enjoy many foot in the sand thai restaurants for a few pounds. I had 5 massages during our 2 week stay. Chom Tawan is perfectly placed being minutes from fabulous restaurants, western supermarkets and beaches and a world away from the noisy seedy resorts found further south. When we first arrived at the penthouse it almost seemed too swanky vast and gorgeous for a family holiday. I needn't have worried. We settled in just fine. Only problem is we have been spoilt for all our holidays yet to come!

Venturing further you can scuba dive, sail the Andaman Sea/Phang Nga Bay, kayak caverns, white water raft, elephant ride, shop at Phuket Central Festival, be entertained by the Phuket Fantasea carnival/show, marvel at the Stunt Man Show, or dine at the endless restaurants on the island. If you return to your well appointed accommodation early, you may watch the nearby fireworks

Other Activities: Resort Spa or Thai beach massages. Indulge in fresh lobster and a pina colada at a beach restaurant!

Golf: Right next door is the immaculate and well manicured 18 hole Laguna Phuket golf course (within the gates of Banyan Tree Resort) previously used for the Thai Golf Open. Non-members are welcome but recommended booking tee times a few days in advance as it is a popular course. See

About 20 minutes away is the Blue Canyon golf course with two 18 hole courses. There are three additional golf courses elsewhere on the island.
