About Headford

Headford, some 28 km north of Galway, is the popular angling centre for the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, some 6.5 km west of the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the Black River (noted also for its trout angling) which is the county boundary with Mayo.

Headford is also the centre of an area rich in archaeological monuments, ranging from prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, to a bewildering array of monastic sites.

Today, the modern cattle mart, although replacing the fairs and markets once held in the town's two squares, ensures the local popularity of this North Galway town.

Headford is twinned with the picturesque town of Le Faouët in Brittany, France.

Places of Interest

Ross Errilly Friary

Standing in serene solitude on the South bank of the Black River, just two miles West from the town of Headford in Co. Galway the Franciscan Friary of Ross is recognised by many historians both past and present as the best preserved monastic ruin of its period in Ireland. It was founded in 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh, who was a native of the Headford area and, as it happens, a member of the Franciscan order.

Killursa

Killursa is about 1.5 miles west of Headford on the Greenfields road. It is a ruined church set in an extensive graveyard. The ruin measures 70 feet by 24 feet, and it has a gothic pointed doorway, and a large mullioned gothic window, which indicates that the present structure was erected after the Norman invasion, 1169. A wall was built across this church, probably cutting off a section for the officiating clergyman, who had his habitat there. Killursa means the church of St. Fursa whose statue one sees as one enters the graveyard. It was here St. Fursa had the famous visions of the unseen world which grave authors assert inspired Dante to write his “Comedia Divina”.

About Eileen Bennett

This is the home where I was born. I left here with my mother after my father's death in 1957. We spent a number of years in the USA.

Upon retirement my mother and step-father returned to the cottage and spent many happy years there. I moved to England, where I currently live. Now there is nothing I love more than returning to relax and enjoy quality time with my little grandson in the home which holds so many happy childhood memories for me.

Why Eileen Bennett chose Ireland

This is a family home. It was built over 200 years ago by the hands my great, great grandfather in an era where there was no modern machinery. If you were to see it without plaster, no two stones are alike. It was originally thatched and had no running water or electricity. It was occupied by generations of good hard working people, who had very little but had hearts of gold! We have modernised it through the years and choose to rent it as a means to hold on to it as it holds a very precious position in our hearts.

What makes this cottage unique

There is complete peace and tranquility to be had here. The only noise to be heard is the birds singing on the trees. Peace, perfect peace!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We received a friendly welcome by the caretaker upon arrival. Two double bedrooms and a sofa bed in the livingroom provided plenty sleeping facilities. The cottage itself is not big. It is sitd in very quiet area. A bit remote, one must have car. There is the nice town of Headford nearby, with grocery stores, petrol station, reasonable restaus, pubs and ATMs. A friendly pony was grazing in the garden behind a fence next to us, and our two small girls loved feeding it with carrots from the supermarket. Suitabl. cottage for day trips to Galway & Connemara.

Nice cottage, has everything you need on a quiet location

  • 4 of 5

Good location to explore the area. We enjoyed this quiet plac. Friendly care taker. In Dutch we would say 'klein maar fijn' which translates as 'small but cosy'.

Quiet country cottage

  • 3 of 5

Clean and comfortable, very much off the beaten path - private and quiet. We enjoyed our stay here.

Owner's Response: Delighted you enjoyed your stay. However, when you say "off the beaten path", it depends on what you expect from your holiday! Cong is just 9 miles from the cottage. Here you will find Ashford Castle, The Royal Abbey, Statue of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, both stars from 'The Quite Man", which was filmed in a pub in Cong and this pub is still functional. There are walking tours here, Nature and Wildlife tours, Historical and Heritage tours. Plus Boat tours and horseback riding. Galway City is 20 miles away with it's large shopping area, popular Salthill beech and amusement area. Crouch Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, 42 miles away. This is a 764 metres mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo. Aillwee Caves in Co. Clare is 43 miles away. Cliffs of Moor, Co Clare is 55miles away. Connemara National Park, Mweelin, Letterfrack, Co. Galway, is 50 miles away. I have but listed a few, the list is inexhaustible. Evelyn, the caretaker is always available with more suggestions.

Pauvre location et très petit - Poor location and too small for a party over 2

  • 1 of 5

Old cottage and that is the only charming fact that you will have. Too small, you can not be more than 2 to be at ease. You can not take a proper shower in the too rustic cottage. You also have to get a switch ON at least an hour before using the hot water for the sink OR the shower but not both in the same time. No minimum comfort inthat cottage.

Eilleen is ok but nothing more than that.

We had to quit two days before the end of our stay cause it was untolerable to travel from this place to the Connemara or any interesting places within 2 hours.

When we sent our email to Eileen to let her know she never answer back nor offer any refund despite the facts that we were unsatisfied.

We do not reccomand itat all.

Owner's Response: Amazing! After renting for over eight years, I have had six guests stay on numerous ocassions and no one has ever complained about the place been too small. It is not a large accommodation, and I have never claimed it to be. It has two separate bedrooms and a futon that converts into a double bed in the living area, so therefore there are beds for six people. This is also demonstrated by photographs. I genuinely don’t understand how three people would struggle with this. As far as travel distance to Connemara is concerned, I don’t know what route this person took for it to take two hours. It’s a twenty minute drive to Cong, which is the start of the journey to Connemara. Please read other people’s comments regarding the location to places of interest for a more accurate description. This guest sent me a threatening email to which I did not respond. And I did not think that three people departing after half way through the booked period, just because they changed their mind, qualified for a refund. I would never entertain having them as guests again and would never recommend them. Incroyable!

Lovely small cottage

  • 4 of 5

The location was great with a friendly pub bar in close proximately (que ally's). The cottage was comfortable and had everything required. A bonus was the horse and the two goats in the field right beside the cottage. My only suggestion is to reduce the furniture in the living area a couch is nice but with the two living chairs became overcrowded.

older cozy cottage surrounded by nature

  • 4 of 5

Thought the cottage doesn't have an exact address searchable by GPS (seems to be rather common situation in Ireland - we were staying in 4 different cottages/apartments and none was GPS-locatable by the address), it was rather easy to find following the owner's instructions. One unexpected issue was that the colour of the sign changed since google image, so we missed the right turn at the first time. The cottage was rather old, but fine, however rather small. It can sleep 6 people (3 beds including 1 roll-out), but not very comfortably. We only stayed for two nights though and we had pretty much everything we needed at the cottage. The small grocery store at the gas station had a reasonable selection of basic items. We tried to go to the local pub, but it was overcrowded with people watching some local game on TV, so we needed to drive to a nearby town for dinner. Certain property highlight was a horse grazing grass next to the cottage. We enjoyed our stay in general, the location was great for a nature getaway from the city.

Warm welcome

  • 5 of 5

Eileen's cottage is perfectly maintained and comfortable. Ours was a short stay booked at short notice: both Eileen and Evelyn went out of their way to communicate clearly and make us welcome. Although the location is quiet and rural, supplies and places of interest are readily accessible. Evelyn gave us very good suggestions for our onward journey. We would certainly return for further touring in western Ireland.
