Passareiro is a truly beautiful and much loved historic home with an authentic feel of times gone by.
Elegant and informal, this large whitewashed home extends over one level, with long vine-shaded terraces running along the length of the bedrooms and living areas. Antiques and rustic pieces are scattered throughout, adding to the rich sense of character and history of the house. There are lovely gardens and an outdoor dining area to totally relax in well as a spacious living room, dining room (both with giant fireplaces) games room and study inside.
Set two minutes from the house, the stunning pool is fed by a natural stream and is a great favourite with all our guests. It is the perfect place to totally unwind and enjoy the prefect views over vines and citrus groves. At night, eat out under the stars by lamplight and if you like, spot the constellations in the incredible night sky with our telescope.
GREAT LOCATION - Remote yet totally acessible
Passareiro is within easy reach of Lisbon (about 1hr), Sintra and the coast by motorway so you can easily get do a day trip and have the best of both worlds! You will need to rent a car to get around and explore the area, although most find their good intentions evaporate once they get near the pool!
There is plenty to do in the area. The Alentejo is extremely beautiful and you will be in the heart of its stunning landscapes and rural pace of life. Nearby is the famous town of Evora - a Unesco World Heritage jewel, with a splendid Roman temple and Roman remains which can be seen throughout the whitewashed cobbled streets. There is also a range of great restaurants and wineries in town as well as closer to home.
You will also be welcome to walk on the estate and soak in the beautiful scenery of ancient cork forests and vineyards. There are some great spots for picnics and if you are lucky you might spot eagles and other bird life. We are located within a Natura 2000 area for natural biodiversity and wildlife and actively participate in local conservation schemes.
EXCELLENT SERVICE - self catering at its best - and you can cheat if you want to!
Most of our guests book Passareiro on a self catering basis, but it's worth remembering that even as such, we offer a very high level of service. As described below, maid service is included in your stay but in fact you can have as much service as you like.
Sandra our housekeeper will be there every (bar Sundays) to do a general tidy up throughout the house and pool, replenish the wood (or coal for the bbq in summer) and make your bed made for you. She can also be booked for extra hours to help in the kitchen to prepare meals or babysit if you want to go out. We find this option takes the pain out of catering for large groups without adding too much to the cost.
For those who really don't want to lift a finger, we work with a great private chef who can be booked for you during your stay, or to arrange a special meal. He can also give informal cooking classes in the kitchen for those who are interested.
Simple home cooked meals on arrival are also available, arranged in advance.
This is a photo of our family (well almost all of us!) watching the cork strip in late July this year. The Alentejo's beautiful oak forests produce most of the world's cork and stripping is a fascinating process, done entirely by hand by local workers using skills that haven't changed for hundreds of years. We love walking out into the forest and watching them work. It's just one of the things that makes Passareiro special for us as a family, aside from the main house and the world's most relaxing pool, we love the space one has to roam and the sense that here, time stands still.
Joanna Mollet purchased this chateau / country house in 1905
Passareiro has been in our family for 5 generations and so there's a rich sense of tradition about the place. It's been a favourite spot for our family to get together and enjoy the company of friends in a totally relaxed atmosphere for over 100 years.
Our aim is to provide top notch accommodation with total privacy and a great level of service. Our house is beautiful in an understated, simple way and extremely comfortable. There's plenty of space to stretch out here, take a book to a quiet corner of the garden, explore the vineyards or soak up the last golden rays at the pool.
We want guests to relax and enjoy Passareiro for what it is and not have to worry about cooking and cleaning, it's a holiday after all! Although most people do like to cook for themselves, we've designed our service to be flexible to your wishes and budget. You can have as much or as little help as you like and we are happy to discuss what works best for you.
Passareiro is so much more than a gorgeous house, it's the feeling that once you arrive, you seem to leave the world behind you.
We had a wonderful and relaxing stay at Passareiro! We were a group of 3 families. There was plenty of room and accommodations were comfortable and spacious. The house is well-maintained by the wonderful housekeeper, who was also our babysitter. We greatly appreciated the extra services she provided aside from babysitting, such as the home-cooked meal (delicious!) the day of our arrival, and the grocery shopping, so we would have breakfast the morning after the day of arrival.
The weather was quite hot while we were there, but the house stayed cool during the day. It had all the amenities that we needed, and the pool was beautiful! So refreshing considering the high temps.
We were able to do day trips to Lisbon and to the beach with ease. Evora is very close-by, so there is good access to restaurants.
The owner was very responsive to our needs and she was always quick to respond to our questions and concerns. Our stay was perfect!
The house is wonderful, large, beautifully appointed, very well equipped and feels like home from the moment of arrival. Lots of space inside and out, very relaxing, nice pool and so on. Quite secluded and very quiet. The owner was very responsive and helpful by email before and during the stay. The house keeper was in every morning to clean, set up breakfast and water the plant pots. A chef service is available, which we didn't use as we didn't want to commit to particular evenings, menus etc before arrival. However as we were arriving Saturday evening the owner organised breakfast supplies for the Sunday morning as well as frango and chips ready for our arrival! Just ask and she will organise it. The house is an easy drive from Lisbon (about 1.5 hrs from the airport).
We enjoyed trips to Evora and various neolithic remains in the region. The caves on the way to Escoural were interesting although the actual drawings were quite indistinct and I've seen clearer examples in France. Anyway it's a quick trip and cheap so still worth doing if you are passing. We went on a tour of the cork forests organised by the owner's cousin who runs a nearby estate. That was a couple of hours on the back of an open truck with a guide who was very interesting, spoke excellent English and told us all about cork farming as well as taking us to see the estate vineyards. We really enjoyed that. We were lucky as the corking stripping was actually happening nearby so we got to see them in action. Very skilled and hard work in 40 degree heat. There are plenty of sightseeing and eating out options a short car journey away but the week we were there was very hot (which we like) so we spent a lot of time just relaxing in the house or grounds, and mainly dining on the terrace by the house.
It really is a perfect environment to get away from city life for a while.
Uma excelente estadia de três dias, num monte Alentejano muito bem cuidado, com instalações excelentes.
I didn't think it was possible for Passareiro to be more impressive in real life than it is in the photographs but it is. The bedrooms are all well appointed and gorgeous. The dining room is like something out of Downton Abbey and the outdoor eating area is just the perfect place to relax. Then there's the pool. What a hidden gem. We spent countless hours out there enjoying the wonderful Portuguese sunshine. On top of this fabulous house, the owner, Joana, is super organised and helpful. She was a great resource when I wanted to put together a wine tour of the region, helping me find and communicate with vineyards, organise transport and many other things. The staff onsite are also very friendly. At the last minute the maid, Sandra, looked after our dog so we could spend the day in Lisbon, they made sure the fridge was stocked with everything we needed and kept the place tidy. Overall a fabulous holiday was had at Passareiro.
This was our second trip., having visited last summer. Visited with family, 4 young children. Wonderful place to do very little! Evora is nearby, and good to visit for an evening or two.
The house is large and spacious and very well maintained. Sandra, the maid, is very helpful and efficient. We loved our time at Passarreiro and this was our third time. I would recommend the house to freinds.
I would not recommend the restaurant in Escourval - the food had clearly been frozen and thir was very little atmosphere.
Alentejo offers visitors a glimpse of life in one of Europe’s most unspoiled regions. From ancient cork forests to fortified medieval towns, stunning vineyards and great cuisine, there is lots to keep visitors busy. The attactions of Lisbon, Sintra and some of Europe's best beaches are all only just over an hour away, so easily reached for a day trip! At Passareiro, you can have the best of both worlds!
As a working farm, Passareiro also offers a chance to see traditional farm activities. In late May you can see the unique process of cork stripping and September is time for grape harvesting. Spring is lambing season and the fields come alive with wildflowers. Guests are welcome to walk on the estate.
Nearby is the World Heritage town of Evora with its Roman ruins, including the famous Temple of Diana. Evora is a charming university town with plenty of shops and restaurants.
The area also offers horse-riding, biking, nature walks and Go-Karting. Wine tastings can be arrang
