Overview

About the property

Self catering 3 bedroom bungalow, sleeps 6

This is a beautifully located bungalow situated on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. This spacious property consists of 3 double bedrooms, 2 large reception rooms, a kitchen, a modern fitted bathroom and an additional shower room. The master bedroom and front living room overlook the ocean and the rear of the property has open rural views stretching to the mountains and the nearby Rockfleet, or Carrickahowley, Castle. A few minutes’ walk along the sea front will take you to this 16th century castle, which was once the home of the Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley, or Granuaile. Also within easy walking distance along the sea front is Roigh Pier with a small harbour of local fishing boats. Fishing and sight-seeing trips can be arranged from here. The immediate area provides excellent walking opportunities, including the Furnace lakes, Shramore and Letterkeen forest and the Nephin mountain range. Both stylish and cosy, this bungalow is perfect for couples, families and groups.

Spacious house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Loved the house and location. Close to the water and pier and greenway so really convenient for cycling, pier jumping, kayaking and fishing.

Excellent base for touring Mayo

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this lovely home for a week in June. The location of the house is simply stunning - fabulous views of Granuile's castle and out over a small inlet of Westport Bay. The road is very peaceful and quiet and there are beautiful walks on your doorstep. The Greenway is easily accessible across the N59 and offers excellent opportunities for cycling or walking with amazing views provided at every turn. We toured all round Mayo and highlights were definitely climbing Croagh Patrick and walking up round North Mayo - Carrowteigue and the Belmullet peninsula, the Ceide fields, Downpatrick Head etc.. - beautiful.

The house is really well equipped and contains everything a small or large group would need. The layout of the house allows for different activities - the front room (overlooking the bay) is a great place to sit and read in peace and quiet and the 'den' is a brilliant place to sit and watch tv. The house has a huge self-contained garden (ideal for our little dog) which could easily accommodate a game of football! Newport is a lovely little town and we enjoyed treating ourselves to dinner in Newport House (Catherine is a treasure) and a few pints in Granuile's bar in town. Nevin's bar/restaurant also offers great pub-grub and more excellent service.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Newport and would love to visit again. Big Thanks to Rita, who very kindly forwarded on my electric toothbrush, which I'd foolishly left behind. This is a wonderful part of the world and offers so much to see and do, and the house offers the perfect base from which to explore Mayo

Lovely home with sea views

  • 5 of 5

We immediately fell in love with the incredible sea view from the front of the house. The ever changing mountain views from the rear were also stunning. The house was clean, spacious and well equipped and there was a large, safe garden. Perfect for children. I would

recommend lighting the open fire with traditional turf in the cosy kitchen diner if the weather is a bit chilly. One of the highlights was an evening of live Irish music at Nevin's Newfield Inn, a 10 minute drive away.

We would also recommend a wonderful seafood restaurant at Westport called An Port Mor.

This is a lovely retreat if you enjoy peace and quiet and wildlife. There were lots of interesting birds in the garden, also rabbits and there are lambs and calves in the fields behind.

Mr O'Boyle's representative nearby was on hand to deal with any queries.

All in all a holiday venue to remember.

Lovely setting, property disappointing

  • 1 of 5

The house is very poorly maintained. The kitchen is very old and falling apart. The couches in the snug/tv room is falling apart. The mattress in the main bedroom is uncomfortable, you can feel the springs through the mattress. The bathroom is ok and functional. The hot water runs out in seconds, so don't bother having a bath. The shower is so-so. For the amount paid, this property is a serious let down - DISAPPOINTING. The only thing going for it is the surrounding views. The photo's don't do the property justice.

Owner's Response: Well I'm disappointed this guest didn't find their stay positive but I must take issue with a couple of the points raised. The kitchen is not falling apart, it is very well equipped and all the appliances are fully functional. All guests are advised on the hot water system including the immersion heater which has two settings, the correct setting allows a plentiful supply of hot water. I, nor none of my previous guests, have ever had a problem with the mattress in the main bedroom either. I do however concur with the comments made re the sofa/chairs in the snug room, I plan to replace these. Ivor O'Boyle
