Just on the edge of Obertraun village (10 mins from Haussteinadler), the Krippenstein is steadily building its reputation as one of the top off-piste ski areas in Europe, attracting thrill seeking skiers and snowboarders alike! Not for the faint- hearted !!
There is a mass of things to do and places to see to suit all ages and interests. Ask for our summer guide or winter guide.
We loved our time at Haus Steinalder and in Obertraun. The bedrooms and bathrooms were wonderful and although the kitchen has not been updated it was both functional and comfortable - we spent a lot of time around the kitchen table. Having bikes was great too. My husband and I traveled with our young daughters and my mother and we were all comfortable and happy. The area has so much to offer - we could have added another week. We hope to come back some day!
Haus Steinadler is in a lovely area with lots to see and do. We had a great holiday here. The house is huge, with fab bedrooms and bathrooms, but the renovations didn't extend to the kitchen and living areas. The kitchen is dated and dining area is a kitchen table which seats about 6. The living area does not have enough chairs for more than 6, so not enough for the number of guests. We coped with bringing in some garden chairs. It didn't really matter, but was expecting better. As we were here for 2 weeks we expected a change of bedlinen, but couldn't find any so had to wash the sheets etc ourselves. With a few improvements this could be so much nicer.
Obertraun is situated in the heart of the Austrian Lake District, in a UNESCO world heritage site recognised for it's outstanding natural beauty, one of only seven in Austria. It sits on the southern shore of Lake Hallstatt, at the foot of the Krippenstein mountain and can truly offer something for everyone! If you are looking for outdoor activities, they are in abundance both in the summer and winter. From cycling to skiing, from rafting to rambling, one is never short of things to do (we can even help arrange specific activities with qualified instructors if you so wish). For those who prefer a more relaxing time, a gentle boat trip or a peaceful walk along the lake shore are always enjoyable as are visits to the spectacular Eishohle or Mammuthhohle caves and the local salt mines (steeped in history). There are tremendous views from the cafes up the funicular and the cable car. You could also simply allow yourself to enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings from the comfort of the spacious balcony or garden.
There are some beautiful towns nearby to visit too, such as Bad Ischl where the Emperor used to go on holiday, Bad Aussee, St Wolfgang, Altaussee, Salzburg and of course Hallstatt. You could go to the falconry dispaly at Werfen Castle, do archery in the fortress at Salzburg, go to a concert in the many places in Salzburg or even in the ice caves!
Summer Activities: Hiking, swimming, canyoning, caving, bowling, canoeing, boating, steamer trips, mountain railway, children's zoo, horse riding, go karting, white water rafting, birdwatching, paragliding, road cycling, mountain biking.
Golf: There are two courses nearby. One is just outside Bad Aussee on the way to the Sommerbergersee. It has the spectacular backdrop of the Loser mountain, and stunning views down the nearby valleys. The other is just north of Bad Ischl, set in a lush valley close to the Wolfgangsee. Both brilliant courses to play on in a unique and beautiful setting.

Ski: There are a number of skiing and snowboarding possibilities locally, with a total of 336km of runs in the region of all types. Krippenstein is the closest (3 mins by car or taxi, or free bus). The most well known route is the 11 km red route, one of the longest in Europe. You can stop and have a drink or lunch at Krippenbrunn. You can also go off piste in one of the largest freeride areas in Europe.
Intermediate skiers and beginners would be better off going to Dachstein West in Gosau (15 mins by car, taxi or free bus) or Russbach (20 mins). This area has 140 km of varied routes and types of skiing for beginners to advanced, with lots of cable cars and lifts, and a wide variety of places to eat. Ski schools are at Gosau and Russbach.
Loser (20 mins by car) is a great family resort with lots of variety. There are also possibilities for cross country skiing, ski touring, snow shoeing, floodlit tobogganning, ice skating, mushing, snow tubing, snow kiting, ski jumping, nude skiing. Ask for our winter guide.
