About the property

Spacious and Charming Historic Property Surrounded by Nature

Here's your chance to sleep in school! The Teacherage at Alango is nestled above 16,000 square feet of culture (Alango School, listed in the National Register of Historic Places), situated upon ten private acres, surrounded by hundreds of square miles of wilderness, yet just a short drive to town. Our 1200 square foot home-away-from-home is a traditional teacherage from days gone by that has been renovated to include all the necessities of today's comforts. There are two very large bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a queen bed. Each bedroom also has a day-bed and the rooms are theme- decorated down to the smallest detail. There is a pull-out (double) couch in the living room. The bathroom has been renovated into a charming, retreat and includes an antique clawfoot tub. The kitchen includes a refrigerator and freezer, gas range with full-size oven, microwave oven, toaster oven, pizza oven, and other small appliances. The dining room is spacious and has a beautiful westward view. The living room includes comfortable seating to watch the flat screen plasma TV (with satellite service) and there is a game table and writing desk. A washer and dryer add to your convenience. Wireless internet is available but not guaranteed due to the rural location. The Teacherage at Alango is located on the second floor of the school, has its own private entrance and tours of the school and its history are available upon request. Large windows offer beautiful views of the front yard and the woods surrounding the property. Because of our location on the second floor, unfortunately we are not handicap accessible. No smoking or candles are allowed inside our historic property. Maximum 6 adults. Open May through October.

About Roni Marie Maki

Hi, I'm Dan Maki and I'm proud to offer my home-away-from-home with you and your family. I have always had an interest in old buildings and this building has become a labor of love for me and my family. We look forward to sharing our passion for restoration with you!

Roni Marie Maki purchased this estate in 2004

Why Roni Marie Maki chose Angora

Two very important people in my life, my parents, graduated from Alango School in 1957. It was always a beautiful building to me and when we vacationed up here as kids, we would always drive by and know it was where Mom and Dad went to school. It was when I brought my own son up for a fishing trip about eight years ago to show him the school when I realized that it had fallen into disrepair and neglect. It had not been a school for many years and various owners had used it for several purposes. Long story short, I bought it. With the help of my family, friends and the community, we have brought Alango School back to life and are proud to now share the upper level as a vacation rental. (The teacherage is historically where the female teachers boarded because they were not allowed to marry.)

What makes this estate unique

They just don't make buildings like this anymore! Beautiful woodwork and details abound throughout. There's the dent in the gym floor where my father and a classmate accidentally dropped a piano off the stage. The pine floors have been refinished to their original shine and if these walls could talk, oh, what a story they would tell! To know that my parents went to school here and are now living in the original one room school-house behind the property, well, I guess you could say, they've come full circle. Saving this beautiful building, its stories and its history and sharing it with others is my greatest passion.

A Relaxing, Comfortable Stay

  • 5 of 5

The Teacherage at Alango provides a marvelous base camp from which to explore the Iron Range, BWCA, Superior National Forest, George Washington State Forest, and other area attractions. The Teacherage has been lovingly restored, with room for multiple friends and/or family. The kitchen is perfectly acceptable for vacation cooking, and groceries can be had a few miles north in Cook or a little further away in Virginia. The windows across the front let in ample sun, while the interior remains comfortably cool. Satellite TV and a DVD player provide evening entertainment at home, for those less inclined to read or play games (a healthy variety available on site). And the price is right! This was a very pleasant surprise for me; I'll be back!

The Teacherage is amazing

  • 5 of 5

The Teacherage is spacious, beautiful and relevant. We completely enjoyed our stay. We could feel the history of the space and the Maki's have done an incredible job in their restoration efforts of this part of their history. It is a great space for a couple, a family or a group of friends who appreciate privacy in addition to the clean and comfortable shared living areas and kitchen. A must experience. This region is full of fun and interesting things to do and the beauty of this northern most MN land is a treat for old or young.

trip back in time

  • 5 of 5

What a treat to stay at the school where my husbands father graduated in 1938. It was fun to stay in comfortable home away from home with personality and old fashion charm as well modern amenities like WIFI and cable. Much better than a run of the mill hotel. We were greeted by Ronnie and given a tour of the school . While there are still many projects to be done there you could tell how important it was to her an her family to restore this wonderful landmark. The unit was more than enough for my husband and myself and we were pleasantly surprised to find bottled water, spices and a bottle of wine to enjoy.

It is an older building and if someone is sensitive to smells it might be a problem but it was not an issue for us. We took a walk down the road every evening and saw more deer than you can count on your hands.

There is not a grocery store near by so I would suggest you stop in Virginia to get what you need. Bath soap and shampoo as well as kitchen essentials were supplied.

We would definitely stay here again and have recommended it to others.

Peaceful, spacious, clean, and dogs allowed!

  • 5 of 5

The title tells it all. The owner is on-site and offers tours of the historic building. It's worth an hour of your time for the tour. There is plenty of room for your dog to run around and this rental is far more reasonably priced than others that allow pets. You are about an hour from Ely, which is a major center of activity. I'd recommend the property based on the friendly owner, the cleanliness, the historic nature of the building, and the quiet location. I also suggest watching "the Shining" while you're there.
