About this property

Mountain Sanctuary with incredible views

Sitting below New Mexico's two highest peaks, Kachina and Wheeler, this private cabin offers the ultimate in eclectic stylish mountain experience.

The home has 5 bedrooms, totaling 4 king beds, 1 queen bed and 2 twin bunk beds over one of the 4 King beds. One bathroom offers a steam shower, and there is a wood-burning stove in the living area.

At the very top of Taos Ski Valley, the Wilderness Lodge at Kachina Peak is the highest private residence and accommodation in the state sitting at 10,200 feet. Designed by acclaimed hotel designer Alexandra Champalimaud, Wilderness Lodge is decorated with an eclectic and stylish array of furnishings from Europe and Africa. Inspired by the look and feel of the old mining cabins which once dotted this wild western landscape, the rustic exterior is made from 150 year old reclaimed timbers and siding sourced from a shed once owned by the Winchester Rifle Company in Massachusetts.

Note: A vehicle with four-wheel drive and snow tires or chains is MANDATORY to get to Wilderness Lodge in the winter as it is located at 10,200 ft above sea level at the top of a VERY steep driveway in a high alpine environment. Please be advised that this home does not have air conditioning. We loved the place but would have appreciated understanding the layout and knowing that it really is a hike from the lift. Also, the stove was out--could have learned about that when you all knew. Just would have been nice and helpful to be in the loop. Also, there needs to be more light in the main room. Hard to read and play games at night. We moves lights from the bedrooms but would have liked even more.

Beautiful property, unexpected water issues, inadequate corporate response
Good things: 1. Beautiful and peaceful setting and property 2. Attentive and proactive property manager 3. Exceptionally well-stocked kitchen 4. Great access to the Willams Lake Trail, The Bavarian, Ski Lift Bad things: 1. Large COVID cleaning fee ($850). The property was clean and what I would expect under normal circumstances, but it was clear that enhanced cleaning was lacking. E.g., a shower door had a finger drawing on the glass door, showing it had not been wiped. I was expecting more given the high fee. 2. Broken oven in main kitchen (the one in the other kitchen worked). I was alerted about this a few days prior, but not having a fully functioning main kitchen was inconvenient given that we cooked for the duration for a large group. Likely due to supply chain issues at the time, but not as advertised on booking. 3. We lost water for several hours in the afternoon on two consecutive days of our stay. The property manager was responsive via text and it was resolved both days by evening, but was disruptive, as we had planned to cook big meals, had kids in the party, and started looking for alternate hotel arrangements. We had been hiking and on both afternoons someone was soaped up in the shower when the water went out. The water was eventually restored, and we were able to stay in the property, but not as advertised. 4. Utility workers dug a large trench blocking the drive up to the property for the water project. We had people from our party blocked on both sides of this trench. After we talked with the utility, they accommodated us by creating a temporary road, but it took a lot of time and the road was not compacted and therefore affected by rain. I find it strange that this wasn’t planned or considered ahead of time, and that we had to take action to resolve this issue. 5. No prior notice of water or road outages. These were the action of the county, not Natural Retreats, but this result was not what we paid for. 6. Natural Retreats refunded 5.9% of my total bill without asking for the inconvenience, which was appreciated. However, given the above, I requested a 25% refund (1 night of our 4-night stay). I was blown off twice by Natural Retreats Management. It is for this reason that I will not do business with them in the future. Even with the above concerns, I likely would have returned to stay at this beautiful property if they responded with some consideration, even if a 25% refund wasn't possible.

Gorgeous large house. 4 wheel drive is a must. Close to ski lift, but not true ski in/out
House is beautiful, spacious, stylish. Bit of an odd layout, set up almost like a duplex, but easily handled our party of 11. Be aware, house is at 10,500ft elevation, and drive to it is steep. Do not attempt without 4 wheel drive. Even with it, we got stuck in snow twice during a storm. Ski lift 4 is about 200 yards downhill from house, easy to ski to but a tough walk back, better to park at lift. Lastly, town water supply failed, then leading to pipes freezing and no running water. Kim was great at relocating and reimbursing us but cut our time in house short. Seemed to be an isolated incident but maybe check into it before booking. May be an issue due to elevation- house is highest residence in state of NM. If coming from sea level, oxygen can help. Overall a spectacular place, with some wrinkles.
