About the property

A Private Woods, Close to Town, Full kitchen with fresh garden herbs, spacious !

Perfect for the short term traveler. Please read our reviews before you look elsewhere, to see how our guests feel. Our place is more than just the apartment, it is the location, and the beautiful surroundings in the grounds around it. Flower gardens, a lawn with ornamental stubs and trees, a small deck and grill, woods all around the perimeter for privacy, a walking or running trail right from the back of the property, a small greenhouse to sit in for a peaceful cup of tea. This beautiful 780 sq.ft. one bedroom apartment has all new furnishings and is comparable to a private hotel suite, but better. There are many EXTRAS that are included such as wi-fi and cable TV, laundry, fully equipped kitchen, fresh garden herbs for your use, an outside grill, that if you figure that into your cost elsewhere, it is actually less expensive to stay here. (More extras which are not listed here) Private separate entrance on the ground floor. One bedroom with queen sized bed, all new bedding & new premium mattress. Also another smaller room with a twin sized bed, in addition two very comfortable airbeds if needed. Apartment can accomodate up to 4 people,. Free wi-fi Internet, flat panel TV with free cable, office/den in apartment with FAX/copier. Full bathroom includes washer & dryer, hair dryer, shampoo & conditioner. Fully equipped kitchen with all dishes, pots & pans, cooking utensils, basic spices, etc. Morning coffee and tea is provided. There is an outside grill on a small deck near the greenhouse for your use. There is a walking or running or biking trail, right from the back of the property onto the trail. Our place is conveniently located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, (3 miles), and 8 minutes from the airport, 8 minutes from shopping. The rental is the entire ground floor, of almost 800 sq ft, we live up above in the upper two floors so that we are available to make sure all your needs are met.

The view from the window is a mix of spruce, birch and aspen trees. Flower gardens, including iris and lilacs, and an herb garden and greenhouse are on the property. In the Summer, we are close to the botanical garden at UAF, and in the Winter, if the auroras are out, they are very likely to be seen right over our house, with no city light pollution to dilute them. For extended stay, we can talk about a Monthly rate. Generally for anything over a month, we need to get references from your current landlord or other references. Have a great journey!

About Carol or Les Smallwood

Les & Carol Smallwood, have been residents in Fairbanks, Alaska, for over 27 years. This home you'd be staying at has been built by Les. The year purchased just indicates the year we purchased the piece of land it sits on. Located among aspen and spruce trees, the apartment suite is on the lower lever and was just remodeled. We have two dogs (all friendly and will not bother you), we love our location and privacy and hope you'll consider staying with us. We look forward to making your stay memorable.

Carol or Les Smallwood purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Carol or Les Smallwood chose Alaska

This piece of property is a total of 2.5 acres that was purchased by Les Smallwood in 1991, and then he began the process of clearing the woods and building the house you see today on it. We picked this part of town because it is near the University, doesn't have a lot of commercial business cluttering and hiding the natural beauty of the area, it is private and quiet, and it is still very close and convenient to everything in town. It is also located within the best schools' districts in the city, ensuring that our kids would go to the best public schools available.

What makes this apartment unique

Living with woods all around means privacy, and that you may get visits from the local moose. The air is fresh, and the water tastes good right out of the faucet, no filtering needed. If you are here in the Summer, the days are long and beautiful. In the Winter, the auroras are clear and strong, without any city light pollution.

We were overwhelmingly impressed with this beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

Just as the property itself was amazing, so were our hosts Carol and Les. They have made our first experience with VRBO a very positive one. The place was clean and all amenities were great. It is evident that much care has gone into making people comfortable for their stay in the apartment. The love that Carol puts into tending the garden every morning is inspiring. Also, the information that was included in the welcome packet was super helpful in planning our activities in and around Fairbanks since we were first time visitors there. I would recommend this place and these hosts hands down!! Thank you to Carol and Les for the great experience! It really was one of our best vacations ever.

Owner's Response: Sean & Sharon, Thank you so much for the excellent review you wrote! We so enjoyed having you as our guests, as you were very considerate in your treatment of the property, and how clean you left it! And of course, you are both wonderful people, and the time we were able to spend with you here was lots of fun for us, too! We hope you will consider staying with us again in the future, if you ever plan another trip up here, you're welcome anytime! Maybe to see the auroras in the Fall (September or October)or in the end of February, or March when it gets a lot sunnier, but is still Winter. That's when there are dog sled races to see, ice carvings to view (during March) and the auroras are still very active. Thanks again, Carol & Les

Tucked away and perfect

I'll reiterate what others have said. First, the rental itself was in beautiful condition--nicely updated, tastefully decorated, and spacious. The home is on a large plot of land surrounded by woods, and there are no visible neighbors. Les and Carol: delightful, hospitable, and a treasure trove of information. Very warm and friendly without being intrusive. One point: Do remember you're on the bottom floor, so expect to hear footsteps of humans and furry friends above you. It really wasn't disruptive or loud, but if you're a very light sleeper you may want to swing by the 24 hour Fred Meyer and pick up a cheap fan for background noise. But this is just a minor point, as none of us were actually awoken by any noise. You'll definitely enjoy your stay here! Thanks so much for having us. :)

Owner's Response: Thanks for the very nice review! We enjoyed meeting you, and we're glad you were so comfortable. Especially since we accommodated an extra guest, at the last minute. If you communicate to us ahead, and during your stay, your very light sleeping habits, and later sleeping hours, we could have told you that there's a sound machine you could have used, and the pets would have been in the garage, a simple fix. All you have to do is ask, communicate any concerns. Thanks for staying with us, you are welcome to stay again, and we are glad you loved our location and our place!

Second stay and just as wonderful as first time.

  • 5 of 5

I had submitted a review and will submit another one. The location of the property is an easy wide road about 10 minutes from the airport. The roads are plowed regularly and Les keeps the road clear and has a plug for your rental car to keep it from freezing at night. The northern lights come overhead or just at the end of the road to the north. Every pamphlet that is in Fairbanks, Carol has put in the rental. The rental has a printer for your boarding passes, unheard of at other rentals, large screen tv with easy instructions, huge washer and dryer, upscale cooking equipment. Les and Carol are nature lovers and provide for the wild animals you can see right out the kitchen window. Carol or les are only a Text away. There is a wonderful trail out past the greenhouse that takes you on a wonderful walk with clear signs back. Downtown is only a few minutes drive and easy to locate shopping. There is a bar-b-que at your disposal. They can offer you suggestions and every thing they suggested was informative and interesting. I felt secure and safe when I visited with just my girlfriend and then when I came to enjoy the apartment again this year with my husband it was spotless. The new mattress, bedding, loads of towels and even extra jackets for the cold...WHO does that? The Smallwoods are personable and professional and are committed to you enjoying your stay. I travel all over the world and stay in many VRBO's and have never experienced such "customer service" as with this pair. I am going to get my flight in order and stay next year also. You will be pleased with this location and the high standards they provide. I hope my first review had made it through but I do not mind you contacting me if you would like: Lerickson299 and then it would be the little @ you would then add Hotmail and then a period (.) ending with a com.

Owner's Response: Linda, Thanks again for your super wonderful and detailed review! Just let us know when you would like your dates to be, and I will put your reservation on the calendar. It would be great to host you and your family or friends again! March is a great time because of the dog sledding, World Ice Art, and aurora activity. But another time to consider is Fall, we have had lots of aurora activity in late September, and October, and it is not as cold yet then, Although there may not be as many tourist activities at that time, you can always wine and dine, and if the dates coincide with the first Friday of the month, you could go on the art tour of galleries, it is an event we call "First Friday" and happens throughout the year. Just an idea. Enjoy your Spring and Summer! Carol & Les

second timer renting this apartment and still the best deal in fairbanks. so close to everything

  • 5 of 5

I stayed 5 days in 2016 and before I left, I begged to be put on the books for 2017. I travel about 3 months during the year as I am retired. I can go anywhere I want, financially and always look for 4 star minimum. This is premium location, easy drive from airport, road private and plowed for easy access. Apartment has leather furniture and thick luxurious comforters and New mattress. windows look out on bird feeders, greenhouse, and lovely trail you can walk morning and night. The trail is well marked, safe, quiet and plowed by community living there. Lots of thick towels and shampoo/conditioner/soaps/laundry soap/dish soap supplied. Cooking pans are thick stainless steel, Washing/dryer provided along with computer set up and a Printer to print your boarding passes...unheard of at any other rental I have been to. Carol makes it a point not to intrude but if you ask, since she is an artist, she can direct you to the best places for good quality local art work. Every suggestion we took from her was well thought out and superb. Maps and brochures are provided and the apartment is so conveniently located, you can even come back for lunch and then take off again. You can use the bar-b-que on the same deck as the greenhouse.

There are plug ins for your car and the open kitchen/livingroom offers great view of brand new HUGE tv with clear directions on how to navigate the controls. The internet is such a great connection and Les is a computer tech. He came downstairs and figured out our computer to his connections. This couple is dedicated to running this apartment efficiently and hopefully is building another apartment so I can bring more people. The extra computer room has a twin bed and there is an additional mattress so you could actually have 5 comfortably. The apartment is all new so it is spotless and has heated baseboards so quiet at night. Lots of hot water available and huge frig and fully equipped kitchen with high quality pots and pans so that you can keep it all very clean. There is extra of everything, sheets, towels, paper towels. Go to apartment first, then go shopping because you will find loads of spices (she takes care to clean out expired food stuffs left by others) but the apartment is rented quite often so we all leave interesting food treats and Carol makes sure it is all up to date. She has taken the time to put into the apartment what 4 star hotels do and makes it so luxurious.

this is a fantastic value

Owner's Response: Wow, Linda, that was a beautiful review and we appreciate it very much! Thank you so much for choosing us again, and this time we met your husband. Both of you and your friends are welcome anytime, I'll let you know when the larger apartment is ready, and just let me know what dates you want and we'll pencil you in. So glad you were able to see the auroras this time! Thanks, you are great guests! Carol & Les

We are located near the University of Alaska Fairbanks, on the west side of town, only 8 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from shopping, yet still secluded, private wooded setting. In the Summer, we are very close to the botanical garden, and the UAF Large Animal Research station with musk ox and caribou, (reindeer). In the Winter, the auroras can be seen going right over our house!
