About this property

The Cabin on San Juan STR21-012

Live Colorado the way it was meant to be! Built in the 1920s, the first level of this spacious home retains the charm of cabin living at the time, with original log-and-chink walls, wood-beamed ceilings, two hand-built stone fireplaces and a clawfoot tub.

Two decks are lulled by swaying cottonwoods, yet this property is convenient to all that makes Buena Vista a great place to live! An easy walk to downtown, this home is fun for sets of couples, extended families and groups.

With a large, unfenced yard, this home has a back deck perfect for socializing and grilling. Inside, 2,200 square feet of living space lets everyone in your group relax and enjoy. The property is on the west side of town in an older neighborhood where locals walk their pets and enjoy the quiet surroundings. The bedrooms are cozy and rustic, yet the kitchen is modern and bright.

Three bedrooms and 2.5 baths sleep up to eight, with two queens, one full and a pull-out couch. All beds, mattresses and linens are new.

One full bath has double sinks and a stand-up shower, while a second bath downstairs has a clawfoot tub and shower, as well as a stacked washer/dryer. The upstairs bedroom has a half-bath and guests staying there must go downstairs to shower. The upstairs bedroom is very large, with vaulted ceilings, a seating area, and French doors leading to a second-story porch that offers a nice view to the west.

Please note that like many homes in the mountains, this one does not have air conditioning. There are plenty of screened windows as well as three ceiling fans. We provide WiFi and cable TV.

This whole house and large yard is available for you to enjoy! Please note there is a small, one-bedroom cabin on the edge of the property that is also a vacation rental. None of the space is shared but please be sure to leave the tenant's parking space open.

Beautiful rustic cabin in town
The cabin is both historical and updated while retaining its charm. The kitchen was really well stocked and had everything that we needed for cooking meals during our long holiday weekend. The location is great, easy walking distance to the main part of town for restaurants and shopping. Really comfy beds and plenty of room to spread out and relax. We totally recommend this charming cabin!

Hello! I have lived in Colorado since my early 20s, with a short stint living and playing in Alaska. I love the outdoors and spend most of my free time on rivers and in the mountains close to my home in Buena Vista. I love to share this beautiful state with friends, and make new friends in the process! I am happy to answer questions you may have about your travels here ... please don't hesitate to ask. I travel frequently to climb and love long trips rafting and canyoneering in Utah. My bucket list is long and I would be pleased to help you cross items off yours. Happy travels!

Why they chose this property

This house was originally owned by Dr. James Green, one of the first rural doctors in Chaffee County, who traveled to area ranches to see patients, then opened an office in the house in what is now the dining room. He also opened the first clinic in Buena Vista on Oak Street.

A social man, Dr. Green called the place "Fort Flag," hence the sign on the front of the house, and frequently enjoyed time on the back deck with friends, according to a family member who still lives in town. Names of his friends who died in World War II are inscribed on the flag pole, where he used to fly a special flag.

The second story and kitchen were added in the 1990s. Dr. Green used the upstairs as an art studio. I live across town but purchased Fort Flag in 2014. I love the way the house feels and respect and honor its history. I imagine that when it was built, the cabin felt "rural," being a few blocks from historic downtown Buena Vista.

I especially admire the hand-built stone fireplaces, one of which contains petrified wood and sparky, unusual stones. The other is made of smooth river stones and I would love to know who picked these and placed them in each of their spots.

This house has a little history and a special feel. I am grateful to be able to share it with people who travel from all over to visit Buena Vista.

What makes this property unique

During the cooler months, it is fun to have a little fire in the old wood stove on the back deck. We provide plenty of wood and kindling so you can enjoy the night sky just that much longer.

Please note that there is a birds nest blocking the river-stone fireplace in the dining room. Until we can get a chimney sweep in to get rid of the uninvited guests, this fireplace cannot be used because the house will fill with smoke.
