About Anrik Engelhard

I am born&grown, educated in Amsterdam, but lived and worked for years in tropical areas as a doctor (clinical and public health). My wife Carla works for the Municipality of Amsterdam. We love to make long bicycle tours in Holland and abroad. We are active in a local group of climate activists for CO2 reduction among citizens.

Anrik Engelhard purchased this bed and breakfast in 2001

Why Anrik Engelhard chose Waterland

Carla became somehow 'claustrophic' in our previous 7 th floor apartment. To our surprise we ended up in Amsterdam North where nature is in the backyard....We were very lucky to find this place and never take it for granted.

What makes this bed and breakfast unique

After an exiting day in town get rid of the noise and dust. Park your car secure in front of the house at no cost. Even better, leave your car next day; take our (free!) bicycles. After 20 minutes you are in town after enjoying the view from the (free/7x24) ferry. Even taxi drivers often say: 'Wow, I didn't know we have places like this in Mokum' !! (local nick name of Amsterdam).

Notes:
The house is an co-built cottage, very well insulated (cool in summer!), central heating (floor), rainwater reuse system (toilet). Another room in the house is (though not very frequently) used as my working room(photography, music). By no way this will limit your privacy. No traffic noise day and night; village life, but still close to centre of town. Free parking saves you €30 per day at least.

Delightful hosts, cottage adorable, location was absolutely perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time at Anrik & Carla’s cottage. It was super clean, comfy and modern and included everything that anyone would need. Super comfortable beds and bedding. We shopped at the local market and cooked some simple meals, and packed lunches. We loved being so close to the city, but on the edge of the gorgeous countryside. I can’t say enough about having bikes for my whole family included in this rental! Anrik was so attentive in making sure that my children had bikes that fit them. We biked an easy 20 minutes to the ferry! (3 minute, free crossing!) Totally fun! And walked around the city. Another day we were had the best time biking the countryside villages in a loop that brought us back to the cottage. My 12 year old was in heaven! We’ll be back for sure! Best way to end our trip.

Our stay at the cottage was amazing, will certainly be back

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying here on our recent trip to Amsterdam. The cottage is very cozy and an amazingly functional use of space. Everything you can think of needing was provided and even a few things you wouldn't consider needing like a full spice rack in the kitchen or a library of books and maps of the surroundings were available.

The nearby market combined with the bikes lead to many fresh meals bought, transported by pedal and cooked in-house. The wildlife in the pond out front mesmerized my daughters and the river lock right down the street provided some very simple evening entertainment as we went to watch the ships large (dinner cruises) and small (personal sailboats) pass through.

Overall the experience was amazing and Anrik was a wonderful host. I highly recommend a visit to the cottage. In fact the only downside was that we couldn't stay longer.

Wonderful house and host!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four thoroughly enjoyed our 4-night stay here, which flew by much too quickly. The house was just lovely and so very comfortable, and Anrik was so welcoming, informative, and helpful!

Wonderful spot!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic spot right outside the city. Besides using the bikes to tour Amsterdam, we enjoyed biking around the small town. The grocery store nearby is excellent! Would stay here again, no question about it.

Beautiful and comfortable guest home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful cottage just outside Amsterdam. Convenient to get in to the city, but enough removed to enjoy the quieter side of the country. The cottage is well stocked and all of the bed linens are super comfy. Highly recommend.

The region around our house is typically Dutch: history of our struggle against the sea; where Rembrandt painted; historical and contemporary architecture; tour along the fishermans villages along the IJsselmeer (Volendam, Edam, Marken) Open air museum Zaanse Schans. And... van Gogh, Rijksmuseum, Eye (film cineam&museum), and just walk along the canals.... Amsterdam is great, though small: everything within easy reach!
