Hi my name is Sue MCgrath and I have been managing Blo Norton Hall since my boss Mr Lorimer purchased in 2009 where he refurbished and brought it to life. With such a beautiful property my job is very easy, we love to rent it out so you and your families can enjoy the house for the many different events you would like to hold with a large group of people.
Sue McGrath purchased this barn in 2009
Blo Norton Hall is not modern, does not have great Wi-FI, you cant get a phone signal, the furniture is antique and the floors uneven but what it lacks in Hotel sophistication it makes up for with character and it has bundles of it! I love it for its quirkiness and when children arrive their faces light up, for they see how great hide and seek is going to be. Its very special to me and I am sure it will become to you, some of our guests have been returning year after year, it grows on you.
The house is a coming together and a celebration of family events, you find yourselves talking because we do not have Hi tech equipment or X boxes, the phones don't work very well so you find communication becomes key, even the kids join in! We are not one of these places who hike up all the bank holiday rates, we have 3 rates and pass the discounts on to everyone, so you pay a low rate Jan - July, that's right no increase for Easter or May bank holidays, there's a summer rate and of course Christmas and New year. We believe that everyone should benefit especially those with young children. We hope you enjoy as much as I and my staff enjoy working and maintaining it.
Duleep Singh barn is comfortable and well-equipped (including a music system in the sitting room), and has nice views over open fields on one side. On the other side, the windows look out over the garden of the 2nd, larger barn (Virginia) so there can be some noise from it - as we discovered when a large family staying there played cricket on the lawn. However, this was nothing compared to the virtually continuous noise of the RAF jets flying over Blo Norton every morning (from nearby RAF bases). Sadly, this spoilt our enjoyment of sitting out in the garden. Additionally, on two of the six days we stayed, the RAF was conducting low flying manoeuvres directly overhead and the noise was intolerable! This is a pity as we enjoyed our stay in the barn the rest of the time. It has nice furniture and both the sitting room, kitchen and 2 bedrooms are all of a good size. One small thing, in our opinion the TV is a little too small for the size of sitting room and meant we had to huddle close to it to see anything.
The nearest beach is about a 1h drive away - and there is a lovely long sandy beach at Lowestoft which we would highly recommend. It's also about an hour's drive to get to the Norfolk Broads where you can hire a boat to take to the water.
Had it not been for the noise pollution from the RAF base, we would have given this a much higher rating as the property itself is lovely. It may be that we were just unlucky with the timing of our stay - and that the RAF jets are not so active other times of the year.
We had a wonderful weekend at Blo Norton Hall. Everything was perfect, the hall is full of character and lots of fun to explore. The grounds are beautiful and gave us the opportunity to enjoy the weather.
We had a murder mystery evening and the hall played the perfect host to this.
I would highly recommend a visit.
Stay was very good, except a bit of problem with few bedrooms being very cold. The place was in a very quite area and emergency supplies were about 10 mins drive.
Also shower were not great. Barn information was a bit misleading saying it sleeps 6 but really not enough beds. Facility for spare beds would be great for example folding beds/mattress etc.
I would recommend in having at least a couple of maps, like walking routes to get emergency supplies etc or nature walks/footpaths as we walked to Costcutter which was about 40 mins to get there and when we walked from the main road there was no path to walk down. A map would have helped.
All the other facility were fantastic. I have no complain and would recommend this place to all my friends and would visit again. Next time hopefully in summer☺️☺️
Duleep Singh Barn is a stylish conversion of a farm building, in a very quiet location with an attractive view across fields to the church. It's very warm and comfortable, and has been furnished with an eye for detail. The open-plan living space is large and well-lit, and the two bedrooms and two bathrooms are of a good size. The kitchen has the usual oddities associated with holiday properties - if you feel the urge to make melon balls or create fancy pats of butter you'll find the necessary gadgets, but there's no teapot or a mixing bowl and only one oven glove. The handbook of information is odd, too: it's a generic document intended to cover not just this property, but the other converted barn as well as the large manor house, and contains information that isn't relevant to Duleep Singh Barn while omitting information that would have been useful, such as where to find the central heating over-ride controls. But this is really nit-picking: we were very comfortable and enjoyed our stay.
The guests who stayed in the Barn really loved it ~ and were very happy there.
There was a slight mutter about it being too warm, but...
Thanks you again for a wonderful birthday holiday,
14 of us stayed in both barns for my 40th birthday and had such a great visit, the barns were beautiful, open, spacious and in fabulous condition, they were perfect for our celebrations. Sue and the housekeepers were very helpful and accommodating and the whole experience was easy from start to finish. We used Emma Biggs catering and Emma was fab and her food and very reasonable. None of us wanted to go home, I wouldn't hesitate to visit again.
The Village itself is surrounded by quiet lanes, ideal for walking, cycling and painting and is close to Redgrave and Lopham Fen. Blo Norton Hall is the perfect choice for a relaxed stay in the East Anglian Countryside.
Blo Norton is situated close to the picturesque Norfolk and Suffolk Borders making it ideal to explore all that both counties have to offer.
Blo Norton lies on the River Little Ouse which separates Suffolk from Norfolk.
The Hall reputedly provided the setting for Virginia Wolf’s short story The Journal of Miss Joan Martyn. In the story the main character, Rosamund Merridew, is a historian researching England's land-tenure system
