Charming red cottage with stone fireplace nestled on private 40 acre estate, 600 feet of Lake Erie waterfront, small boat launch, bullfrog pond, trickling stream, fruit trees, blueberries, walking trials at the end of half mile wooded driveway. Perfect for family reunions or vacation retreat located 22 miles West of Erie, PA and 8 miles East of Conneaut, OH.
This 4 bedroom home is available year round, but cross country skiing access maybe required for winter use. The property is bordered by Lake Erie to the North, Camp Lambec to the West and to the South and East are private undeveloped lands. Nearby, the largest tract of undeveloped land on the South Shore of Lake Erie, the Pennsylvania State Game lands/David M Roderick Wildlife Reserve; and the new Lake Erie Bluff's park is also nearby.
A historical property due to its location on the final 259th milepost of the pre-revolutionary war northern boundary of Pennsylvania. For history buffs, a granite monument near the highest bluff placed in 1910s marks the old state line and recounts the deed dating back to a treatise signed with the Indians and George Washington. The cottage built in the 1940s was expanded and renovated in 2000 to include a first floor master bedroom and private bath, a spacious maple cabinet kitchen, breakfast nook stocked with all equipment to prepare any meal. The living room has a stone, wood burning fireplace to make any night feel cozy. A lakefront dining room and settee, front and back decks both perfect places to relax, listen to the waves, see the boats go by and watch the hummingbirds dart around the feeder. If the weather turns, the enclosed front and back solarium settees allows you to take in the beauty.
The second floor has 2 bedrooms. Both with 2 twin beds and shared full bath.

Family second home used for gatherings, entertaining and recreation over the years but now not used as much since all children are grown and living out of the area. Offers still the gathering location for reunions and grandchildren entertainment.
David Lund Jr. purchased this house in 1975
It is a place that builds memories, and the owners want to continue that tradition for their grandchildren and generations to come. Sharing its unique beauty and tranquility with others that have a similar desire to have a place for reunions, recreation or just plain quiet time away from it all is what we hope to achieve.
Nothing like it exists, the cottage property is named '22 Chains' because it lies on the last milepost of the old Pennsylvania northern border and the land, that remains as the final segment connected to the Lake Erie waterfront, is the 22 chains. Had it not been for a land trade with New York after America's independence was won, the only waterfront for Pennsylvania would have started from this location and extend the short distance to Ohio to the West. That's the history behind it, but the real benefit is its pure beauty of waterscapes and landscapes. A superior place to decompress and enjoy family time.
Not enough could be said about this piece of paradise. Our family has great memories from past visits and look forward to our returning and making more.
This is our 2nd stay over the last 4 years. We love the solitude, scenery, and access to Erie.
Our nightly walk to the local ice cream stand has become a ritual. A stop at Peggy Gray's chocolate shop is required. A day at Waldameer Water World and Park is a tradition with the grandkids. Of course the sunsets are stunning. Wish we were closer.
The property was perfect for our family. The sound of the waves lulled us to sleep at night and woke us with the sun.
Every area of the property was used!! We spent hours on the beach, the surf was high in front of the house so we went 30 steps to the left where there was a charming path to our "secret beach". A few days the lake had small waves that the 11 year old kids loved, a few days the lake was completely still and crystal clear. We spent a long afternoon at Conneaut Park Beach, which has a very large sand beach, a children's play park, bathrooms and a great concession with tons of food options. A major portion of our time was spent in the front yard.....there is so much room for the kids to ride bikes, scooters, etc....we caught tiny toads that were constantly hopping by, named every one of them and then released them back to the wild :)....deer lingered under the many fruit trees toward the back of the property....we walked to a charming ice cream shop after dinner most nights...I don't think it was a mile away. There is a quaint candy / gift shop less than a half mile farther.
The house is large and welcoming, plenty of room for everyone to get together and plenty of spaces for alone time. We really feel that we couldn't have had a better experience........
We loved our stay at 22 Chains. The outdoors space allowed for visiting on the porch, on the lawn, by the water, by the pond, or even on the water (when the waves were calm). Though the beach area was small and you needed to navigate the step down off the cement wall, we were able to get 2 kayaks down to the water and enjoy fishing from the boat. Although, the small pond in the front yard was most successful for the boys and fishing. The water in the lake was just too choppy to catch anything close to shore. The home provided all that we needed for our cooking needs and visiting. One downside for us, was that the home provided 9 beds but we thought it said 'sleeps 10', so my husband was on the couch for the week. Secondly, I believe the home was closed up for a bit prior to our arrival since the water had a very strong sulfur odor. By our last day it eased up a bit, but it was a very strong smell. That said, the home itself lends itself nicely to relax and visit, which was our family's main objective. We were only a 25 minute drive into Presque Isle for fishing, kayaking, Sally's and Sarah's hot dogs, Maritime Museum and Tom Ridge Environmental Center. David Lund was quick to respond to any needs we had (such as the downed tree across the driveway upon our arrival). Within an hour we were successfully driving our cars down to the house.
very nice property ,however you will need drinking water ..
22 Chains was one of the most beautiful places we have stayed, and our family has traveled quite a bit. The house was comfortable for 7 adults and 4 little ones. The sunsets were just amazing. The amenities were just like being at home. Our two grandsons 6 and 4 had the best time of their lives. Lots of things to do from riding bikes, playing horse shoes, catching toads in the woods and taking nature walks. Very enjoyable. We played at the beach just about everyday. Nice to have your own private beach. Unfortunately we did not get to build a fire on the beach, the pit kept washing away. HA HA. But we enjoyed many evenings watching the sunset and playing by the water after hot days especially at the Conneaut Ohio D Day Re-enactment, of which our youngest son took part. Its a must see for everyone. Thanks to the Lund family for the exceptional week. PS. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Lund (Davids mother) She is truly lovely lady. Thanks again.
