Very private, elegant and full of character only begin to describe this hand-crafted and beautifully designed open-style home, located on a 20 acre private retreat. We were very fortunate to escape the recent fires, and our area is still green and not charred. This tri-level home has unparalled features utilizing redwood reclaimed from the dismantling of the 1896 Acadia Hotel. With the convenience of just a short drive from town, you enter a world of hills, graceful oak woodlands and the sounds of year-round Santa Rosa Creek. The spacious vaulted-ceiling living area and kitchen opens up to a 1000 square foot south-facing deck, shaded in summer, that provides additional dining or seating, and a hot tub, to enjoy spectacular full-range views of tree-lined hills, wildlife and sunsets. Whether relaxing on the deck, in the hot tub or in the Jacuzzi of the master bath suite with your favorite wine, enjoying a meal prepared in the gourmet kitchen, or listening to the classical and 60s-90s record collection, the ambiance and tranquility are without comparison.

The “Acadia House”, with its private 20 acres and wonderful remote feel, is conveniently located in Sonoma County only 3-5 miles on Highway 12 from the wineries in Kenwood, within a 30-40 min drive on scenic roads to the spas of Calistoga, the wineries, highly acclaimed restaurants and shops of Sonoma, Glen Ellen and Healdsburg, yet only 15 minutes from all the additional amenities (restaurants, movie theaters, shopping) of Santa Rosa, 45-60 minutes from the beautiful beaches of the Pacific coastline and an hour from Golden Gate Bridge, gateway to San Francisco.

Acadia House has three bedrooms, and three and a half baths with an additional queen memory foam sofa bed in the den to comfortably sleep 6-8; an additional double futon allows for up to 2 additional guests upon request. The master bedroom suite features a large Jacuzzi bath, surrounded by upper-level private and secluded decks that makes it feel like part of the outdoors. There are many hiking and biking opportunities with Mt Hood, Sugarloaf and Annadel State and Regional Parks within 5-10 miles.

This is not a house for wild parties, and although we prefer no pets, we consider well-behaved mature dogs on a case by case basis. For groups of 2, reduction in daily rate may be agreed dependent on availability. Housekeeping/cleaning fee to be paid by guests. For longer stays, weekly cleaning services are available.

The owners, Debby, a recently retired scientist and now also an aerialist and Mel, an independent documentary film maker, split their time between California and Salt Lake City and are happy to share the joy and tranquility of this retreat with others as a Vacation Rental.

About Deborah Eppstein

We (Mel and Debby) live in the foothills of Salt Lake City, enjoying outdoor life in the surrounding mountains. We have visited Sonoma County yearly in January, and loved it so much that we purchased this home and now split time between Salt Lake and Sonoma County. Debby is a scientist and entrepreneur in the biotechnology field, and her hobbies include performing the art of aerial dance and running triathlons. Mel is an independent documentary film maker and connoisseur of the fine arts, and an avid bicyclist. Both Mel and Deb enjoy traveling and experiencing both the wilderness and the cultures of city life.

Why Deborah Eppstein chose Santa Rosa

We fell in love with this property from the first time we saw it in spring of 2012. The house is incomparable- beautifully hand crafted by the prior owners from redwood, with a spacious and open design we love including vaulted ceilings throughout, with many windows and huge decks to bring the feel of the outdoors inside. The house is located on 20 acres of private, beautiful surrounding land, with graceful moss-lined oaks, a year round stream, and wonderful views. We had originally planned on purchasing property and designing and building our dream house, until we saw this property which was everything and then some of what we were looking for. We are so excited to own this house now!

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The house has a wonderful history- the prior owners hand crafted this home, utilizing redwood they salvaged from the 1896 Acadia Hotel (in Tracy, CA) that was dismantled shortly before they started building in the mid 70s (the house has been updated since then). This home has great privacy which we love, yet is only minutes from amenities of the city of Santa Rosa or the wineries and restaurants of Sonoma Valley and Northern Napa Valley, which both were important criteria for us. It is centrally located, providing easy access to the lovely towns of Calistoga, Healdsburg, Kenwood, Glen Ellen, and Sonoma, as well as all the conveniences of shopping in Santa Rosa. In addition, it is only 45-60 minutes from the Pacific Coast and an hour from the Golden Gate Bridge, gateway to San Francisco. It has access to 2 lovely state and regional parks (Hood Mountain Regional Park, Annadel State Park) within 3-5 miles for additional biking and hiking opportunities, and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park which also has an observatory, as well as Jack London Historic Park.

We are located within 12-20 min of many wineries on highway 12, are 3 miles from Hood Mountain Park (at the end of Los Alamos Road) and Annadel State Park (just across Highway 12 from Los Alamos Road), both with hiking, biking and equestrian trails. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is reached by Adobe Cyn Rd from Highway 12 in Kenwood. In addition to 25 miles of trails, it has a public observatory. Please note that if more than 3 beds/linen are used, an additional $40 cleaning fee is included to account for the time needed for doing the laundry.

Harvest Time at the Acadia House

Three couples spent 5 great days at the Acadia House during the middle of the grape harvest. The house was well furnished and had all the best tools for cooking at home. We picked up fresh seafood, cheese, and mushrooms in San Francisco on the way up and finished stocking up at the nearby Safeway store on the edge of Santa Rosa and had two great evening meals while at the house. Other evening meals were taken in St. Helena and Yountville. The bedrooms are arranged so that each couple has their own bathroom, but you do have to climb stairs to get to them. The sound system at the house is fabulous. Although music is available, we brought our own CDs. WiFi is available at the house. There is also a very nice piano available. There is a wonderful deck on the house to have your morning coffee, evening happy hour, or even grill your evening dinner. Each evening, we also enjoyed the hot tub located on the deck. The house is located in the hills between Napa Valley and Sonoma Valley, so we had to wind our way through the hills to get to the wineries, but it was beautiful scenery. Debby gave us very precise directions prior to our arrival, so we had no problem finding the property. If you like privacy, this is the place for you!

Great for Groups/Reunions

My girlfriends and I had a reunion trip and stayed at the love tree house. We had a blast! The accommodations were lovely - plenty of space, stocked kitchen with all necessities, mock fire place, great speakers and turn-table, etc. We arrived to a handwritten welcome note and gift from the owner. The bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The open kitchen/living area made for a great communal space. We took advantage of the hot tub and deck.

The only tricky thing to think carefully about is that while the listing says sleeps 10, I am glad we had fewer than 10 in the house. The 9th and 10th sleeping spaces are a little creative with a pull-out couch in the open dining/office area and sharing a futon (I think - that or sleeping on the couch in the living room). If you don't mind snuggling closely with a friend or sleeping in a common space, then no worries. We had seven in our group and we fit very comfortably!

Wonderful place, beautiful spacious home

We loved it for our women’s group retreat. The one small negative was that the dining room table was squeezed next to the office area in a smaller room instead of in the beautiful spacious living room area.

Although it is not uncommon for larger groups to just move the dining table into the main living area, I will make that option more apparent for future groups. In addition, we are currently remodeling the kitchen, and will increase the size of the eating bar to accommodate groups of 8.

Lovely retreat, beautiful house!

We loved our stay at Acadia House. What a beautiful, well-kept, open and spacious house!

Plus, for us as music lovers, a beautiful piano was there, and our more practiced hands produced beautiful music to go with the vaulted space.

Debby and Mel are extremely responsive and friendly and it was an easy house to take care of.

One of a kind, amazing home

Deborah and Mel’s home is incredible in every way - I don’t even know where to begin. Getting there is challenging once you’re off the main access street, and onto the one-way road. I suggest you arrive during daylight. It is well worth the trek. We stayed over Thanksgiving weekend with 6 adults and 2 kids, we had plenty of room and enjoyed every part of the property. The living room was our main hang out, with a cozy fire, and great lighting. The whole place is comfy and welcoming. I felt so lucky to have somehow stumbled upon this retreat, and no one who came will forget it soon. We made a big breakfast one morning and spent time on the deck & in the hot tub. We took a hike and saw the leaves falling. The beds were all comfortable and warm. The house is stunning and the photos don’t do it justice. It’s beautifully decorated and there are little surprises to discover from the art on the walls, the fun lighting, the LP collection, & the wall of windows. I want to come back with my girlfriends for a writers’ retreat. Really glad that Acadia House survived the fires, I hope it remains forever. If you have a chance, take your loved ones here and stay at an unforgettable home. Deborah’s directions and communication were clear and easy. Thank you for your hospitality.

Acadia House is located in the heart of Sonoma County, close to numerous wineries, restaurants, shopping, golf and other amenities, yet secluded on 20 private acres of hills and majestic oak trees, only 5-7 miles from 3 state and regional parks for hiking and biking. The weather is generally sunny and beautiful from April through October, yet as our property is also only 45 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, the cooler marine air nearby keeps the summer days from getting too hot. Night time temperatures are cool and refreshing. We are 15-30 minutes from numerous attractions, including the spa's of Calistoga, the famed Sonoma Square, and of course the wineries, restaurants and shopping of Sonoma, Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Calistoga, and Santa Rosa.
