Need a break from the stress of city life? Do you enjoy outdoor activities? Come to the Cumberland Plateau and stay at the Carriage House. If you love hiking, cycling, and outdoor activities you can do them here or practically anywhere in a thirty-mile radius, in which numerous waterfalls are located. South Cumberland State Park Visitor and Information Center is about 7 minutes away. The park, which includes Sewanee Natural Bridge, Fiery Gizzard Trail (ranked in the top 25 by Backpacker), Foster Falls, Savage Gulf, Stone Door, Greeter Falls, Meadow Trail and Grundy Lakes has some of the most noted hiking trails in the country. The Mountain Goat Trail, between Sewanee and Monteagle, is also a lot of fun. If you truly need to relax, go no further than the gardens and trails of the Carriage House. We are nestled approximately 1.5 miles from Highway 56 on part of a 400-acre farm. The Carriage House is the end of the trail and is quiet and peaceful. The butterfly garden attracts many visitors. It is filled with butterfly bushes, bee balm, lantana, phlox, lilies and of course, butterflies. Hostas, trilliums, and columbine make up the shade garden. Red Bud, dogwood and river birch are beautiful spring, summer, and fall. A short walk away is the lake. The ducks are very friendly and love to be fed. Hopefully, you'll also see a visiting Blue Heron, eagle, deer or turkey. We have built a cabin on the lake, you can watch the fish jump or other wildlife from the porch, fish from the jetty or pitch horseshoes on the dam. We've also added a picnic area with a firepit in the cabin area. From the lake, walk up the trail and visit our miniature donkeys, Lizzie and Sadie or go in the other direction to Buzzard Rock with its spectacular view of the gulf and Payne's Cove. We don't charge you to bring your pet and we've added a deck to the entrance where you can keep them when they want some fresh air.
Are you music lovers? In March 2018, Bluegrass Underground began performances in its new home, the Caverns, at the foot of Monteagle Mountain. The Caverns showcases the two best things about Tennessee: our natural beauty and our music. The Caverns is a full-fledged music venue hosting performances year round. Several of these concerts will air across the nation on PBS channels. Bluegrass Underground is a short., scenic drive down the mountain.
My wife and I are retired teachers. She has several piano students and, in fact, the Carriage House is her music studio when we have no guests. We love animals. That's why we have dogs, miniature donkeys, cats, ducks, chickens, and fish. Our two outside dogs, a Great Pyrenees, and a German Shepherd have important jobs. They greet the guests and protect the property. Although we still hear coyotes, Roxie and Charley are always on the job, keeping them away. Our miniature donkeys are our most recent addition and they love attention, treats, and pets.
Jim DeLozier purchased this apartment in 1948
We've dreamed of a home on the bluff for years and 10 years ago we built our house. We are living our dream.
Seclusion. We live almost two miles from the highway, with no through traffic, one neighbor across the creek, bluff views and miles to walk in all directions.
Had a great time .beautiful place and great owners .thx for great time very helpful
Wonderful property. We will definitely be back!
The Carriage House is a lovely place to unwind and enjoy the nature all around. My husband and I, along with our pet, visited on a cool November weekend when the leaves were falling. We enjoyed the walking around the property and visited several nearby landmarks. Be ready to "unplug". Our phone service was great but the wi-fi was spotty. There is no television service so we enjoyed watching some old videos. The place was very clean and the bed was comfortable. We enjoyed visiting with the owners pets, and were delighted to see the miniature donkeys, ducks and chickens.
Perfect place to stay for exploring the area! Loved the chickens, dogs and donkeys!
My wife and I really enjoyed our stay in the DeLozier's Carriage House. It was clean and comfortable with a beautiful deck. Our hosts were friendly and helpful.
My wife and I recently enjoyed some time away from home at the Carriage House. While the house itself was nice, we especially enjoyed the property and the scenic setting the house offered. We were even accompanied on several walks by their two friendly pups.
The house is far enough out there to get away from things for a while, yet close to small towns like Monteagle, which has unique shops and sights to see. We even took a day trip to Chattanooga while we were there and enjoyed everything the area had to offer.
If we are ever back in the area, I'm sure we will enjoy another stay at the Carriage House.
We are located atop the plateau about 1.5 miles from Highway 56. We are surrounded by state parks, Savage Gulf, Foster Falls, Fiery Gizzard, and other parts of the South Cumberland State Park. We're about 4 miles, as the crow flies, from The Caverns where Bluegrass Underground puts on some fabulous shows, underground, naturally. That's about 12 miles if you'd rather drive. You might be interested in seeing the historic coke ovens or walking the trails around Tracy Lakes. After your hike, visit the oldest bakery in Tennessee, The Dutch Maid Bakery. The University of the South is only a short distance away, where cultural activities abound. Concerts, plays, and guests speakers are regular fare. Head in the opposite direction and visit Beersheba Springs with its historic Methodist Assembly Grounds and its original log homes.
If you are hungry a 10- minute drive takes you to Monteagle for fast food or relaxed dining. The Smoke House offers live music on weekends. High Point provides historic dining on the summit between Chicago and Miami. Local legend has it that Al Capone stayed at High Point on trips between his Chicago and Florida homes. If you're looking for a quick meal or tasty sandwich the Mountain Goat Deli is where many hikers, cyclists, and students stop.
If you want to stay closer to home we are located on a 400- acre farm with several miles of bluff views, walking trails, and roads. Bring your camera.

The reservation software asks for payment on the day the reservation is made, even if it's 5 minutes to midnight. Please pay at your convenience. Also, the payment requests states that you should call before paying. If you're using a credit card I see no need to call, unless that's something you want to do.
