About the property

2 bedroom, 1 bath private oasis

For those looking for an escape from the fast-paced life of the city, and who want to disconnect from the rat-race, this little 1920 farmhouse is the perfect solution. This house takes you back to a time when life was simple. Relax on the covered front porch overlooking the pasture and pond, and listen to the soothing sounds of the rushing stream and the joyful chorus of nature. Curl up with a book in one of the home's cozy nooks, or go for a invigorating morning walk along the gravel roads or trails through the many acres of mature forests that surround the house. Kick back in the hot tub on the cool nights and enjoy the firefly show, start a warm fire in the fire pit, or just lay out under the stars of the protected Dark Skies area to take in the magnificence of creation.

About Benjamin Ray

I grew up in Wilmington, NC, went to school at NC State and Lees-McRae, obtained a Business degree and have invested in real estate for about 11 years. I left my management job with Food Lion after 15 years of employment, to start a career as a real estate agent years ago...and love it! I moved to town in Boone in 2012, and decided to keep this property for friends and family to use, and to rent out for others to enjoy as we have for years!

Benjamin Ray purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Benjamin Ray chose Purlear

After visiting the mountains with friends to hike numerous times, I bought this little cabin as my first home, while I lived in Charlotte so that I would have a place to escape from the city on the weekends. Of course, the more I escaped, the more difficult is was for me to return to the traffic, the heat, and the smells of the metro. After owning it for a year, a job opened up for me in the mountains, and I gladly accepted! And I've never looked back!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The first time I drove down the long driveway through the mature canopy of trees, and heard the sound of the stream from my car, I knew this was my place of paradise. The solitude and the beauty of untouched nature has been my refuge for 13 years. I embraced the rich history of the house and its stone steps and patio made from the rocks from the creek, and the oak beams and frame, hand cut on site, all still standing after 90 years of use and neglect. I had the privilege of restoring the home completely and making it my own, from the roof to the floor and even further by having the whole house lifted 2 feet to help preserve it for years to come. I've enjoyed the simple charm of watching the thousands of butterflies that come every year to the butterfly trees behind the house, the wildlife sightings of deer, hawks, waterfowl, turkey, groundhogs, raccoon, and even a bear, the nightly display of the brilliant lights of the fireflies, and of course, the STARS!

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thank you so much for letting us use your house. We had an awesome time. Saw several shooting stars. She said it was much better in person than the photos. We had dinner in Boone, at Blackcat burrito Friday night before we went there. Saturday we went to Grandfather mountain and Linville Caverns. And then spent the afternoon at the house. We didn't want to leave, and we can't wait till we can get an opportunity to go back. Loved the drive in, be its a handful in the winter time. The showerhead leaked a little, I tightened it up some, may need some sealant on it. Again, thank you.

Rustic and charming with a little calming effect after a rock on the porch watching the rain.

  • 5 of 5

When we first walked through the door, we were a little let down, It looked smaller than we thought. By the end of the first day, we were in love. It rained everyday. It would be clear, we should step outside and the rain would start again. We put on our ponchos and went out and had a great time anyway. My daughter and I needed this time away from all our daily stresses. We had beautiful, rainy trips through the Parkway, We went walking about some of the small towns around, and we went to Tweetsie Railroad. But the best visit was getting back to our cabin and going out in the rain and playing in the stream or fishing in the little pond. It was a wet, calming, enjoyable week.

I am an author and am writing my third book, this would have been a great place to sit and write, no interruptions, and beauty all around.

Perfect, private getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely treasured our time at this picturesque house and its surrounding property. It was the perfect size for our 2 kids and pup. Our 9 and 11 year old spent hours exploring the property and all of its features. We fished, enjoyed the hot tub, had a fire, and just enjoyed the ambiance that is so special about this place. We truly had no need to leave for the 3 days we were there. We booked this place because our 5 year old beloved Golden Retriever was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma. We’d booked this trip as soon as she was diagnosed to give her one last family adventure. We now have some absolutely priceless memories with her swimming in the pond, following the children down the creek, and sunning in the grass. We are so grateful for this magical place and its dog friendly accommodations. The owners put a great deal of effort into the little details...sometimes it’s these small touches that mean so much. We look so forward to a return trip!!!

Nice cabin. Bedding could use some updating. Stairs are pretty narrow. Overall nice stay.

Nice cabin. Bedding needs updating and the stairs are narrow to the second floor. Very quiet setting. Perfect place to get away from it all. Overall nice trip.

Love the Old Home Place

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful location with great landscaping—large cedar trees, a walnut tree, rhododendrons, and a pond. Plus mountain road and a mountain stream, The House was decorated beautifully for fall. The beds were comfortable and the house had everything we needed. Dream vacation site near lots of interesting places. Loved it.

Exceeded All Expectations

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming cottage in a fairytale setting. The house was well cared for, very clean, and had everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped and spacious. Falling asleep to the sound of the gently running creek was a nice treat as well.
