About Benjamin Ray
I grew up in Wilmington, NC, went to school at NC State and Lees-McRae, obtained a Business degree and have invested in real estate for about 11 years. I left my management job with Food Lion after 15 years of employment, to start a career as a real estate agent years ago...and love it! I moved to town in Boone in 2012, and decided to keep this property for friends and family to use, and to rent out for others to enjoy as we have for years!
Benjamin Ray purchased this Farmhouse in 2004
Why Benjamin Ray chose Purlear
After visiting the mountains with friends to hike numerous times, I bought this little cabin as my first home, while I lived in Charlotte so that I would have a place to escape from the city on the weekends. Of course, the more I escaped, the more difficult is was for me to return to the traffic, the heat, and the smells of the metro. After owning it for a year, a job opened up for me in the mountains, and I gladly accepted! And I've never looked back!
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The first time I drove down the long driveway through the mature canopy of trees, and heard the sound of the stream from my car, I knew this was my place of paradise. The solitude and the beauty of untouched nature has been my refuge for 13 years. I embraced the rich history of the house and its stone steps and patio made from the rocks from the creek, and the oak beams and frame, hand cut on site, all still standing after 90 years of use and neglect. I had the privilege of restoring the home completely and making it my own, from the roof to the floor and even further by having the whole house lifted 2 feet to help preserve it for years to come. I've enjoyed the simple charm of watching the thousands of butterflies that come every year to the butterfly trees behind the house, the wildlife sightings of deer, hawks, waterfowl, turkey, groundhogs, raccoon, and even a bear, the nightly display of the brilliant lights of the fireflies, and of course, the STARS!

This little gem was not little at all! The cabin was just perfect for our two small families to come together for our annual trip to the mountains. Our kids enjoyed exploring the property and finding gold (shiny little pebbles) in the stream. Although this was a little further from some of the hiking and climbing we did it was still an easy drive into downtown Boone for lunch or dinner and walking around the shopping area. And if you don't want to go out to eat (which we only did half the time) the kitchen is stocked to cook your own meals. The owners definitely take pride in their property and making their guests stay as comfortable and delightful as possible. The 'extras' they left for us were such an added bonus! We would absolutely recommend this property to couples or families.

Paradise for people and pups
The perfect getaway on a property that is nothing short of incredible. You will find yourself being so thankful the owner was willing to even share such a perfect piece of land. Beautiful creeks, ponds and open fields...perfect for dogs to explore and we really enjoyed the fire pit and wandering the property with our dogs. Had the pleasure of meeting the owner on our way out- not only has he maintained the property beautifully he genuinely seems to care about you having a happy experience. Can’t say enough good about this place...farmhouse has charm and character and the owners give it a personal touch that creates a warm feeling of hospitality. Short trip to Boone and beautiful views on the way! We will be back as I never wanted to leave!
Beautiful and Relaxing!
Arriving at the home, we instantly found it spotless and welcoming. The home itself was very comfortable, and the owners had gone out of their way to create little homey touches. The property was gorgeous. We could not have asked for a nicer, quieter setting.
We enjoyed the ponds, fire pit, hot tub and just relaxing on the front porch. The countryside around us was so quiet that it was amazing. The lack of light in the area made for excellent stargazing when the sky was clear.
We are already planning a return trip next year.
The owners description of the property is right on point. The scenery surrounding this charming little house is priceless.
We had a wonderful time and the property is incredible! It was so nice to bring our dog along and she loved having all that space! We were attending a wedding in the area and decided to go with this over a hotel in Boone and I’m so glad we did! (Heads up if you are visiting the Sky Retreat this is SO close!) We really appreciated the strong WiFi connection so we weren’t *too* off the grid. Overall we had a wonderful time and would definitely consider staying again!
