About this property

Pt Reyes 2 Cottage Retreat Over Tomales Bay from $375/nt (for Chalet only)

NEW VACATION RENTAL! Private 5 acre forested, hillside retreat overlooking Tomales Bay and the hills of West Marin, just a few minute walk to historic Inverness town through a private trail. Great for larger family event or very special stay for a couple or group of friends. The “Oaktopia Refuge” is nestled amidst the oaks of the Inverness Ridge and is surrounded by parkland of the Pt Reyes National Seashore.

A chalet and 2nd cottage have an Old Inverness Charm and a warmth that will either compel you to spend your time relaxing on site, or serve as a welcome refuge after a day of hiking; swimming; boating; biking; bird-, seal-, whale-, and elk-watching; oystering; or simply sightseeing. Oaktopia Refuge is located 5 minutes from historic Pt Reyes Station, with its bookstores, local artisans, and restaurants; is just minutes to the hidden and not-so-hidden beaches of Tomales Bay; and is perfectly located for easy access to all the jaw-dropping hiking trails and Pacific Ocean beaches of Pt Reyes National Seashore.

The 2 story chalet has a front entrance that overlooks a deck, a lily pond, and the Inverness Ridge. The backside of the chalet has sliding paned wooden doors that open to a hot tub and classic views of Tomales Bay. The ground floor also has a full kitchen, dining area, propane-powered hearth, pullout couch and a piano. The upstairs is a slanted-roof, open-loft area with 2 full beds, and can also house a child’s bed (sleeps 5-6 comfortably).

The cottage, available for only an extra $150/night (except in high season), has a rustic, tasteful wooden interior, wood-burning and electric furnaces, a full kitchen, a main room with queen bed and dining area, a bedroom with a double futon on a frame, and a deck with a gorgeous view of the bay (sleeps 3-4 comfortably). There also is a separate wooden shingled studio that can be used for a yoga or meditation space, as a game room, or as an art studio, or a fun sleeping cabin for kids in the summer. While Oaktopia Refuge is perfect for couples and friends, it is also child and family-friendly, with a swing-set, a swinging hammock as well as a large stone patio for basketball or badminton.

Only 1 hour from Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. We invite you to come stay in this unique and special retreat – for just a weekend to re-charge , or for a full week or 2 to really get to know the extraordinary natural wonder and cultural treasure that is Pt Reyes National Seashore. If you have a smaller group, please inquire.

Perfection
Lucked into Dean’s place at the last minute, and very glad I did. A rustic charmer with good vibes to spare, the Chalet was clean, spacious and well appointed with all sorts of cozy amenities. Enjoy the perfect view of Tomales Bay and its iconic ‘shipwreck’ from anywhere on the property, and settle in for a memorable stay.

Better than expected
So private, so beautiful, the photos do not do this home-away-from-home justice. Perfect location. A cabin-in-the-woods experience just minutes from town and from the hiking trails in the park. Great communication from the host. Would recommend and return!

Amazing location but unclear description and not well maintained
Two of us (one in her 40s, one in her 80s) stayed here for a weekend. As other reviewers have noted, the listing as 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom on VRBO is inaccurate and should be modified, as you have to pay more to rent a separate cottage to have the second bedroom and bathroom. This is really a 1 bedroom, 1 bath open-floor cottage. The redeeming feature of this rental is its location and extraordinary views over the shipwreck in Inverness and Tomales Bay. Indeed, we very much enjoyed sitting on the couch looking out over the bay. The "chalet" itself is a quaint, open plan cottage, with no internal doors for privacy except on the bathroom, which is upstairs. There are more than a dozen uneven steps outside down to the cottage and though there are light fixtures, the pathway is not lit as these fixtures are not working. The kitchen is equipped with worn-out appliances (a coffee maker with all the button labels worn away and a button popped out, for example, so we had to google an image to see how to make it work; non-stick pans with scratched up insides; the refrigerator door would not stay closed). As other reviewers have noted, the sheets are threadbare (there were actually holes in the sheets I used), pillows are heavily stained, and the second bed is actually a futon with a large stain on the mattress. In addition, it was not clean - there was abundant short white hair (cat?) on my pillowcase and a healthy dose of dust. We have rented several other properties in the area and for the price, I would have expected a much better maintained rental. This felt like staying at a friend's house who moved their old sheets from the 80s and furniture they didn't need anymore to their country cottage.

Chalet is not two bedrooms or bathrooms.
The view and location are lovely. However, VRBO should not list the Chalet as 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The chalet itself has one open sleeping space and one bathroom, both up a set of steep and somewhat slippery stairs. As owner adds in his description you have to rent the cottage for an extra fee if you want an additional bedroom and bath. While some people found the inside "rustic" to me it seemed rather worn, certainly for the price we were charged.

About the host

We are a family of 5 (the 5th was on the way when this photo in Patagonia was taken!) who love to travel to the world's most beautiful places. Living in San Francisco, we have spent many, many glorious days and nights in the Point Reyes area. It is a magical part of the world. We have always dreamed of having a place all our own there, a place close by where we can relax, hike, kayak, bike, see wildlife, read, cook well, eat well and enjoy friends and family. We found a very special retreat...a place our twin boys named 'Oaktopia Refuge' -- a play on Utopia (that's what they feel about the place) and Oak trees (lots of Oaks up there). If you like living the good life in a rustic setting, this place is for you. Because there are two dwellings on the site, it is large enough to host an extended family or group of friends, or small enough for a weekend get-away for a couple or a small family with kids.

Why they chose this property

Oaktopia Refuge is perfectly located -- only 1 hour or so from San Francisco or Berkeley. You can walk down a trail and get to the town of Inverness, and check out its galleries and library, or drive right over to Pt Reyes Station and buy phenomenal organic produce and local cheeses, or hear music at the Dance Hall. Or you can bike a few minutes to Shell Beach or Heart's Desire Beach on the bayside, or drive a few minutes north to Abbott's Lagoon hike or McLure's Beach on the Pacific Ocean side, or head west to the Lighthouse and Drakes' Bay. Finally, why not plop your kayak or canoe into the water and transport yourself that way?

What makes this property unique

We find that we are able to escape the stresses of modern life in a remarkably rapid timeframe and get into a different zone with each other. Our biggest problem is deciding whether to stay in and enjoy the comfort of the chalet and cottage, or venture out for a hike, a swim, or an art showing. We also find that the retreat, if you also rent the guest cottage, is large enough to have 2 families up, without getting in each others' way, or small enough for parties of 2-4.
