The most private and breathtaking spot in the Cowichan Valley! This vacation getaway is the only building on a 40 acre property surrounded by beautiful Douglas Fir and Arbutus forest. Feel like you have truly gotten 'away from it all', but stay within a 15 min drive of Duncan and Lake Cowichan.

We offer a completely unique and eco-friendly rental as a welcome alternative to the usual options. Learn that the ultimate in 'eco-friendly' can also be beautiful, contemporary, and comfortable. This custom home was built with local, natural, and sustainable materials and is completely 'off-grid'. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to stay in a 'cob' home. Cob is a mixture of clay, sand, and straw - it's what the exterior walls are made of, and they hold up the roof without a single stick of wood! Of course, our home is highly engineered and code-approved - one of the very few of it's kind in North America! Whether you're looking for something eco-friendly, unique, private, or just beautiful with breathtaking views this home is an ideal place to relax and enjoy nature.

Accommodations include two bedrooms with queen size beds, as well as a pull-out double/queen sofa bed. The beds have eco-foam mattresses, down duvets, and bamboo and organic cotton sheets. The bathroom includes a shower and separate water-closet. The contemporary kitchen has 13 ft ceilings and the most energy-efficient appliances on the market. The living room features a beautiful curved cob bench and rammed-earth open burning fireplace for warmth and atmosphere. All the home's finishes are made with natural materials, so those with sensitivities can breathe easy, and everyone can feel good about staying in a healthy place without harmful toxins.

For your outdoor enjoyment, there is a deck and patio table just outside the dining room's double doors, which can be opened up for one large indoor/outdoor eating area. There is also a bbq and fire pits, for when the season allows. Our property connects with Cowichan Valley Provincial Park and it's many hiking trails for endless exploration from the top of the Bluff to the River bottom.

We are both originally from the prairies, and moved to the west coast in 2004. We have busy lives and jobs in Victoria, but for two years we spent all of our free time building and finishing this eco-home!

Why Tonya or Leon chose Duncan

Ever since we moved to Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley has been our favourite place to get away to; whether for a day of food and wine tours, or hiking and exploration, or just some relaxation in a beautiful setting. It encompasses everything that we love so much about the west coast and we have never tired of things to do and see in the area.

When we decided to build the most eco-friendly vacation home possible, we searched around the entire lower half of Vancouver Island to find the perfect spot. It had to be a spot with a lot of space and privacy and beautiful views to showcase the best of the valley, not a nearby sub-division or the possibility of one in the future. It was important for us to be able to offer guests an experience where they truly feel they have escaped everyday life. These things were not easy to find on an island like this which is such a popular place to live and visit (and rightly so!). When we found Stoltz Bluff, we knew it was just the right spot from the very beginning. We hope you visit and experience some of the same magic we have felt there.

What makes this house unique

This home is absolutely one of a kind. The two of us designed and built it ourselves, along with it's off-grid systems. The story of this home is a long and adventurous one! It has had it's trials and joys, and we are very happy to have made it through to the end. We have done an immense amount of learning and research over the last two years and are now excited to share that knowledge and our story with others. Truly restful.

Peaceful & Gorgeous

We booked this property as a peaceful family retreat and to give us the opportunity to disconnect from our busy lives. The property and the region more than exceeded our expectations.

The House: Our sons, 8 & 10, have been studying energy conservation. The home was a wonderful opportunity to show them how families can live very well with a smaller carbon footprint. We were amazed by the "Truth Window", which shows the natural materials comprising the cobb house walls. The appliances and lighting were perfect and we never lacked for hot shower water. The house itself is gorgeous and well decorated with comfortable beds, and furnishings.

The Property: Stunning! I woke at 4:30 every morning just to watch the sun rise over the mountains. The sun didn't set until almost 9:45 so we usually waited until midnight or later to enjoy the stars. The quiet surrounding us and the clean, night air was amazing. We found hiking trails to walk and plenty of boulders to climb. The driveway is very long with a steep grade. We highly recommend a car with good clearance to pass through the grass between your tires. (It's a very fun and stunning way to get to and from your house each day!).

The Region: We didn't have a clue that we were landing in the middle of Canada's wine and boating country! There is so much to do around the property and within short drives. Just at the end of the driveway is Stoltz pool, where we spent several afternoons wading, swimming and exploring. Parks, wineries, lakes, restaurants and more are within a short drive. We also recommend Heritage Indian restaurant in Duncan.

We also recommend the Duncan Totem Pole tours, Genoa Bay Cafe for lunch or dinner and Ecoventures in Cowichan for whale watching. We can't wait to return.
