About Tonya or Leon
We are both originally from the prairies, and moved to the west coast in 2004. We have busy lives and jobs in Victoria, but for two years we spent all of our free time building and finishing this eco-home!
Tonya or Leon purchased this House in 2010
Why Tonya or Leon chose Lake Cowichan
Ever since we moved to Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Valley has been our favourite place to get away to; whether for a day of food and wine tours, or hiking and exploration, or just some relaxation in a beautiful setting. It encompasses everything that we love so much about the west coast and we have never tired of things to do and see in the area. When we decided to build the most eco-friendly vacation home possible, we searched around the entire lower half of Vancouver Island to find the perfect spot. It had to be a spot with a lot of space and privacy and beautiful views to showcase the best of the valley, not a nearby sub-division or the possibility of one in the future. It was important for us to be able to offer guests an experience where they truly feel they have escaped everyday life. These things were not easy to find on an island like this which is such a popular place to live and visit (and rightly so!). When we found Stoltz Bluff, we knew it was just the right spot from the very beginning. We hope you visit and experience some of the same magic we have felt there.
What makes this House unique
This home is absolutely one of a kind. The two of us designed and built it ourselves, along with it's off-grid systems. The story of this home is a long and adventurous one! It has had it's trials and joys, and we are very happy to have made it through to the end. We have done an immense amount of learning and research over the last two years and are now excited to share that knowledge and our story with others. We hope to hear from you and will be happy to tell you more and answer your questions. Our website and blog tell the story of our building experience, so please visit it for even more information (may be 'under construction').

Excellent! Lovely peaceful place!
Amazing views, wonderful self-sufficient house
Loved the cob house, loved the thoughtful & beautiful furnishings - even the books were interesting and added to the experience. The Cowichan valley has a generous array of food-relates activities and we had a wonderful 4-day stay. Thank you Tonya & Leon!
TLDR: if you’re a nature person, you’ll love it.
If you want some time to your self in isolation, this is the place for you. It’ll be you, the mountain, trees, and a whole range of possible animals, that’s it. We loved every second of it, it’s a very well thought out, off-grid property with nothing to do except to be a human in nature. If you’re not an outdoor/nature person, I highly recommend at least to go with friends, or not go at all :D
The light pollution is low enough you get a nice star gazing experience as well. If you are a private person, you’ll love it as you don’t have to worry about seeing anybody when you’re outside the house.
My three year old daughter had a really good time as well. She was playing outside most of the time, and they had an interesting range of games/puzzles for her to learn/play with.
Make sure you conserve and you’ll be fine. We never had any electricity/water/hot water/heating shortage, for example we never turned on the generator, but we did watch our consumption. You don’t have to go overboard, but keep an eye on things.
We were here for a bike race and it was the perfect spot to relax and unwind with our two young kids, but still close enough to the action to find some fun adventures. We visited a few local attractions while here. The house was well appointed and had everything we needed and a few surprises we didn’t know we wanted! Thanks for the stay, it was great!
Stoltz Bluff and the beautiful house created with an incredible amount of vision, passion, and dedication was exactly what I hoped and dreamed it would be. The house is gorgeous: solid, sheltering, with a simplicity of design and decor that breathes calm and peace. What an ode to straw, clay, and off-grid living! The spot at the top of the bluff is so private but with views so sweeping that you can't wait to wake up to see the sun rise and sit outside with a coffee, a book, and your thoughts. The only noise is the music of birds and rustling trees and grasses. And whatever CDs or playlists you bring along: the acoustics in the house were wonderful. It will forever be an oasis of serenity in my memories, and I hope to come back again whenever I need to recharge. Thank you, Tonya & Leon!
An experience to remember
It is a unique experience to spend time on top of a mountain free of all distractions.
The Cowichan Valley is the 'bread basket' of Vancouver Island! It offers a bounty of farms, markets, and wineries to visit, along with delicious local, organic offerings at many restaurants. Cowichan Bay has the distinction of being officially designated as North America’s first Cittaslow Community.
Along with it's food and wine offerings, the Cowichan Valley is home to the type of spectacular views and outdoor activities the west coast is known for. Hike around Stoltz Bluff and enjoy a 360 degree view of the entire valley. A paradise for bird watchers, hikers, and all those who enjoy wildlife and outdoor activities (including just relaxing at the river, lake, or ocean!).
