What makes this house unique

Most of our guests at Brown Bear Retreat are families enjoying each other for a great vacation get to together. Unfortunately we can't accommodate large crowds. Many of our requests for rentals are for more people than we can handle at Brown Bear. We watched this house being built in 2009 and when it came on the market we knew it would be perfect for the families we couldn't accomodate at our personal home. With 6000 - 7000 feet it can stretch to 20 if need be by adding the separate owners quarters.

Perfect for our Group

  • 5 of 5

I rented the house for a group of women who came up for the Living Proof Live Beth Moore event in Boone. The house was perfect for our needs. We were all able to hang out together in the den/kitchen/dining area. (We sanctified the place best we could – lots of prayer and rejoicing went on!)The bedrooms were large and accommodating, kitchen furnished perfectly, and we loved the way the house is decorated. It was cold when we were there so we didn't get to enjoy the decks or being outside much. It's not too far from town. Some women enjoyed brisk morning walks, but I enjoyed the warmth of the home. The lovely back road leads you to the Mast General Store in Valle Crucis if you are into visiting such a place. Mary was super great to work with. I was able to "pick her brain" about renting through HomeAway as I have my own house in Southern Pines listed for rent. She offered lots of great advice. Thanks, Mary!

West Tampa, Florida

Great home for a large family (three infact) getaway!!!

  • 5 of 5

We lost our mom last year and decided that we needed a family vacation to heal and began new traditions with our own families as we once enjoy with our parents, this home was the PERFECT spot!!! There were 15 adults, 2 kids and one baby, and there was still room for more. The home was very clean, very well supplied and had all the necessities we needed to cook large family dinners! In fact, one of the reason we chose this home was the large dinner table, as each night we were all able to eat together and truly enjoy each anothers company. The two couch beds on the bottom floor game room were perfect for the young adults, they had just enough privacy. The master bedroom and bathroom was super nice and the two bedrooms upstairs were extremely large (one of the bedroom even had a crib, which was a nice surprise for us)!!! One of the previous comments mentioned the top floors being cold, I can tell you that I personally slept in one of the top floor bedrooms and it was very much so we cracked our window the night it snowed. The home is in a great location, easy to get to, especially with a 15 passenger van and TONS to do in all the small towns around the area (we skied at both Beech and Sugar Mountains and tube at Hawksnest). Mary, the home owner, was extremely friendly and very responsive to all our questions or concerns, prior to getting there and once we were there. We highly recommend this home for large families who want to enjoy time together, we all left wanting just a few more day in this home and look forward to heading back to Wolf's Den in the future!!! Thank you so much Mary!!!!

Large house in average shape

  • 3 of 5

The house is located close to Boone and Banner Elk. It was advertised as a 5 bedroom but beware that the fifth "bedroom" is the basement game room. It does have a full bath and two pull out couches in the game room but is not conducive to sleeping while people playing pool, etc. it may work for some groups but did not for us. Having a pool table and hot tub was nice for our group though but The pool table was in need of repair. The pockets had holes so you were always picking the balls up off the floor.

The place is not maintained as well as I would have expected for a house in this price range.

For a house advertised to sleep 16, there are only 9 dinner plates, no decent serving bowls, no platters and mismatched silverware. Trying to cook and serve a large group was challenging. Carpets are stained and there was no heat in the upper 2 bedrooms. There are 3 levels and to enter the home you need to use the stairs so with snow and ice this made it tricky for the elders in our group. This was a very nice home at one time but needs a bit of TLC.

Owner's Response: I discussed the house set up of the bedrooms with this guest prior to her arrival. I explained that the house has four queen beds, three twin beds, 1 king bed and three pillow top queen sofas and the way the rooms were set up. It clearly states in our description that the lower level of the house has two queen pull out beds, a full bath and a door for privacy.. It also has a fireplace, pool table and a poker table in it's 700+ square feet. and can be used as a bedroom, game room OR both. She wanted the separate owners quarters until she realized there was a charge for the extra two bedrooms and full bath. There is a thermostat on every floor of this house. If you don't turn the heat up it won't get warmer. My electric bill covering the end of December tripled so I'm not sure why she said she had no heat. I've had two guests since who have had no problems. Again I have a service contract on the heating system. All she had to do was let me know. I don't doubt that the carpets need cleaning. I have them done quarterly but did not have it done this last quarter as we were coming into the mud, snow, ski gear and boots of the Ski season. I have a maintenance company come in twice a year to keep the house in shape and have a running list of items they will take care of on their next visit. The last time I was at the house there were plenty of dishes and I was not aware that there had been so much breakage. There will be an addition of 12 place setting and 102 new pieces of silverware on site this Wednesday. The kitchen has every appliance - slow cooker, electric griddle, electric fry pan, a Kuerig coffee maker as well as a 12 cup coffee pot. The matching serving pieces to my dishware have long since been broken and replaced by the many Pyrex dishes on site to be used for serving pieces. I try to keep it simple. I don't charge my guests for a broken glass, plate ,missing serving piece or ripped sheet. Most people rent my home to enjoy the mountains, the weather, scenery and each other in one large (6000 sq feet) well furnished house. I'm sorry this vacationer was unhappy. I knew from her phone calls during her stay that this review was coming. I wish her family and all my guests a Happy 2018..

A GREAT house for a large gathering!

  • 5 of 5

A group of 14 ladies enjoyed a retreat at this lovely home. Owner was great to work with, we had a few minor issues that were quickly resolved. Beds were very comfortable, living areas relaxing. After hiking it was so nice to come back and enjoy the hot tub. All 14 of us could sit around the large dining table and then we had a relaxed time at the fire pit enjoying s'mores and fellowship! We enjoyed our time at Wolf's Den immensely and hope to "retreat" there again! Recommend it highly......
