*Named L’Alizé for the Refreshing Breezes*

Nestled above a private cove beach (locally called a “keyhole”) on the South shore of the tropical island of Roatan, this large luxury home, enjoys both a constant sea breeze and a dramatic view of the Caribbean. L’Alizé derives its name from the French word for African trade winds, (alizés) which flow East to West during the warmest months of the year. These dramatic winds account for a such a surprising cooling effect on the hottest days, that it quickly becomes clear why Roatan’s earliest towns settled on the South side of the island where these winds rarely fail to cool and refresh while they keep the bugs in check. In January one guest wrote, "We toured the whole island and there isn't a more beautiful property on Roatan. I didn't use any Deet and didn't get a bite."

*L’Alizé Awarded the distinction of a luxury destination*

In 2014 L'Alize was awarded the distinction of a luxury destination for Homeaway’s Luxury Rentals site, by Andrew Harper, a leading luxury travel company TM, . One of 5 luxury rental properties on Roatan which have qualified for this prestigious rating (see luxury.homeaway ).

*L’Alizé Staff*

L’Alize wants to emphasize its incredibly private location, so we have staff to help you when needed, but the home will be privately yours.

We clean the home 3 days during your stay.

Edier lives close by and can help with maintenance and drive you around or run errands for you.

If you want to order meals we can help.

If you have special requests let us know.

*The Wild Side*

L’Alizé, where pristine jungle and iron shore meet the Caribbean, may not be for everyone. The beauty of the South Shore is also rugged and wild. Agouti ( in the Capybara family) and iguana scamper up the drive and onto the jungle covered hillside throughout the day. The stunning keyhole beaches just minutes walk from L’Alize, are just as they were 100 years ago. Each keyhole is bordered with ancient iron shore, home to sunning iguanas and Hama lizards and other wild creatures. We have even seen an occasional boa enjoying the sunny salt air. These coves can get mild to strong wave action in the afternoon breezes. This is a great thing for staying cool on the beach and at L’Alizé, and this is the #1 deterrent for bugs , but it does mean that water in the private keyhole can get rough, particularly as the breezes pick up in the afternoon. Most people can snorkel and enjoy the coral and underwater beauty without being bothered by the waves, but others may find the waves troublesome. The first keyhole gets more wave action than the second keyhole, which is narrower and so more protected. The iron-shore (ancient coral pushed out of the sea by volcanic activity) is interesting and how nature says “don’t touch”. This black coral contains fossils of ancient shells and a number of small animals and sea creatures make it their home. It is challenging to climb and the roughest surface most of us have ever touched, so please bring water shoes or tennis shoes, if you want to explore this unusual geologic formation. On these keyhole sandy beaches, there are no shops, restaurants or ice-cream stands, tourist kiosks, rentals, or boat taxis, just wildlife and you, if you so choose.

If your group has a mix of privacy seeking adventurers and tame-white sands-beach-lovers, you might make a concession to split time between the beaches on the wild south side and the tame north side. Ask Edier to drop you off for the afternoon in West Bay Beach. Get your fill of ice cream and the crowds, then come back to L’Alizé. We are only a mile apart yet our beaches are beautifully different. If you prefer tame, flat, white sandy beaches with tourist activity, a vacation rental or hotel on West Bay Beach may be more to your liking. We recognize that the privacy, peacefulness, and untamed nature of the Wild Side, is not for everyone.

*House Layout *

L’Alizé, is spaciously laid out to maximize the 3500 sq/ft., There are breathtaking views from each floor, patio, balcony and almost every bedroom. The third level has two spacious bedrooms and a convenient laundry room. The second level has a great room with kitchen, 1/2 bath, and a large porch for dining and lounging . The 1st level has 2 bedrooms, a living room and kitchen with a porch which opens to the pool patio and an open vista of the keyhole. All bedrooms are fitted with A.C. as is the common area on the second level and the guest house. Wireless Internet is available throughout the home.

The house is rented as a 4 bedroom home but, we offer discounts to smaller groups. The guest cottage is a perfect addition (see rates) if you need a 5th bedroom. This room is ideal for those who like a little more privacy. Its compact kitchen allows you the freedom to store snacks and more.

With 4 Kitchens, 6 bathrooms and many patios, guests can spread out and feel at home.

*L’Alizé suits a variety of tastes*

Nestled in a pristine wildlife retreat that exhibits a wide spectrum of eco systems, L’Alize abuts mangroves and dramatic iron shore with ancient coral. Pick a less breezy day, to take the Kayaks out for a ride to the second keyhole toward Pirates Cove. These kayaks will glide to sights few eyes have seen.

Whether celebrating family events with extended family or joining old friends or celebrating a romantic retreat, L’Alizé offers adventure or relaxation, luxury and convenience, privacy and plenty of nearby activities to suit all tastes.

About Rosanne

Owners' kids slack line across the path to the keyhole beach.

Rosanne who grew up in Italy, owned and managed an antebellum Inn in MS, and for the past 12 years and currently , works daily as a Nurse Anesthetist at a mission hospital on the North Coast of Honduras, realized that her background in hospitality and her intimate knowledge of Honduras and her people, could bring to a new level, how visitors experience the island of Roatan.

Jefferson Mckenney, a Board Certified General Surgeon, and founder and director of Loma de Luz Mission Hospital, who in his spare time, builds and designs structures using local talent and materials such as adobe and concrete. At the Loma de Luz Hospital compound on the North Coast of Honduras, Jeff has supervised building of over 40 structures over the last 20 years. He realized that he could put to use, his knowledge of Honduran building materials and techniques whenever he visits their getaway, L’Alizé. He is also pretty good at surgery as testified by the many poor Hondurans who know his name on the island and the mainland.

Rosanne purchased this house in 2010

Why Rosanne chose Bay Islands Honduras

A true getaway. Nestled in dramatic untamed beauty on pristine turquoise shores with abundant wildlife, makes this home a refuge as well as a great place to celebrate family gatherings. Restaurants, and grocery stores are only minutes away.

What makes this house unique

L'Alizé has all the modern conveniences of home with amazing privacy.. The view from the second floor great room took our breath away the first time since.. We never get used to the beauty.

The home is well maintained and includes a well trained staff to make a vacation truly relaxing.

L'Alize is a lovely place with all the amenities of home. The kitchen on the second floor has plenty of counter space and everything you need to cook your favorite meals. The BBQ on the deck is perfect for grilling up some fish! It seems that there is a great view of the ocean from every point. Whether enjoying a leisurely brunch on the deck, dining at the large table while gazing through the double doors at the ocean, or sitting on the comfy couch to watch a movie or play games, the view is always right in front of you. The beach is just a short stroll away and is very private. The keyhole (ocean inlet) is really lovely to cool off in, or as an entrance to great snorkeling to the right and the left. No cruise ship tourists have been standing on the coral here! There are caves to explore, iguana to watch scurrying over the rocks and other beaches nearby to visit as well. Some people love to swim and snorkel and explore, while others enjoy laying out and working on their tan. I like to do both and this is the perfect place! The benefits of privacy come with the small cost of a very steep hill to get to the main road. A rental car would be very helpful, but it is possible to walk up the hill and flag down a taxi for the short drive to West Bay or West End. We also got the phone number of a taxi driver who dropped us off and just called him to come get us when we wanted to go into town. Gumbalimba park is very close with zip lines and plenty of wildlife (including birds that will perch on your head and monkeys that crawl across your shoulders!) The dolphin show at Anthony's Key resort is always fun as is the little museum there with some information about the islands. If you tire of the peace and quiet, you can head into West End for some excellent dining and live music at several venues on the weekends. L'Alize is an all around great place to vacation. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a little piece of paradise!

Owner response: Thank you for your lovely review. We hope you will come back soon to enjoy this “little piece of paradise” .

Recommended for:Families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing, girls getaway, romantic getaway, families with young children.

Paradise in el Caribe!!!

  • 5 of 5

Lalize Vacation has been one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been. I am original from Panama, Central America but I live in Texas with my family. Growing up, I used to go to the beach almost every weekend but now, this is a commodity I only enjoy once or twice per year. Our Pacific beaches were fun, but very few had clear waters like el Caribe, which I love. This is the reason I chose Roatan. Honduras as our vacation rental this year. LALIZE not only has one of the most beautiful beaches, but also has a beautiful home, own pool, private beach access, kayaks to explore, ping pong table to play, Van and chofer for 15 passengers, great cook and a wonderful view of Nature. We also enjoyed West Bay beach, West End and Little French Key. No problem to find these wonders because of our chofer Eddy that took us everywhere we wanted. However, this place is not recommended for handicap people or children below 5 years old. The house is built in the side of a mountain, with several stairs without handrail which make the place a little dangerous for Little kids.

However, if you want to enjoy paradise and have the energy to enjoy this beautiful place, I highly recommend Lalize for your next vacation destination

Also staying here, you can help the owners with this great organization they created to help poor kids in Honduras: The Cornerstone Foundation. Awesome people and awesome work!!!

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

I knew I would be happy with the home from the pictures but it was even more amazing in person. Our trip included myself, my wife & two 11 year olds. The home had enough room for several families & had everything we could need. The views were just amazing. The pool was perfect. The keyhole beach was much closer than I thought. Even with some waves, the snorkeling was great and we spent many hours in the water here. We rent homes at least once a year but usually are only there early mornings & at night. This vacation, the majority of our time was spent here because everyone wanted to leave the beaches to come back "home". It stood apart from other rentals by being so peaceful & secluded which made it feel like our own private island. The owner was great about responding to emails & it was nice having staff we could contact if we needed anything. I couldn't imagine staying anywhere else!

Beautiful, private, and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

Ivan's food is fantastic, and he is so very kind. Eddy was always ready to help drive us to any excursions. Unfortunately, it was too windy during our stay to fully utilize the keyhole beach, but nonetheless, we were minutes from West Bay, so it mattered little. Our children ages 5-11 all enjoyed themselves thouroughly with snorkeling, zip-lining, dolphins, sloths, fishing, SUP boarding and are already asking when we can return. This place is wonderful and affords you the ability to access great places on the island but allows you to retreat to privacy after a day in the sun! Rosanne was fantastic to deal with and will answer any and all questions promptly and with a genuine hope that you enjoy your time at L'Alize! Thank you, thank you!

Owner's Response: I am thrilled your family had a great time at L'Aize. We so enjoy the beauty of this island and particularly the South shore with its inspiring untamed grandness, that we can't help but want to share what makes L'Alize so special. Roatan is an amazing island; Hondurans are lovely people. We want everyone to enjoy each aspect of this great place, as much as we do.

Absolutely Stunning

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful stay in Honduras. LAlize is set high in the landscape with breathtaking views of the ocean and the greenery native to Honduras. From the moment I contacted the owner to secure LAlize for my husbands surprise vacation to the time we arrived we were impressed by the home as well as the wonderful staff that welcomed us. Everyone was warm and inviting and extremely helpful. The home has its own private keyhole where we enjoyed amazing snorkeling as well as kayaking and had access to the many beautiful beaches on the island. Special thanks to Rosanne for helping us plan one of the best vacations we have had! We plan to return to LAlize on a future vacation!

Fantastic house and Amazing staff!

  • 5 of 5

Eight of us stayed at L'Alize last week for our spring break. We had a wonderful week on the beach and couldn't be happier with L'Alize. Dolce was a real gem and prepared delicious food for us as well as just being a delight to brush up on our Spanish with! Eddie was very reliable and easy to be with as well. Our internet worked well all week and we didn't even need to turn on the air conditioning with the pleasant cool breezes. The neighboring roosters woke us every morning, which we enjoyed! The winds were such that we were not able to snorkel at the key hole beach, but we did enjoy the beach itself! We dove with West Bay Divers, which was located very close to the house, and were treated very well there and had exceptional dives with exceptional dive masters. We highly recommend both L'Alize and West Bay Divers.

The best vacation we've been on

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 had the privilege of staying at L'Alize for the last week for our friend’s 50th birthday. We knew our stay would be amazing the minute we walked into the house and saw the views from the balcony. The home sits between lush trees and has an amazing ocean view. The home was very spacious four our party of 8, with four bedrooms - two on pool level and two on upper floor. The main floor included the kitchen which was very well equipped and a balcony that we used often to watch the stars at night or enjoy the daily breezes.

We rented the van and paid the additional fee to have Eddie drive us. I would highly recommend doing this as the roads in Roatan are filled with many holes and could be difficult to navigate as a visitor. Eddie was so accommodating and always arrived early with a smile on his face. It was also very easy to reach him with the loaner cell phones that were provided to us.

We had the privilege of having Dulce cook for us several times while we visited. Her cooking was by far the best food we ate while in Roatan (I didn’t love the restaurants we ate at). She was so sweet and accommodating. Everything was delicious. She was involved in an auto accident the day we left. We would love to hear if she is doing alright.

We enjoyed many activities during our stay. We ziplined, took a mangrove boat tour, hung out at several local bars but “Hole in the Wall” with bartender Captain Ed (who makes a good strong drink) was our favorite. Our favorite activity was taking a private boat trip to Cayos Cochinos. Our tour guide Osman who is located at the Bananarama Roatan Activities booth in West Bay was absolutely amazing. I highly suggest doing a tour this way even with the cost being $150 per person. Drinks, beer, vodka, rum, sodas, juices, water, lunch (coconut rice and beans, plantain chips and local fresh fish) snacks (fruit platter, chips and salsa) were all included. We visited 3 of the 15 islands, were able to snorkel and get to meet the Garifuna community. We truly felt like celebrities with Osman taking care of us. Be aware that the boat ride is about 1 hour. If you get sea sickness (like me), you will want to bring Dramamine.

The only thing I recommend bringing with you is bug spray (that contains deet). We didn’t have an issue with bugs at L’Alize however anywhere we visited had bugs and we were bitten.

Finally, the owner Rosanne was VERY easy to work with and was fast at communicating with me. She answe

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to offer great tips to future guests. Dulce's accident was thankfully a minor skid on her motorbike. Her scraped knee is all healed now but it gave us a bit of a scare. She is sorry she missed saying goodbye. Thanks for being great guests.
