Just What You Want

  • 5 of 5

I had driven by Leo Lake countless times when I owned a cabin on Clearwater in the 70s and before I moved to CA in the 90s. When I found Heart Rock on Leo on VRBO I thought it would be a great base to return with 3 generations of family (5 adults and 2 teens) and introduce them to the Gunflint Trail. Karla was a perfect host and her Heart Rock home of the Gunflint was better than I imagined; everyone in my trip expressed thanks for the choice every day. Wood floors, wood tongue and groove walls and ceilings and moldings throughout, and also blankets, pillows, and decorations just like a home on the Gunflint Trail should be. Plenty of room, places for all of us to gather together and cook, eat, play games (the cabin's game selection was amazing) and watch a DVD (another amazing selection to pick from). Also, many comfy places inside and outside for each of us to retreat to and read and write; also fishing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking right there on Leo and nearby - all of which we did in groups and singly and totally enjoyed. The beds were very comfy. The sounds of the Loons were magical. We saw loons on Leo from the dock and when we went out on the lake. The teen boy learned and and then honed his pinball techniques in the game room. His grandfather (my brother) enjoyed reading in the really big screened in porch. We spent some time at Hungry Jack Lodge 1.5 miles away - fishing, dinner, bar time, free wi-fi, and one afternoon 2 of us paid for a sauna and went for a swim. The Trail Center was also conveniently close and was a perfect stop for an afternoon ice cream treat for the teens. We brought raw peanuts, put them out in small batches in a designated container on the deck at Heart Rock and enjoyed watching the chipmunks and squirrel crack some open and cary others off to the woods. I highly recommend a trip up the Gunflint Trail to Chik-Wauk museum and trails - fabulous movie presentation of Gunflint Trail history, detailed exhibits, photos and stories of the settlers and resorts and owners, present ecology, scheduled talks and walks. We went on some easy and some really challenging trails there. Magical and heart warming week. Thanks.

beautiful quiet cabin retreat on the edge of the Boundary Waters

  • 5 of 5

great lake, great dock (two benches, each with two cupholders). two swings. one canoe, four kayaks. short distance to great hiking trails. This part of the BWCA (off the Gunflint trail) has more topography some great views from the hikes. very comfy beds. well supplied, including good cookware in the kitchen. beautiful fire pit (up away from lake). Beautiful fireplace in cabin. lots of toys for the kids (games, puzzles, pinball, paints). it was exactly what we were looking for - a quiet and beautiful retreat on the edge of the boundary waters. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. We had six people (four adults two kids) and were all comfortable. Note it is a more traditional cabin (smaller main room and fewer windows than the big modern cabins you might find on the north shore). And there is only one bathroom, so you have to be somewhat conscientious of the other guests during the morning bathroom routine. The upstairs loft doesn't have a door, so noise could be an issue if you have loud folks in the living room that want to stay up late and early sleepers upstairs.

Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

Gently nestled on quiet, clear Leo Lake, Heart R❤️ck Haven is a slice of heaven off the gunflint trail. The cabin has everything you need for a relaxing weekend enjoying the outdoors.

Our family of 5 (kids age 6, 6, 4) enjoyed fishing, kayaking, canoeing & exploring the artistic treasures on this property.

I felt so fortunate to enjoy this hidden gem. The owner Karla is so kind and was accessible when we had questions.

The bed in the master suite is like sleeping on a cloud. I had my best nights of sleep in years at this cabin.

Looking forward to returning soon!

Wonderful Cabin, Wonderful Location

  • 5 of 5

HeartRock Haven is a beautiful, inviting, and supremely comfortable cabin with a huge screen porch and sleeping arrangements on all three floors so that people can spread out. The owners have thought of everything a family or group of friends might want or need, from a great kitchen and large dining table that can easily seat 8 for meals or games, to books, board games, video games and video library, to the kayaks, canoe, life jackets, fishing equipment, two docks, multiple look outs, fire pit and grill. The lake is so clear and so quiet. You are out of cell range and have total peace and quiet, but are only a mile from the nearest store and restaurant. We hiked and kayaked for days. We love this place and absolutely plan to return. Love the owners' art work and crafts outside and throughout the cabin, too, This place is a gem. Thanks for letting us stay.
