About this property

Off Grid Anasazi Wilderness Cabin at Gallina Canyon Rentals

Anasazi Cabin is located within the only twenty mile long gated box canyon in the Chama Wilderness. The cabin includes a completely equipped and carpeted kitchen, living room, and dining area under a 20x30 foot roof. The cabin has cold running spring water, hot-water shower, table, chairs, cooking stove, refrigerator, pots, pans, tableware, propane barbecue, and (if there is not a fire ban in effect) propane fire pit bowl.

The rental is located on the site of an early 1900s Northern New Mexico homestead landmark and is one of three vacation rentals we have in the canyon, with Ranch Wilderness Casita and Remote Wilderness Casita.

Unique at your camp site is a 1,000 gallon soaking pool nestled inside an earthen and rock open-air water storage area which was originally built by the ancient Anasazi Indians, with a breathtaking view of the canyon's 1,700-foot red sand stone walls. The pool is fed with continuously flowing cool spring water.

Gallina Canyon Ranch has been featured in many national and regional magazines, including New Mexico magazine, The Santa Fean, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, and Martha Stewart Living.

On rare days when heavy rain makes the road too muddy to travel, we will take you to the camp and leave with you our mud-friendly truck with tire chains for emergency use.

The specially designed protected play area for your children is at the ranch. You may walk or drive. At the ranch is the community swimming pond, inflatable kayaks, floating trampoline, Slither (a 17-foot water park floating snake on which children can sit, stand, and walk), and a sand box with children's toys. The Gallina River runs right by this area where children love to play in the mud. We supply towels.

As always, Gallina Canyon Rentals is a balm for the world-weary soul
This is my third stay. Twice was in the homey casita, and this time it was "glamping" at the Anasazi. I can convey enough gratitude for sleeping in utter and complete silence and darkness. What a gift. This experience is not for the faint of hear though: if you are someone who cannot sleep without noise, noise machines, and your earbuds in, this is not for you. You are also completely off-grid: no phone, not internet.... HEAVEN! And as always, Elizabeth and Andrew are wonderful hosts. Bless them for their stewardship of this magical place! I can't wait to return next season!

Outstanding experience and spectacular views!
We came across this place by searching Google Maps for accommodation in the Chama area, as a way of breaking our trip and reducing our driving. What we found instead was the highlight of our trip: a truly amazing remote wilderness experience, surrounded by the spectacular canyon landscapes that inspired artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe. Despite being totally off the grid - no electricity supply other than solar power, no water supply other than natural spring water - this campsite has been designed for comfort. There are hot showers, a refrigerator, a full kitchen and patio (all outdoors!), integrated with an immaculately clean camper. Other than the hosts more than 1 mile away, we were the only humans in the canyon. Elizabeth, Andrew, and David were helpful, accommodating, and open. We spent 2 nights here, and regretted that our stay was so short.

It was Heaven
Hello there Elizabeth, Andrew and David: Thanks to you all… we had a marvelous anniversary visit to your most special canyon. We are grateful that you share your place with outsiders. On the day when we crossed all 13 creek crossings, I felt as if we were entering into a scared place and just could not drink it in deeply enough. It was heaven, and we hope to return again to drink it in some more. Special happenings: part way up the arroyo just about 1/10 mi. before Anasazi cabin, I was skulking about when part of the cliff face fell off!!! Whew! I was very happy that I was NOT under it, and thrilled at the sound of the rocks falling, rolling, and the dust settling. Lots of deer, one small bull snake (maybe) and a hawk showing off for us as we drove out of the Chama canyon. And the sego lilies…I’ve never seen so many in so many places. Thanks again, it was all perfect, and Magic has recovered quite well too. Best wishes, Charly, Sam and Magic

Rained Out
Unfortunately , we were not able to stay at the ranch because the rains had washed out the road. Elizabeth communicated very well and we understood the crisis she was experiencing.

About the host

Hosted by Elizabeth and Andrew

Host profile image
Elizabeth is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. Andrew is from Grand Rapids Michigan. In 1977 we bought the homestead complete with cows. We grew specialty organic produce for restaurants in Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque for fifteen years.

David is from the Los Angeles area. He came to the ranch in 2002. He is our caretaker and webmaster.

The ranch is featured in many magazines, such as Martha Stewart, Better Homes and Gardens, Sunset, Gourmet, Saveur, Country Home, Bon Appetit, Wine Spectator, Horticulture, Countryside, Country Living Gardener, Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta, Rocky Mountain Gardening, New Mexico, The Santa Fean, Santa Fe Reporter, The Good Cook, Exotic Beans, Southwest Passages, Fine Cooking, Denver Post, Los Angeles Times, and New York Times.

One of us will check you in and out. If you need anything during your stay, feel free to ask any one of us.

Why they chose this property

We chose this ranch because the beauty and the seclusion of this canyon is unique; it is like having our own mini Grand Canyon--- the same Northern New Mexico beauty that awed and inspired the artist Georgia O'Keeffe.

What makes this property unique

Family Camp includes for your summer enjoyment a 1,000 gallon soaking pool that is continuously fed from a fresh water spring, and includes a table and chairs for use inside the pool. The overflow from the tank attracts a many species of birds, which makes the pool area a bird watcher's dream. The pool is nestled inside an earthen and rock 1900s homestead open-air water storage tank. Mosquitoes are not a problem in Gallina Canyon. With a spectacular view during the day and awe-inspiring panorama of stars at night, the pool area is a great place to enjoy the sights and sound of the canyon. Bring a star map and toast marshmallows we provide over the propane fire pit bowl, then lay back in the provided 'gravity chairs' and watch for meteors streaking across the velvet black sky.

The cabin is the perfect wilderness experience for two families to camp together , corporate get-together, and group camping: please email if you are looking for a group camp site.
