About this property

Lodging at our historic family ranch established in 1889

The lodge has a history of offering lodging to a number of other elite visitors and has previously been an Orvis Endorsesd Fly Fishing Lodge. Today you can enjoy the lodge as your own private home located on a stunning historic ranch that the Wallop family has owned since 1889.

In our own travels, we look for a place to kick off our shoes and breathe deep. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life is yours for the taking if you like. However, if you are seeking a more active stay there are many things within Sheridan County to partake in. To name a few there is both Low Goal and High Goal Polo during the summertime. The Sheridan WYO Rodeo, The Brinton Museum, Just LeDoux It Restaurant in Big Horn and just a short drive away is the charming Cowboy town of Sheridan.

The Big Horn National Forest is only minutes from the Lodge where there is a Trail system that will awe you during your hikes. There are many mountain lakes and streams to fish or to take a sketch book and capture the beautiful mountain images.

There is so much more to our community with too many to list or do justice to the descriptions. Big Horn, Wyoming in Sheridan County is among the most special places on earth.

What a view!
We rented this property to be close to Sheridan and to host our two-year old granddaughter's birthday party. It was perfect. The house had a dining room easily seating 16 even though we only had 8 adults. The kitchen had every gadget and serving piece we needed for a whole week of cooking. The owners were on property and responded quickly to every question. The front porch is to die for along with an everchanging variety of wildlife. The Merchantile in Big Horn has delicious pizza. We waited too long to visit the Brinton Museum nearby, which was closed on Monday and Tuesdays. The downtown area in Sheridan was thriving and great for shopping and dining. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We did enjoy a day trip to Little Big Horn National Park in Montana. We definately recommend this rental.

AMAZING
There is no way to describe the beauty of this place. It's something dreams are made of. You have got to see it for yourself. So peaceful. Grab a cup of coffee in the morning and sit on the porch and just look at the beauty. Also, lots of atv trails in the Bighorns and mountain streams to play in! The owner Sandra and Paul are so humble and truly grateful for what they have. Such wonderful people and so down to earth, so easy to talk to. We are blessed to have met them. We are already planning our next trip back!

A true respite at the foot of the Bighorns
It's hard to convey how relaxing this place was each morning. You look out at the awe-inspiring mountain views from the front porch. Sitting and sipping your coffee. The presence of the horses only made it more idyllic. The lodge was amazing inside with plenty of space for the 5 of us to spread out. And plenty of space for the 5 of use to gather in the kitchen, dining, and common areas. The commercial-grade kitchen was fun to cook in and came equipped with everything you could ever need. The owners were congenial and casual. Greeting us on the evening we arrived. They were easy to communicate with before arrival. We're grateful for being able to stay at such a special place!

Ranch life at it's best
We went for the views and were not disappointed. Add to that the beautiful home with everything you could possibly need or want. Cattle in the pastures, horses and wide open spaces were relaxing and rejuvenating. Sandra checked in on us and was both accomodating and gracious. Thumbs up!

About the host

Hosted by Sandra Wallop

Host profile image
Noll Wallop, the 8th Earl of Portsmouth, purchased Canyon Ranch from Bear Davis in 1889 and since that time the Wallop family has loved and tended to this sacred piece of ground. It is a true blessing that over a century later we are honored to live on the ranch and continue to take care of it.
In the early 20th century Noll and Buffalo Bill had shooting contests at the ranch where the lore tells that Noll out-shot Buffalo Bill. Another famous guest was Theodore Roosevelt who stopped to visit Noll as he was traveling through the Wild West on his quest to preserve America's most beautiful lands. It was during this visit that President Roosevelt determined that the Big Horn Mountains would become designated and protected declaring the area the Big Horn National Forest.
The Wallop family is rich with history in the area and in the State of Wyoming. The stories are numerous and if you are interested in hearing more we'd be happy to share while you are staying at the ranch.

Why they chose this property

Canyon Ranch Lodge sleeps 8 and has 4 bathrooms with an industrial style kitchen that will appeal to the gourmet in your family. The views are stunning and the play in the Big Horn Mountains is even better. Sitting on the porch at the lodge will be permanently etched in your memory whether you are having a rest, reading a book, or dining with your family.
If the Lodge is too large for your party and want something a bit smaller we have the Hay Meadow House which is an elegant family style home and is VRBO listing 569240. Or you may be interested in the Foreman's House which is a charming farm style house and is VRBO listing #814733. Thanks for taking a look around our rentals on the ranch!

What makes this property unique

As the home of the oldest Polo Club in America, the Big Horn Polo Club was started in the early 1900's by the Wallop and Moncrieffe families at the Polo Ranch near Big Horn which is adjacent to Canyon Ranch. The Wallop and Moncrieffe descendants established one of the finest lines of horses that were provided to the Queen of England in her efforts to battle the Boer War. These Wyoming bred and trained horses were prepared for the battlefield through the game of polo assuring the Queen of brave equine soldiers in the field.
Today, a visitor can enjoy a game of polo at the Big Horn Polo Club every weekend during June, July, August, and over Labor Day weekend. World Class Polo has taken hold in Big Horn at the Flying H Polo club at the neighboring ranch where Patrons, their players, and grooms from all over the world play very fast and impressive high goal polo every week during July and August. If you like to golf the Powder Horn Golf Club is a short drive from the ranch offering a highly rated 18 and 27 hole play. Additionally, there is an 18 hole Municipal Golf Course which is further from the ranch. Each Golfing option offers magnificent mountain views.
The Sheridan and Johnson County area has many historic Indian battle sites of the late 19th century. These include Fort Phil Kearny, the Fetterman Masacre, and the Wagon Box Fight. The Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana, the site of Custer's Last Stand, is only about an hour drive from the ranch. The Bradford Brinton Memorial and Western Art Museum is an absolute must see and only minutes from the ranch. King's Museum, adjacent to King's Saddlery in downtown Sheridan, houses an incredible collection of saddles and other Western memorabilia. The Historic Sheridan Inn was the site of auditions for the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. This distinctive 'House of 69 Gables', has house many famous people including Earnest Hemingway.
Canyon Ranch itself has hosted many famous guests of its own over the 120+ years.
