We have the largest rental property in the area with so much to explore on site that it's a destination in itself! Enjoy amazing wildlife out the window, explore and play in the woods and fields, or hike up to panoramic views along our privately-owned trail network - all right out the front door!
Our spacious house with all new furnishings has everything you need for a relaxing stay. We can accommodate a maximum of 8 adults and 2 children. Our king and queen bedrooms have handcrafted Amish furniture and super-soft designer linens, our den/third bedroom has a charming daybed that expands to a queen, and our basement bunk area has rustic bunk beds with down duvets. There is also a queen air bed for kids/extra guests. The master bath has a walk in shower and jacuzzi tub for relaxing after a long hike. Curl up with a good book or watch a movie in our cozy living room with gas fireplace and stunning mountain views. We have a well-equipped cook's kitchen (stainless pans, good knives!) with farm table for 10 and gas grill and patio set on the side deck. There's even a swingset and walkout basement for the kids to run around in, a ping pong table for rainy day distractions, and at night our firepit is perfect for ghost stories and s'mores.
Hop in the car for a scenic ride up to Spruce Knob, one of the highest points in the Mid-Atlantic with endless views. The Monongahela National Forest is our backyard - from a leisurely stroll around the top to an all-day trek, waterfalls, mossy forests, a mountain lake, and incredible scenery await your discovery!
Looking for adventure? A mountain biking paradise, we are minutes from two IMBA Epic rides at Spruce Knob and North Fork. Rock climbers are surrounded by some of the East Coast's best climbing at Seneca Rocks and the via ferrata at Nelson Rocks (and don't miss their new world-class zip line course)! Canoeing, kayaking, and swimming are available on the nearby North Fork. Naturalists will find interpretive displays, video presentations and guided nature walks at the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center just 15 miles down the road.
We're also a perfect place for catching your supper! Fisherman can troll for trout at Spruce Knob Lake or go fly fishing on Seneca Creek or the North Fork River, just down the road. Hunters are within minutes of various access points into the Monongahela National Forest.
Don't miss all the hiking, biking, sledding, and cross-country skiing at scenic Blackwater State Falls Park or the wild blueberries and cranberry bogs at the ecologically unique Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. Be sure to stop in for a little local craft shopping and a bite to eat at one of the many great spots in Thomas and Davis, WV - and catch a live bluegrass show at The Purple Fiddle!
Take the kids for minigolf, gemstone mining, and a cavern tour at nearby Seneca Caverns or Smoke Hole Caverns, or visit the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center with its menu of activities specifically geared to engage the natural curiosity of children. Try a horseback ride to the top of Seneca Rocks or, if you'd like to move a little faster, catch a historic train ride on the Cass Scenic or Durbin & Greenbrier railroads. Explore the mysteries of the universe at the kid-friendly Green Bank Telescope or just gazing up from our deck at the infinite number of stars in the darkest skies on the East Coast - the Milky Way is a regular visitor to our back yard!
In the winter, we are only 38 miles from downhill skiing at Canaan Valley/Timberline resorts and cross country skiing at White Grass Touring Center, and 55 miles from the Mid-Atlantic's best skiing at Snowshoe Mountain Resort.

We're outdoorsy types who grew up climbing trees, riding bikes, and playing in creeks and couldn't believe our luck when we found a 300 acre private park bordering the Monongahela - all within a 3.5 hour drive from DC! Our wonderful co-owner lives up the road and knows every nook and cranny of the area; he'll be available if you need anything.
Danielle purchased this house in 2012
We love to escape the heat of the city and the crowds at Canaan and Timberline to enjoy unimpeded mountain views, cool fresh air, and total peace and quiet. Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks are stunningly beautiful areas that are still kind of secret, and we are one of only a handful of rental properties in this area. Although totally secluded, we are a short drive to several parks, caverns, and ski resorts with endless things to do for adults and children. We are surrounded by the most incredible mountain views and have a totally unique property that reveals new discoveries every time we go out there.
Our property shares 250 acres of common space with our co-owner's house, so we essentially own a large private park in addition to the beautiful lot the house sits on. We've put together a home with handcrafted furniture, thick towels, comfy sofas, and nice kitchen ware because we wanted a place to go where everyone could totally relax and enjoy themselves. We love poking around for newts and frogs in the stream beside the house, listening to the singing of all the rich birdlife, spotting chipmunks and the occasional morel mushroom, and savoring the many colors of the seasons. We've also had fun expanding the trail network on the common space to reveal valley views that rival those from Spruce Knob!
Hi Danielle-
Just wanted to thank you for sharing your home with our family this past weekend. We had a wonderful time together in such a beautiful place. Art was so helpful and kind- he went above and beyond helping us get in and out safely. All of that snow definitely was an experience for these southerners! We loved every minute of it! Looking forward to returning in the future. Thanks again-
This place is the best. The owners are awesome. Perfect for all your needs.
Had a couple little issues, but the property manager was understanding and rectified the situation promptly.
Pros:
Great view, beautiful mountain, and big house.
Cons:
NO cell phone service and wifi was weak. Definitely need a 4x4 in the winter. Over 30 minutes to the grocery store. It's a good 50 to 100 yard walk to the fire pit. That means no music, unless it's downloaded to your phone.
I'd consider returning in the fall to enjoy the trails. But the kids did enjoy playing in the snow.
Second year in a row staying at the Apple Tree Guest House and already planning a third. Wonderful setting and even more beautiful property. We specifically love the master kitchen and large deck that overlooks the mountains. The garage (4 Trucks to be exact) is also a huge plus and made our climbing and biking gear prep easy. We met Art and he was wonderful and happy to have good neighbors. Once again looking forward to next year.
Loved the home. Cozy and spacious at the same time. Everything was organized and as expected
Very private setting and beautiful views! Lovely spot for a weekend getaway
The house itself was really big and could have accommodated at least 10 people, however, it has only 2 big bedrooms with only 2 beds.
It's actually a mansion with a 4 car garage in the middle of scenic mountains. The kitchen is well appointed and a very nice side deck.
The surroundings are something to die for. It scenery is beautiful and we were surrounded by mountains with thick forest. All local attractions to visit are nearby.
Lot's of places to hike and other outdoor activities.
We visited Seneca Rocks, the hike is pretty good. Seneca caverns was also beautiful.
Dolly Sods, U.S. Wilderness Area in the Allegheny Mountains is a must for hikes and mountain views.
The nearest eating and food shops are at least 50 miles away and there is no cell phone service in this area. Make sure to pack lunch and enough drinks when you go out.
So, if you want to get away from it all, then this is the place.
