About Sigurdur Olafsson

We, Þuríður (Thury) and Sigurdur (Siggi) are a married couple for 49 years, have four girls and 9 grandchildren, we are born 1945 and 1949. We are partly retired. Our land property is 140 hectares = 345 acres. We bought the property 17 years ago and started to build a summer cottage. We have now build a living house and are staying here all year round.

Our land is 50% naturally grown woodland of wild Icelandic willow and mountain birch. In the other half we have planted more than 100.000 tree seedlings, mostly Alaska Pine, Alaska Spruce, Siberian Larch, Icelandic birch and Rowan.

Sigurdur Olafsson purchased this cabin in 1995

Why Sigurdur Olafsson chose Iceland

We are very found of our land, in our eyes it is the most beautiful spot in the world. It is sheltered but have great view over a beautiful Icelandic countryside. If we take a walk few hundred meters up on the hill above us we have a panorama view inland and of the two big glaciers in the south; Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull.

What makes this cabin unique

Our property is ideally located if you like to explore south east Iceland. West boundaries of Vatnajökull National Park is only 30 km to the north of us and stretches more than 300 km to the east. Bus stops only few hundred meters away every morning, driving the mountain trail to Eldgjá and Landmannalaugar and comes back same evening. All major attractions in the south east are within 1 1/2 hour drive from us.

Pure Nature

  • 5 of 5

First of all really great location: good point to explore middle and south part of Iceland. In the small cabin we had everything what we needed for our staying surrounded by the pure Nature. Definitely to be recommended for all looking for quite, independent place.

A beautiful and truly special property. We spent two nights here and wish we would have spent more. The south coast is awesome and this cabin is cozy, in a gorgeous area, and well equipped! On our drive out we visited Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, and the beaches at Vik. We arrived at the cabin for a short walk up the hill to the radio tower for a view of the glaciers to the west (recommended by the host). The next day we drove to Skaftafell and summited Kristínartindar (awesome and highly recommended for those that are in shape and strong hikers!) and then drove to the lagoons - it was a long day but worth it! My wife forgot her shoes at the property and the owners where very responsive, went above and beyond, and had their grand-daughter drop them off for us in Reykjavik! Highly recommended! My only recommendation to the host is to provide a bit better directions. They told us the property was 7km off the main road but it is actually closer to or over 8km (I set my trip odometer when we pulled off). Follow the signs to Giljaland and don't let the gate stop you! We were a bit hesitant to open the gate because in some places in the US you could get shot for going on to someone’s property!

Perfect cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I could not have loved our stay in G-22 anymore than we did. The cottage is perfectly designed, with everything you could need. Walking around the farm was beautiful - the land, the river/stream, the church. Thank you, Siggi and Thury, for sharing such a comforting, relaxing place!

Best cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This is the best place we stayed at during our two week trip to Iceland! The location is great if you are looking to visit Landmannalaugar, Fjadrargljufur canyon, Skaftafell Park, and south east area of Iceland. It's has a peaceful feel up on the mountains. Siggi and Thury are very helpful, and you can see the details and love going into the cottage. I would stay here again.

Perfect place for visiting South Iceland

  • 5 of 5

Giljaland is a perfect place for visiting South Iceland's nature, like Maelifell, Lakagigar, Eldgja, the area of Vik,... The property has a very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, the cottage is very well equipped, and Thuridur and Sigurdur made us feel truly welcome. Thank you! We will always remember the amazing sound of the common snipe and look forward to come back again :o)

The most cozy place ever!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Siggi and Þurý, thank you very much! I will recommend this place to all my friends!

This is not just an ordinary cabin - it's a beautiful romantic house, where everything is made with love: there are handmade things and pictures hanging on the wall, candles and other small details, that create a nice atmosphere. Everything is very clean and it smells like wood inside. Down pillows and blankets were warm and convenient. It was never cold inside because it was possible to regulate the heating temperature. If the weather is not very good, there are some good DVDs to watch. Otherwise just grill outside - it's a great experience: you sit at the table and enjoy the fresh air, watch unusual birds, flowers and maybe the host's fawning dog will come to greet you:)

Sigurður and Þurý are very friendly and warmly welcoming people, who are ready to answer all your questions and to help if needed.

We miss Giljaland and we hope to come there again!

Best wishes,

Elena and Philipp
