About Doug Mendel
Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.
Doug Mendel purchased this Bungalow in 2003
Why Doug Mendel chose Pigeon Point
When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.
What makes this Bungalow unique
We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and way of life. Magpie sits within the heart of it all.

Sweet Cottage in Beaufort
This cottage is open and airy and so clean and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay. There were plenty of towels and the beds were very comfortable. We would stay again! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home.
We stayed at Magpie Cottage for six weeks. We had such a wonderful vacation. The house is adorable and has everything you could want for a beach vacation. Our family rode our bikes everywhere. You can easily walk to restaurants and shopping. We made friends with people in the neighborhood on our daily walks. We also walked down to the water at dusk to see the dolphins. The neighborhood has a great park for kids. The house also has lots of games for family time as well as great summer books to read.
The National Cemetery is right across the street which is so quiet and beautiful.
The owners of the home are wonderful and very accommodating. We truly did not want to leave.
We had the best mother’s day weekend at Magpie Cottage. Wonderful location, charming, comfortable, clean & family friendly. Doug was great and provided so many fabulous recommendations for things to do in the area.
What a great, central location!
We were in Beaufort for my son's college graduation, and this house was the perfect headquarters! The kitchen is well stocked, and the beds were comfortable!
A great little place for the family near Parris Island or just for vacation
We were picking up our Marine graduate at PI and needed a dog friendly place with fenced yard and large enough and nice enough for us and our son's girlfriend. We really enjoyed this house, nice linens, comfortable mattresses, recently remodeled into large spacious home in pristine shape. It was close to everything and you could walk downtown or to restaurants. It was affordable and we enjoyed the home. Totally clean!! Kitchen well stocked, and on a quiet street on only a 15-20 min drive to PI. (There are two ways to go, one much easier). I recommend highly.
Very comfortable and easy to access all that we needed while in Beaufort
