About Doug Mendel

Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.

Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003

Why Doug Mendel chose Beaufort

We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and way of life.

What makes this bungalow unique

When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.

In the heart of the Lowcountry, Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the inner Sea Islands of South Carolina.

Beaufort is renowned for its scenic location and its unspoiled historic character through the preservation of its unique antebellum architecture and the region’s vibrant and still evolving history.

Beaufort is home to some of the country’s best outdoor sports, beaches, antiques and shopping and is known for its military establishments, particularly its close proximity to Parris Island, the U.S. Naval Hospital, and the Marine Corps Air Station.

Beaufort’s downtown is full of restaurants, art galleries, antique shops and more – all tucked into its beautiful waterfront. More shopping and sight-seeing can be had at Hilton Head which is about 45 minutes south; Savannah, about an hour south, and Charleston, about an hour and a half north - all close enough for day trips.

For outdoor lovers, the ACE Basin area is a paradise; activities include beaches and golf, hunting, fishing, boating, bird watching, hiking, bicycling, and all types of nature study.

Enjoyable stay

  • 5 of 5

Nice and quiet location. The cottage is close to Parris Island and worked well for the Marine graduation we were attending. The cottage is cute and well maintained. We enjoyed the enclosed portion of the porch. The beach chairs and cooler came in handy for a day at the beach. We also enjoyed Beaufort’s water front area, a sunrise nearby at pigeon point boat launch, and an evening at the water festival. The owners kindly called us the evening of our arrival to verify we made it and everything was in working order. We would gladly stay here again in the future.

Perfect Lil' Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Was perfect for my short visit to Beaufort. I've told everyone about it and encouraged them to look you up should they ever need somewhere quiet and nice to stay. Everything was close by and even though the traffic is a bit hectic with the construction, it was still fairly easy to navigate.

A great place for Parris Island graduation

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Magpie cottage for our nephews graduation on Parris Island and it was perfect. While we didn't use it all that much since the days were spent on Parris Island, the time we did gave our family of 5 a perfect retreat and a place to unwind. The owners were super nice and helped us with any questions we had including recommendations for things do. We opted to stay in our final night and grill on the deck on their new gas grill. Close to everything and 15-20 minute drive to Parris Island. Thanks for everything!

Relaxing, Interestig, Eclectic, Convenient

  • 5 of 5

Myself and my fur baby and boyfriend who lives in a nearby community stayed here just to have down time, visit with some family and check out Beaufort a little. What an engaging home this is. Very centrally and peacefully located with a comforting view across the street from the side border of the National Cemetery. Lovely landscaped yard front and back brings though right at the main street and in a neighborhood a very tranquil Low Country feel. The place is spacious, well maintained, clean and not apparent by any means that it also has furry guests. All the extra amenities needed to come in and be at home or on the go such as cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, linens, spices, cookware, recreation items, gas grill, even bikes though we did not use these. The house furnishings with many antiques and art are awesome atmosphere sharing the energy of what historical Beaufort and the Low Country have to give. Found the owners very responsive on both reserving the property and on an issue to remedy while there. A fenced in yard is a plus, the patios out back, the cleanliness upon arrival, the screened porch with beautiful views of the trees, great art all through the house really enjoyable for artistic and creative folks I just loved that added bonus.... I hope to have the chance to return to Magpie Cottage in the near future. I in recent years have rented often while traveling and this is top notch. Thank you for your home to share in.

Charming and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time that we've stayed at Magpie Cottage, and as before we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The house is beautifully furnished and extremely comfortable, and the owners extremely welcoming. Doug's list of things to do in Beaufort gave us plenty of ideas for both great restaurants and fun activities for the whole family. We definitely recommend Magpie for anyone staying in the area!

  • 5 of 5

Family truly enjoyed our stay in Beaufort which was enhanced by this wonderful cottage located within walking distance to downtown. Cottage was fully self sufficient with everything we needed and was decorated wonderfully. Would recommend a visit to the Beaufort area and if you make the trip look at the Magpie Cottage for a pleasant stay.
