About Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff
We built our dream vacation home to share with family and friends in 2001. As South Dakota natives, we have roots in the Black Hills (Sturgis and Rapid City), but live in eastern SD, near Mitchell. Our family (children & grandchildren) have created many memories in this cabin...and we hope you'll create your own family treasures. May your time here strengthen the bonds of friend and family, and bless you with rest and relaxation.

Why Mark or Margaret VanDerWerff chose Lead
We love the Black Hills...as an active outdoor family, the decision to have a home on Terry Peak was an easy one. We do it all: including skiing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, hiking, sledding, fishing, golfing...the list is pretty long, actually. For all these reasons and more, we love our cabin in the Hills.
What makes this Cabin unique
This cabin is set apart because of its unique floor plan. We saw a lot of cabins before we decided on this special property. With 3 bedrooms on separate floors (and each with its own full bathroom) we can give our guests and family the private space (and quiet) that they deserve when vacationing. We also have a private lot, with no neighbors on 3 sides. Love that!

Great Christmas Retreat
Margaret and Mark were wonderful hosts. They were very responsive to our questions and concerns. We joined two other families for a ski Christmas. The place was more spacious than we had expected and had everything we needed in the kitchen to prepare a prime rib Christmas dinner. The hot tub was wonderful and beds were comfortable. Half of us had skis that we kept in our cars overnight. When we weren’t skiing, we sledded with the kids out back. I suspect there were more sledding options nearby, but we stayed at the cabin and had a blast. The snow was up to our thighs (Terry Peak had a 14-20” base) and you definitely got a workout walking thru it. We didn’t have toddlers, but I noticed they had a highchair and sippy cups. The cabin would be wonderful in the summer with the beautiful views from the decks. It definitely felt warm and cozy just like a second home.
Awesome Cabin at a great location!
Had an awesome time! The location was perfect for lots of fun outdoor activities. Cabin was clean upon arrival and the owners did a great job communicating! Will definitely return!
Great place to offroad from.
We had 4 couples that travel 1200mi to offroad the Blackhills. The location was great to ride out from, being able to ride on highways to get to the trails. The cabin was very comfortable and relaxing after a day of riding. Everyone in our group loved the experience. Owners were very helpful during the process with details, and having everything provide.
Lovely place! Would stay there again!
Thank you for writing such a nice review. And thank you for staying with us!! Please come again.
Awesome stay! This was the perfect house for myself and my friends to stay. Plenty of room for all of us. Perfect location to stay away from all the rally craziness. I would definitely recommend staying here.
Thanks for your kind view. Please come again.
This was a great cabin and location for our family vacation. everybody had room and everyone enjoyed themselves and even a couple of the grandkids cried when we left
Staying in the Northern Black Hills offers a wide variety of choices for your vacation. The area boasts fabulous winter sports venues; skiing, snowmobiling, tubing. Hiking, fishing, golfing, sight seeing are just a few of summers treats. Black Hills Trail systems for power vehicles or bicycling the Michelson Trail are less than 5 miles from the front door. Relive the mining era, the days of the gunslingers, and old west cowboys and saloon girls in historic Deadwood and Lead (less than 10 miles). Gaming, fine dining and entertainment abound. Sturgis is a short 20 miles down the canyon, home of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Expand your drive to the southern Hills and see our famous Faces, Mt Rushmore; an easy scenic drive (40 miles). Find Custer State park which features Buffalo, Deer, Elk, Mountain Goats, and Donkeys. A week isn't time enough to explore this beautiful play ground.
