About Kaylyn Thornal

I fell in love with Rockland, Maine when I moved there for the film program at the Maine Photographic Workshops in 1998. I am now a Television Producer and Editor living in Los Angeles, but I still try to make it back every year at least for a week to unwind. There is nothing like Maine in the summer. Then again, there is nothing like Maine in the fall. When I'm there I feel euphoric and energized and alive with creativity. I love to walk downtown to the galleries, cafe's and at night to the restaurants. The whole town has exploded the last 10 years and the community is a nice mix of locals and transplants, who like me, fell in love with Maine and couldn't seem to not be there. They are locals who own and run the shops, lobster fishermen and women, and artists. The people are friendly and welcoming. Rockland is different than Camden and Rockport which you will immediately notice. Those are both nice towns, but Rockland has a soul to it that is hard to find in many places. While those towns are charming and quaint, Rockland is energetic, alive and engaging.

2017 will be the 5th year we are renting the house as a seasonal and hope it brings you memories you'll have the rest of your life. Just as it has mine.

Thank you for your interest.

Why Kaylyn Thornal chose Rockland

I knew I wanted to buy this house the moment I drove east down Linden street toward the ocean. As the car rolled closer toward Pacific Street, the lighthouse slowly creeped over the horizon. It was magical.

What makes this house unique

During a fog or rain, the Rockland and Owl's Head lighthouse sing to each other. One calls, the other answers with these deep tonal horns. You have to hear it to understand, but if you ever do you will get it immediately. It's like music.

Wifi, board games, leave your car in the drive and walk to restaurants & bars, museums, beach, harbor, all festivals.

Convenient, adorable cottage for family stay in Rockland!

  • 5 of 5

We traveled to Rockland with our three children. The cottage was perfectly situated for us to do day trips all around the region, and stroll into town and enjoy Rockland. Our children, ages 5, 8 and 9, loved the cottage itself and the yard. It's a quiet neighborhood. The caretaker, Louise, made sure the kids had an extra-special time in Maine! Kaylyn was easy to reach in the booking process, and in communicating our delayed arrival (we were arriving later at night unexpectedly). The owners made sure to have a wonderful binder of information about the area and fabulous places to visit available in the kitchen upon arrival. Although there is only one bathroom, we did not find this to be a problem - even with a family of five. The kitchen had everything you could need to prepare simple meals at home. I highly recommend it!

The Pacific House was everything the description said it would be. We weren't missing anything. We truly enjoyed our stay, from where we layed our heads to all our daytime activities. We hope to stay again!

Charming, comfortable family house

  • 5 of 5

We (family of 5) spent 4 nights at this spotlessly clean house in July. This pretty property was spotlessly clean, full of character and very comfortable. It's location is great, in a peaceful street, with the bay just at the end of the street and then an easy stroll along the boardwalk into Rockland. We loved the area too - there's plenty to do in pretty Rockland from the art gallery, with its excellent Andrew Wyeth exhibition to walking the breakwater to admire the lighthouse and scenery. We enjoyed exploring the stunning Penobscot Bay Area, a highlight being a trip up Mount Battie in Camden Hill State Park, which has views to take your breath away! Booking the property was easy & all queries were promptly responded to. Louise (property manager) was on hand locally, offering a friendly welcome and help if needed. If we were ever back in the area, we'd happily stay here again.

A jumping-off point for ferries bound for the mid-coast islands, the harbor town of Rockland rocks the mainland in its own right. From its mid-summer Lobster Festival to the Farnsworth Art Museum, from the North Atlantic Blues Festival to windjamming, the fishing, island-hopping and culture provide as much of a draw to this region as the great outdoors.

Start your mornings off right with a stroll down to local roaster Rock City Roasters or it's sister restaurant Rock City Cafe. Rock City roasts their own coffee so you can enjoy a cup of java and some of the best pastries in town while reading the morning paper. For dinner, try Primo—in a renovated 1880s Victorian home—which plans its menu around what’s in the garden and on the farm, and laces desserts with honey from its own bees, or get your dance on to some of the best blues around at the Time Out Pub.

National Georgraphic named Rockland, Maine one of the Top 100 adventure towns in America. Begin with a Rockland Harbor Kayak Tour, great for seal and puffin sighting. Then venture to the Maine Lighthouse Museum, after soaking up the facts, legends, and lore, put on your walking shoes for the nearly one mile walk across the Rockland Breakwater to the Lighthouse. Hop a ferry from the Rockland terminal to nearby Vinalhaven and North Haven Islands which are are great day trips. Ferries are also the least expensive way to see the coast from the water.

About half of the Maine Windjammer Association fleet is now based in Rockland. Book a windjammer cruise. Best vantage points for viewing and photographing windjammers sailing in and around Rockland Harbor are the Rockland Breakwater and Owls Head Light house.

Rockland could be considered Maine's most art-centric town, thanks to the Farnsworth Museum and Wyeth Center (home to work of three generations of Wyeths - NC, Andrew, and James) as well as and the galaxy of independent galleries that surround it. Take it all in on the monthly First Friday Art Walk. Catch a concert, lecture, performance, or film at the Strand, a beautifully restored 1923 theater downtown.

When it comes to food, Rockland has some of the best restaurants in the Mid-Coast and maybe all of Maine. Start with two James Beard award winners: Melissa Kelly, who owns Primo, a farm to table restaurant on the southern edge of town, (be sure to tour the gardens and animal pens before dining in the restaurant or upstairs lounges), and Waterman’s Beach Lobster, named an American Classic. Stroll down Main Street, and the possibilities include the region’s best Japanese, Suzuki’s Sushi Bar; best wine & tapas, In Good Company, or a for more eclectic menu try Cafe Miranda. Or head down to the harbor's edge to Conte's Italian/Seafood - as seen on Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations - this meal will be an adventure in itself! Indulge in breakfast at Home Kitchen Cafe, The Brown Bag, or Brass Compass. For a local brew and fresh fried haddock sandwich, head to the Waterworks on Lindsay St.

If you're looking for a great place to base your Maine vacation, look no further than centrally located and eclectic Rockland, Maine on the water!
