About Whitney Wigren

My wife, Whitney, and I, KC, are both born and raised Alaskans. We appropriately met while playing on the same hockey team at 9 years old; thirteen years later, we tied the knot. Just months after marrying we purchased the homestead from my wife’s great aunt and uncle’s estate to keep it in the family. My wife works for the Alaska Air National Guard and has been attending training in the “lower 48” (as we Alaskans call the continental United States) hence why we’ve decided to open our home to Alaska’s great travelers.

Whitney Wigren purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Whitney Wigren chose Eagle River

Built in 1952 by my wife’s great uncle, Smoky, this log home was an original homestead of east Eagle River, AK. Originally allotted 160 acres, Smoky sold the land over the years down to the remaining 3.5 acre property my wife and I now own today. This property will provide you a glimpse of how the old timers lived before Alaska's infrastructure was developed.

Rustic cabin with gorgeous views

  • 4 of 5

This is a remodeled, rustic cabin about a 40 minute drive from the Anchorage airport. The mountain views are glorious. The hosts were fantastic, not only in addressing our concerns but also in showing genuine caring. Because my husband is tall, it was a problem that the master bed had a queen-size frame but only a standard mattress. Also cleanliness was not up to par initially.

Rapid City

Amazing close to town location.

  • 4 of 5

The location was excellent. Floor plan and kitchen were invaluable. Views were incredible as was the privacy. All was great. The only negative was the house keeping. Lots of dust in the bedroom floors. Yes I would recommend to all. Marvelous stay!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review, we appreciate your business and taking time to write a review. My apologies about the housekeeping - we recently hired a new cleaning company and it is apparent after two complaints it is not up to standard. Over the five years we've ran our vocational rental, this is the first summer we've had dissatisfaction, we will remedy the situation immediately!

Older cabin with charm

  • 3 of 5

The cabin is much older than the pictures show, but still carries an immense amount of charm. The view from the cabin is spectacular if you are lucky enough to get a clear day. One thing that we found unsettling was when we pulled into the driveway and started to unpack the car, a drone came up over the ledge and appeared to be recording us. Not sure who was driving the drone or why, but that was an unwelcomed site to say the least. Also, the cabin was not as clean as we would have hoped.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words and your business, we appreciate it! Our home is an original Alaskan homestead built in 1952, it is a 65 year old relic that we hold dear to our heart. However, we have made several modern upgrades, most recently a 15k bathroom remodel this past spring; we're sorry if you felt the pictures weren't accurate, we hired a professional photographer to accurately portray the home and also included the fact that it is an original homestead on our VRBO listing. In regards to housekeeping, we had one other complaint from another guest this season, we hired a new cleaning company this summer and we have since made other arrangements; in our five years of operating, we've never have had complaints about cleanliness and will make the appropriate changes immediately. In regards to the drone incident, unfortunately there is nothing we can do. This is the first incident and have no idea who was operating it. I would suggest in the future to call the authorities if you feel your safety and privacy is at risk.
