Overview

Photos and Description of this Giarre holiday cottage

Lava rock farmhouse among vineyards, cherry trees and a wooded valley, wifi

Casa Rosa is a renovated farmhouse amidst a beautiful natural environment: 2 hectares of vineyards, cherry trees and a wooded valley ideal for your summer picnic. On one side you can admire the Mount Etna and on the other side the coast: a landscape of 150 km that stretches until Taormina, the coast of Calabria in the far north and the province of Syracuse in the south.

The ground floor has a living room with fireplace, sofa and dining table, kitchen, bathroom with toilet, bidet and shower, a double bedroom with a large double bed. In the attic there is a bedroom with large double bed, a terrace and a large bedroom with large double bed and two single beds. There is also a bathroom with toilet, bidet and shower. The garden is equipped with garden furniture including parasol and beach chairs, barbecue and various toys for children. The fireplace also supplies the central heating which makes Casa Rosa also suitable for a winter holiday. There is wifi internet.

The area: Casa Rosa is an excellent base from which to explore eastern Sicily. The village lies halfway between Catania and Taormina and just 15 kilometres from Acireale (a pretty little city, built on a plateau of lava, that is known for its Baroque churches). Giardini Naxos, a seaside resort with a sandy beach, is just 25 km from Casa Rosa (15 minutes with the highway). Next to Giardini Naxos we find Taormina 'the pearl of the Mediterranean' and the most exclusive seaside resort in Sicily. Its ancient Greek theatre is world famous for its extraordinary panoramic views. Pozzillo, Santa Maria la Scala are Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Zafferana Etnea. The nearest can be found in Praiola (9 km), a wild pebbled beach next to an impressive cliff. Travelling south, one hour’s drive away lies Syracuse.

Mount Etna: Casa Rosa is also an excellent base from which to explore Mount Etna and its surroundings. The villages of Etna, such as Trecastagni, Zafferana Etnea and Randazzo, are famous for their ancient lava flows, the architecture of their seventeenth century churches, their delicious local produce and the hospitality of the villagers. Situated about 600 metres above sea level, they are a favourite retreat of the city dwellers who, in summer are in search of cool, fresh air, while in winter are in search of snow for skiing. Few people are aware that Etna is a popular location for skiers in winter. On some glorious days in winter, it’s even possible to ski the frozen slopes in the morning enjoying a wonderful panoramic view of the Mediterranean, and then, the same afternoon, go and sunbathe on the beaches below!

Nice and quiet farmhouse with great panorama

  • 4 of 5

Ernesto is a great host, available and helpful. In a quiet neighbourhood, the farmhouse is nice and has great surrounding garden and terrific panorama over Etna and sea coast. Outside breakfast and coffee time areas are also very cute & kitchen has everything you would need. The relatively difficult access road is more than balanced by all described advantages of the property. Everything needed you can buy in the 2 vicinity villages.

The perfect italian experience!!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4, with a 5 and a 9 years old. We were looking for a place with plenty of space for the kids to play and run freely without bothering anyone, a place with a view and a place where we could just relax listening to just the sounds of nature. Ernesto's house had all that and more! It was just perfect! And beautiful since we got there in time to see all the cherry trees in full bloom. The house itself is very comfortable and my husband enjoyed very much getting in touch with his inner manhood via lightening the fire every night, thought the house was warm enough without it. We made barbecues and breakfasted looking at the sea. There is wi-fi, so the kids were also entertained in between our trips around the east side of Sicily (the west coast is too far away for day trips) and after exploring the different paths that run around the house itself. Mount Etna was practically just behind us and Ernesto gave us some tips to save up on expensive pre-arranged tours up there. He also provided a feast of locally produced tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, olives and wine on our first day, which was just great. We couldn't recommend the place enough. It truly is an Italian experience, far from other tourists and boring hotels with overcrowed pools. Even the (very) bumpy and narrow road that takes you to the house was quite an experience - just don't hire a big car!

A wonderful house in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

For us the house lived up to all the other 5 star reviews. In winter, when the clouds lift to reveal it, the summit of Etna looming behind the house is an imposing sight whilst the Ionian sea in front of the house is constantly changing colour as the light shifts. The house has been renovated to the highest standard. It has lovely artisan terracotta tiles and cherry wood beams and floors. All the furniture and fittings have been chosen and fitted with great skill and care. Everything is totally in keeping with a Sicilian farmhouse. The only sounds floating up from the plain below the house are those of church bells from the nearest villages. Nearer to the house, dogs, cockerels and the tinkling of sheep bells; lovely country sounds against a back drop of peace and tranquility.

Tending the fire in winter is something of a hobby. In winter you can be nice and warm in front of the fire but the heating only takes the chill off the rest of the house. As long as you're prepared to wear a few layers it's fine. The welcome from Ernesto was as others have described. He is extremely helpful and nice. The fire was lit to welcome us when we arrived, along with wine, olive oil and other essentials.

Nervous drivers should note that the road to the house is narrow and made of rough stones. If you're heading to destinations along the coast use the A18 toll road to go North / south and then drop down to your destination. Much of the coast road is busy and built up and driving along it is slow and stressful.

Any one who who enjoys peace, beautiful surroundings and views will love this house. It is also very well placed for getting to see the Etna national park and the coast. The two nearest settlements Zafferana and Milo are both charming places and Zafferna has very good supermarkets.

A beautiful old farmhouse in Sicily!!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Ernesto's farm house was very pleasant.. The pictures does not do it justice. It is filled with good spirits. The kitchen is well equipped for producing good meals. Upon our arrival we were welcomed with wine (made by Ernesto) fresh cheeses, bread, olive oil (made by Ernesto) a basket of tomatoes, peppers,Sicilian lemons, lettuce, grapes, and apples. The views from the yard both day and night are truly beautiful.. I would highly recommend staying at this farmhouse.. Thank you Ernesto for your warm hospitality. Deborah and Lawrence Maissen

Excellent in every way.

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly what we wanted in terms of location, cleanliness, equipment and facilities. The track was a bit rougher than expected so it was a good job we had a hire car! We net the owner who was delightful and full of information and local knowledge. We would recommend Casa Rosa to anyone.

Spectacular location, thoughtful owner

  • 5 of 5

We didn't have the best weather for our stay, but when the sun was shining, the views - up towards the summit of Etna, down towards the sea - were lovely. Ernesto the owner had thoughtfully supplied provisions, including two bottles of very high quality wine from his own vineyard, to see us through the first twenty-four hours. Whenever we had a query, he was ready to response - either by phone or through a hands-on demonstration. The wood-fired central heating system took a little getting used to, but worked fine once we understood its subtleties. Ditto the wi-fi. The house was clean and the children enjoyed exploring its nook and crannies, and those of the broader property. We managed day-trips to Catania, Agrigento, Taormina, Castiglione di Sicilia and Syracuse, though the weather meant that the road up to the top of Etna was closed. We had a marvellous lunch in the restaurant at the Hotel Federico II in Castiglione di Sicilia.

Car: recommended

On one side you see the Mount Etna but on the other side the view of the coast is a truly unique show: a landscape of 150 km until Taormina, the coast of Calabria in the far north and the province of Syracuse in the south. Equally beautiful is the profile of the ancient craters on the horizon and the picturesque terraced hills nearby where Sicilian shepherds graze their sheep. A road (partly unpaved) leads from Zafferana Etnea to the pink house, built from lava rock. Casa Rosa is located about 500 meters above the sea level and is a good base for excursions to Mount Etna, to the villages of Milo, Zafferana and Trecastagni, but also to the mundane Taormina, Giardini Naxos and the tourist city of Catania which is only an half hour drive away (25 km). Pozzillo, Santa Maria la Scala and Aci Trezza are pleasant seaside villages near Casa Rosa. The nearest beach can be found in Praiola (9 km), a wild pebbled beach next to an impressive cliff.
