Overview

About the property

Charming 1+ bedroom, 1 bathroom, 750' apt. in the heart of marvelous Uptown Mpls

Welcome to the vibrant, diverse Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis! Located just a few blocks from Lake Calhoun, Lake & Hennepin and Lyn-Lake shopping districts, this charming, non-smoking apartment (located within our duplex home; a 'shotgun' apartment completely self-contained with a separate entrance) is available for rent year round.

Please note that we welcome guests of all ages, nationalities, races, religions (or lack thereof), languages and sexual orientation. No discrimination here, no profiling - just a warm welcome to all!

Relax in the cozy living room, complete with beautiful gas fireplace (especially nice in winter), plenty of books and board games, eclectic original art, and a small flat-screen television (network channels plus very basic cable; nothing fancy!). Wifi throughout for your streaming and internet needs. There's a personalized neighborhood guide with lots of restaurant recommendations in the dining room, and we are happy to recommend shops, family adventures, theaters and other attractions.

The apartment, which comprises the right half of the main floor of our duplex home, features one full bedroom, a fold-down queen futon couch in the living room and a second fold-down queen futon couch in the sitting/dining room. The serene bedroom features a queen-size bed with new mattress and memory foam topper, overhead fan, 100% cotton sheets and quilts and towels, and plenty of extra pillows, including new memory foam pillows if you prefer them.

The sitting/dining room contains a dining nook (seating for four), a children's corner with toys and books, an overhead fan and a fold-down queen-size futon couch. Brand-new handheld remote-controlled heat, air conditioning and dehumidifier provide instant comfort throughout the apartment no matter the season.

The kitchen is fully supplied with pots and pans, dishes, rice cooker, a full-sized refrigerator and gas stove/oven, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster and utensils. (No dishwasher.) Please note that the kitchen photos are out of date, as we recently replastered and repainted the walls, repainted the cabinets, and refinished the underlying hardwood floor.

The bathroom, while small, contains both tub and shower and a new sink. The apartment has two closets and plenty of drawer space. A hairdryer and plenty of supplies --soap, toilet paper, a first aid kit-- are provided.

On-street parking is almost always available in front of the house, and flower gardens surround both the house and the boulevard in season. The Uptown and Lyn-Lake neighborhoods are renowned for their wide variety of restaurants, theaters, movies, shopping (both small indie shops and national branches), grocery stores both upscale and midscale, bars, music and people-watching.

Do you like the great outdoors? You'll be in heaven. Bike trails, walking and running paths, sailing, canoe, kayak, paddleboarding, cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, swimming and no fewer than ten gyms and yoga studios are all located within a few blocks.

We are located three blocks in all directions from multiple bus lines, allowing quick access anywhere you wish to go in the metro area.

Minneapolis is a beautiful city year-round, and we invite you to come enjoy it in all seasons. We love sharing our neighborhood with others and would be happy to help you with any questions you might have.

About The Owner

I am a writer who thrives on the freedom to work wherever I am. What do I love? Travel. Reading. Family and friends. Lively conversation. The great outdoors. Movies, both indie and b-grade blockbusters. Food, lots of it and well-made. Music, music, music and books, books, books. As your host, I will be completely unobtrusive (I myself dislike the hovering host syndrome) but happily available should you need directions, restaurant/shopping recommendations, or walking and biking and running and gym tips. If I'm in a baking mood you might find a basket of cookies hanging from your door.

Why The Owner chose Calhoun Isles

I've lived in the Uptown neighborhood ever since I moved to Minneapolis (from New England) many years ago, and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else in the city. It's a charming, quirky, unique area in which you can walk and bike or bus anywhere you need to go. I love living in a quiet residential neighborhood three blocks from all the hustle and bustle of Uptown's commercial district.

What makes this apartment unique

I fell in love with our duplex the first moment I looked at it. It's a vintage home with beautiful woodwork everywhere, from gleaming hardwood floors to intricately carved moldings. The gas fireplace, the sunny kitchen and dining room, and the charming front porch (complete with swing) make it a wonderful place year-round.

Cozy apartment in Uptown

  • 5 of 5

Enough space for three adults, very warm in cold month of January, gas fireplace is nice, kitchen was stocked, plenty of towels and bedding, vintage charm, within short driving distance of museums, easy to find street parking.

Cozy Place

  • 4 of 5

Walking in, I immediately felt at home! Books abound and there are games galore. Alison communicated early and clearly on how to get in. She lives next door, but was not invasive at all. She has stocked the place with kid friendly games, books and gear. The wine, cheese, crackers and homemade sweets waiting for us made us feel welcome.

Two issues to be aware of: the front room (with fireplace) goes immediately into the main bedroom, which then leads to the minute hallway with the bathroom, then onto the dining area with a futon and then to the kitchen-one long row of rooms. This can be tricky when you have other people staying with you who need to use the bathroom or you want early access to the kitchen. The second issue is there is no way to control the temperature of the unit. We stayed here during below zero temps and had expected to be chilly in this older home. The kitchen was a bit drafty by the window, but the bedroom was a bit too warm for our comfort.

It is wonderfully close to the Uptown shops, restaurants and bars along with Lake Calhoun. Alison has a wonderful write up on her favorite places.

Charming bungalow perfect for walking to the lake and restaurants

  • 5 of 5

This is such a lovely apartment with so many amenities and so much space. We loved the front porch swing, the flower garden, the different living and sleeping spaces, and the historic charm. We felt like we were visiting a home instead of a rental.

The neighborhood was even better than expected with the Lake Calhoun trail a few blocks away and so many restaurants in walking distance that we were bummed we could not eat at of them. The home is just far enough away from the busier streets that it is very quiet and peaceful.

Alison is a wonderful host. She has decorated the apartment with so much character and charm, I wish we had had more time to just sit and read her books. She even welcomed us with a lovely bottle of wine, complete with cheese and crackers. So thoughtful.

I"m very appreciative of her recommendations for restaurants - there is an overabundance of deliciousness a short stroll down the street.

I'm hoping I get a chance to return to Minneapolis and stay here.

Vintage charm

  • 5 of 5

When I was a kid, I lived in this kind of house. We came to celebrate an anniversary and watch a couple of ballgames. Rather than stay in our usual hotel type, someone suggested Uptown. Uptown is known for its nightlife. Nightlife for us is "a good nights sleep ", which we got. The area around us was quiet, but the nightlife is just blocks away, if that's what you want.

We took the bus to Target Field-took 15 minutes; didn't have to worry about parking. We where probably home while people where still getting out of the parking lot. And our team won both games! Bonus!

We also rented Nice Bikes, and went for a nice ride around Calhoun Lake. I was a bit nervous, since I hadn't ridden in a few years. It was easy with lots of bike lanes everywhere.

The house was great.

The instruction booklet was well laid out. Very helpful.

We made our own breakfasts and lunches. That kitchen is well supplied. It might have been nice to have had access to a BBQ

Vintage but clean, with a good bed.

The front yard is full of perennials. They share the space with the weeds. I like a more manicured yard, but that's a lot of work. It did give the property its own style.

Owner's Response: Dear Marlene, We're so glad you loved your stay in Uptown, and that you made the most of it - Nice Rides, the lakes, Target Field, and relaxing at home. We're lucky to live in such a quiet residential neighborhood only blocks from the hustle and bustle. Thanks for the BBQ tip; we'll add a simple Weber grill to the side of the porch for future visits. We loved hosting you and your husband and we hope you keep us in mind for future visits! Cheers, Alison

Delightful cozy apartment perfect for my visit for a friend's wedding.

  • 5 of 5

From the welcoming wine & cheese to the attractive decor & fascinating pictures on the walls to the well stocked book shelves for all ages - I fell in love with this place. The gas fireplace in the living room may be my favorite feature. The apartment was pleasantly just warm enough ( that is - it wasn't too hot) for my December visit, but relaxing by the fire after all the wedding related events I was attending just added to my delight.

The Owner has a detailed guide to the apartment and pages of local places for coffee, food & fun. There are all kinds of local guides & guidebooks. This is a great location close to Lake Calhoun & some good shopping areas & I only wish I had more time on this visit to do some exploring.

An extra treat are the books written by the Owner/Author which I found on the bookshelves. The ones I found were mainly children's & middle-school books which I found delightful & moving. And - there are all sorts of toys for kids.

The kitchen is well stocked & only needs your groceries. And I had much better showers here than at home!!

I highly recommend this place!

Lovely quiet spot perfect for families with young children near the heart of uptown

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is everything it's advertised to be - not modern nor fancy but very functional. Know that there is not central air but a few AC units in the apartment for those hot & humid days so for light sleepers like me, the constant on and off of the AC was slightly disruptive. However, I cannot complain as Alison was more than accommodating for the needs for our toddler and surprised us with a signed copy of one of the children's books she wrote! She even printed my matron of honor speech at her home for us. We were very happy staying there, it was great to have our own kitchen and the kids toys and accoutrements were a huge bonus for us.
