Furnished with great taste, this spacious apartment has parquet-like tiled floors, 2 foyers, dining room, 2 lounges, full kitchen, 2 bedrooms- 1 queen bed with en-suite. A second bedroom with two single beds and a second bathroom. Heating and air conditioning, sheets and towels are included, as is a welcome gift.
The kitchen is fully furnished and includes a coffee machine, rice cooker, sandwich maker, modern appliances and gas oven and hotplates. There is a dish washer. The glass dining table seats up to 8 people comfortably and table cloths and place mats are provided. There is a washing machine and dryer, iron and ironing board. A hair dryer is located in the bathroom drawer under the sink. Shampoos and soaps are provided in each bathroom.
French television channels are available and Chromecast to which you can link you telephone/ipad/computer to access Netflix/Plex/Youtube/BBC iplayer etc. You can also connect to or the Filmon app to access English channels. Details for connecting to the Chromecast device and operation of the television are provided upon booking as are instructions for its use, along with other useful details regarding the apartment.
The apartment looks onto a central courtyard which is a shared space for residents. This has limited parking for residents, including your own parking space.
There are 3 buildings that make up the complex, traditionally called a hotel particulier. The building is approximately 150 years old. It remained a single house until it was broken up into apartments. The entrance tunnel was originally the rear of the house and entry point for the horse and carriage. The house is listed and protected.
The train station is a short walk away and has direct lines to Toulouse and Narbonne.
You can also catch the Petit Train and Aglo which takes you around the Bastide (old central walled city where the apartment is located) and Le Cite (castle surrounds).
Taxi Service - they are not very good at taking bookings in advance so call when you need one and they will be here in 5 minutes unless they are busy. Many of the drivers speak enough English to help you out if you need it.
Places of Interest – Carcassonne
La Cite – touristy but fabulous, stunning views from the outer walls, beautiful stained glass in the Basilica. Go early or evening to avoid crowds especially in high season.
Chateau Comtal – the inner chateau within the Cite, access to inner ramparts and exhibitions, good audio guide gives you all the history.
Le Canal du Midi – C17th engineering genius and oasis of calm. Walk or cycle the towpaths or take a boat trip from the port opposite the train station.
Musee des Beaux Arts – Permanent gallery upstairs and rotating exhibitions downstairs. Rude de Verdun/ Place Gambetta
Maison des Memoires – interesting curio based on life of Joe Bosquet (writer/philosopher) and other temporary exhibitions. Rue de Verdun
Les Halles – the permanent meat and fish market, open every morning Tuesday to Saturday, a must for any food lover. Rue Albert Tomey/ Rue Aime Ramond
Fruit & Vegetable Market – Tuesday, Thursday and primarily Saturday morning. Fabulous local produce and buzzy market atmosphere. Place Carnot
Places of Interest – further afield
Minerve – picturesque village in the Black Mountains in spectacular location. Restaurant – Le Chantovent
Lagrasse – beautiful village with large abbey set in stunning river valley. Many restaurants and craft shops. You can swim in the river here or at nearby Ribaute.
Peyrepertuse and Quillan – stunningly located Cathar castles. Magnificent views but not for the fain hearted, take good shoes for walking uphill and a camera. Drive through the spectacular Gorges de Galamus on your way there and back.
Narbonne – former Roman administrative centre for the region. Good museums, castle and cathedral and excellent food market with many a good brasserie – open every day (and you can’t say that very often here).
Gruissan – charming fishing village and fabulous local oysters and seafood restaurants. La Cranquette or La Cambuse du Saunier.
Marseillan – another charming fishing village but also the home of Nouilly Prat. Do the factory tour and then go for lunch by the etang (saltwater lagoon).
