About the property

Single BR Hideaway to enchant Hobbits or Honeymooners!

One bedroom with queen bed; one bathroom--Amazing place!

NEW in Spring 2013!

COUPLES SPECIAL! Each couple will be greeted with a fresh vase of lovely cut flowers, and a complimentary bottle of wine to help make your stay special, and memorable!

The newly rebuilt Little Round House showcases a highly creative, wagon-wheel-inspired design that incorporates magnificent antique, hand-hewn chestnut barn beams. It is an earth-sheltered, passive solar, cozy nest for a totally unique, romantic getaway--close to the earth, but total comfort!

Features include one roomy but very cozy, romantic bedroom, a fully equipped kitchen and a dining area adjacent to a living room area. All are bathed in natural light from huge windows and skylights, and heated by a beautiful full-flame Avalon Eden stove, and fully air conditioned for total comfort year round.

Furnishings include several charming and elegant antiques, but everything else from appliances to furniture to the HD flat-screen TV are ALL NEW in 2013!

(Note: For more bedrooms, see our partner listing for nearby Vista Country Home, VRBO # 390177, just across the creek)

Tucked into a gentle hillside, the Little Round House offers a snug nest with full privacy from which to enjoy a magical countryside in the center of 100s of acres of pastoral beauty, in a permanently protected preservation easement, teeming with wildlife, surrounded by peaceful farmlands.

Features include extraordinary hand-crafted floors, walls, ceilings, doors and furnishings of elegant hardwoods and re-cycled chestnut beams from a 19th century barn.

With the Little Round House as your vacation base, you can EASILY DRIVE TO DOZENS OF HISTORIC SITES and some of the world's finest visitor's centers to experience history where it happened, and honor those who fought and died to make America the great nation it is today.

A mere 15-minute drive will take you to Gettysburg--to where Chamberlain stood moments before he led a bayonet charge down the slopes of Little Round Top; to Cemetery Ridge, where the rebel yell still echoes from Pickett's Confederates as they charged to the 'high water mark' of the war; to the Gettysburg Cemetery, where Lincoln delivered the most famous speech in history honoring those who gave 'the last full measure.'

From here you have easy access to many of America's other most important historical sites as well, including Antietam and Monocacy Battlefields, as well as cultural and recreational sites in and around Washington DC and Baltimore.

After a day of sightseeing, GOLF, or ANTIQUES SHOPPING in the MANY OF THE EXCELLENT ANTIQUE SHOPS in Carroll County, you can kick back at your Little Round House.

Sip a cool iced tea or glass of wine from under your private gazebo as steaks sizzle on the grill, and a red setting sun yields the dimming fields and sycamore trees to a constellation of sparkling fireflies.

Or, enjoy the Maryland traditional celebratory feast: a pot of blue crabs from Vince's Seafood, steaming in savory Old Bay seasoning, with cold bottle of delicious locally crafted beer, or a chilled glass of fresh apple cider from nearby Baugher's Orchard.

Prefer to dine out? Vista is only 3 miles from Taneytown, where you can find WORLD-CLASS DINING at the Smokehouse Restaurant, the fabulous restaurant of the deluxe country hotel, ANTRIM 1844 an elegant ante-bellum mansion. At the other end of the cost spectrum, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, and other eateries are CLOSE and offer faster food alternatives.

The larger, but still nearby towns of Gettysburg and Westminster boast wonderful small-town character in pubs, diners, and family restaurants to please any palate and any budget.

For a quiet evening at your Hobbit Hideaway, enjoy a movie or documentary from a collection of Civil War DVDs on an HD TV, which also includes broadcast TV viewing options.

For a quieter evening, curl up next to the toasty Avalon stove with one of the many books of Civil War and American fiction and history books and periodicals.

Enjoy WiFi for HIGH-SPEED INTERNET access. Use it to look up your Civil War ancestors, check your email, or tell your Facebook friends what a great time you are having!

Check the details and photos listed elsewhere on this website to find many more appealing features of the Little Round House.

And look for a link to the Little Round House’s neighbor across the creek, the 3-bedroom sister to the Little Round House, the elegant and spacious Vista Country Home.

We invite you to be our guest for an experience of comfort and learning that you will cherish and will want to share with close friends and family!

Our Home in Maryland while Visiting Family ~

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay in the Little Round House. My husband and I have made it our official home in Maryland while visiting his family. Chris and Melissa are the best of hosts! We love the seclusion with the birds, squirrels and bunnies! It's a beautiful little retreat.

Charming Getaway

  • 5 of 5

I stumbled on this place when looking for a place to stay during my son's soccer tournament at Mt. St. Mary's. My wife and I couldn't have been happier. Clean as a whistle with the perfect amount of amenities. We'll be back for sure. We've already recommended it to many people.

Relaxing and refreshing

  • 5 of 5

Pictures do not do the Little Round House justice! It's quaint, unique and perfect for relaxing. It's the perfect place if you want to hideaway and be refreshed. There are also plenty of things to do if you want to get out and explore the area. My husband and I were looking for a place to relax and be refreshed. The Little Round House was perfect for that! We loved it so much that we hope to go back again someday!

Incredible Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing time at the Little Round House. It was my husband's birthday, so I was looking for a little getaway and this place was perfect. 15 minutes from Gettysburg, we toured the battlefield one day and had dinner in the area. We came home had a fire outside and drank a few cocktails. The next morning we had a turkey walking around the bird feeder. It was such a cool experience seeing it so close! The place was clean, Chris, the owner was extremely welcoming and the property was beautiful! As we were leaving I told my husband, "I almost don't wasn't to tell everyone how wonderful this place is! I want to keep it our little secret!!!!" Welp, the secrets out. We will absolutely be back!

Outstanding

  • 5 of 5

We were very warmly greeted and immediately felt at home in this charming cottage placed beautifully in its own little meadow. As a partially earth-bermed home, the view out the kitchen window is nearly equal to the ground surface. The meadow teems with bird-life. The hiking on the grounds is wonderful, and the location is convenient to shopping and local attractions. And the home itself is a delight.
