About this property

Rustic Luxe. River Front. Luxury Cabin. Wild West Virginia

Nestled at the foot of Ice Mountain and just beyond the shore of the North River, your luxurious mountain lodge awaits. Made of impressive 100 year old logs and custom designed by international designer, Stephen Bauer, Mountainaire guarantees a stylish and comfortable getaway. The huge, screened in wrap around porch is where you’ll want to spend your days, taking in the mountain views while listening to the flowing waters of the North River. Sip espresso from the hand bent hickory rocking chairs. Light a fire in the outdoor stone stacked fireplace. Dine alfresco around the 12 person solid wood French farm table. Or curl up with a good book on one of the 4 outdoor iron beds. Feeling like a dip? Enjoy the Hot Tub (Open early Oct - late April )*, or the 3 season heated plunge spa (Open early May to late Sept)* on the deck, or simply gather around the fire table with your favorite wine and 10 of your closest friends. Once inside, the romance deepens. You enter and are amazed by the soaring ceiling of the open air living space, that includes a kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is full size with dual dishwashers, stove, refrigerator, granite counters, and everything your inner chef desires. Also on this floor, you’ll find a half bath, laundry area, and master suite. The master suite boasts a king size four poster bed, and adjoining master bath. The caramel marble tiled master bath has a large tub, oversized separate shower with jets to massage all your worries away. Also, within the shower is a steam feature. Other extras include large closets and a heated towel rack. Journey to the second floor to discover three bedrooms and another full bath. The cherry room, aptly named because the entire room is paneled in cherry wood, has an antique iron four poster queen size bed. The white room is a cozy space featuring a full size bed. Both rooms have oversized closets, cow skin rugs, and rustic touches. The third room, inspired by the iconic red barns of the North East, features 2 twin beds, with trundles. The lower floor is all about fun. Here you’ll find 3 bunk beds tucked in beneath the stairs. For more sleeping space, take advantage of the 2 trundle beds beneath. There’s also a generous bathroom featuring a slate shower. Grab a beer from the old coke fridge and play a game of billiards on our 1963 Valley Pool Table. Keep the night going with a fun game of darts, or settle in for movie night on the large projector screen. We’ve purposefully eliminated TV to give you that unplugged feeling, but netflix is available. Take a short walk to the river, and you’ll pass a fire ring that beckons for late night smores. Settle around the fire in the oversized Adirondack chairs and drink in the black night sky ablaze with a billion stars. Not to be missed is the mini log cabin tree house. Things to do: While Mountainaire is designed to whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is not without varied and marvelous excursions and activities. Wether you want to soak up the natural beauty all around, explore history, art and architecture, get your thrill on, or take in the simple pleasures of charming historic towns, you are uniquely positioned to do so. Just beyond your doorstep the natural beauty abounds with experiences. Spend the afternoon tubing on the river, which is best done in late Spring early summer when the water is high, or try your luck at fishing. The fishing season runs year-round. Trout can be caught on nice, warm winter days. Springtime is the best time for fly
fishing the North River because of the aquatic insect hatches and good water levels. Summertime is okay in the headwaters but the water can get low during the late summer. Fall is also a great time for fly fishing the North River. Hike the beautiful Ice Mountain. The mountain contains a set of stone chimneys called “Raven Rocks” and a large talis. At the base of the talis is an area where small caves hold ice most of the year. One of the popular ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in old days was to bring an ice cream freezer and fixing and dig ice from the mountain to make ice cream for a picnic. To this day there are flowers growing at the base of the talis that are found only in areas in New York state and northward. The mountain is a unique ecosystem for a middle Atlantic state. The rock chimneys are named after the large ravens that make their home in the area. Today one may also see eagles in the area. Private tours are available. To schedule a tour, please call (304) 496-7359. History buffs will love a trip to Fort Edwards, once manned by Col. George Washington. Like other fort sites used by the Colony of Virginia during the same period, the Edwards site has remained virtually undisturbed for nearly 250 years. It offers a rare look at a fort site of this period and may also provide a window into the life of a frontier settler. For more information visit Daytrips will afford you a plethora of experiences. Explore the historic town of Bath, also known as Berkely Springs, just a 45 minute drive away. Art, restaurants and spas abound! You can even view George Washington’s bathtub. Cacapon (pronounced ka-KAY-pon) Resort State Park, located on the outskirts of Berkeley Springs, is so named because it sits within the shadows of a wide expanse of Cacapon Mountain, the highest peak in the eastern portion of the state at 2,300 feet. The mountain divides the landscape, with the park on the eastern slope and the Cacapon River winding along the base of the western slope. There are so many wonderful things to do in this spectacular mountain park, which is open to the public, including golf, horseback riding, hiking, and lake activities. For more information Another beautiful town to visit is Winchester, VA. Discover charming shops delicious restaurants, centuries old architecture, numerous historical landmarks and museums waiting to be explored. Old Town Winchester offers convenience, charm and a warm welcome to all. Just 90 minutes away, Deep Creek Lake offers activities for the whole family. This spot in Western Maryland is a true all seasons destination. Snowboard, ski and even ice-fish or dogsled all winter, then come back for white water rapids, bass fishings, jet skiing and more in the summer. Luray Caverns, about 1 hour 35 minutes drive from Mountainaire, is the most popular caverns in Eastern America. Guided tours along well-lighted, paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings 10-stories high, towering stone formations, and natural wonders at every turn. Enormous chambers are filled with towering stone columns, shimmering draperies and crystal-clear pools. The National Park Service and the Department of Interior designated Luray Caverns a Registered Natural Landmark. Only 2 hours away, you can tour Frank Lloyd Wright's, Falling Water. Fallingwater is a house built between 1936 and 1939 over a waterfall in southwest Pennsylvania. Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous architect, designed the house for
his clients, the Kaufmann family. It instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. It’s a house that doesn’t even appear to stand on solid ground, but instead stretches out over a 30’ waterfall. Advanced tickets are recommended as this is a highly popular destination. Everything has been considered and designed to inspire a luxurious escape from the busy world. Perfect for large or multi family getaway, Mountainaire is rustic luxe at its finest.

* Please note that the dates for the plunge spa and hot tub switchover is approximate and not guaranteed and are weather dependent. If we experience lower than usual temperatures, the plunge spa may open later or close earlier.

SNOW / ICE IN THE WINTER MONTHS

Please be advised that we are located in a fairly remote area, and even the State roads are not always plowed and salted immediately. We strongly recommend 4WD vehicles when inclement weather is likely. The last mile is a well maintained gravel road, and during regular weather conditions, non-4WD vehicles have no issues with access, however, when there is ice or snow, access can be challenging. We do have a "snow plowing" service that plows when we get more than 4" of snow.

Please be advised that our property is equipped with external video and audio surveillance, and noise sensors.

Adult size private beds?
Wrap around porch was the best!!! Kids lived in the pool. Ball got stuck in pool table the first night. At first size of interior seemed small compared to pictures. Wall guide helped us get the projector screen and shows working and the gas grill and fire pit working for us. Family with three kids used top floor for Privacy and noise. 2 adult men had some difficulty finding long enough beds. One ended up sleeping outside. He liked it there 4 nights. He is 6’2”. The other adult was in basement. Basement had odor daughter-in-law law found divet with blood stain on their bed. . She traded it for a clean one.

Best way to relax
This was one of the most relaxing vacations I ever had. We stayed for 5 days and only left the property once to head into Winchester. The amenities are terrific ... we were never bored. I will definitely be back.

Amazing
The house and location were amazing. Despite the cold temperatures, we enjoyed our stay. The house was well stocked and had everything we needed. For those of you who love to sky gaze, bring your telescopes. The night sky showed a nice view of the Milky Way. We would definitely go back.

Absolutely stunning!
Stunning, cozy, warm and charming. I knew this place was special the moment we pulled up. We stayed duing the holiday season and the house was so very tastefully decorated. But the best part was the attention to detail that the owners provided to make you feel not only welcomed but special. The moment I got home I started pruchasing things for my own home! I like to travel and because I love to try new things, new adventures, I never stay at the same place twice. This cabin is an exception! I would stay here over and over again. Mary and Stephen have gone above and beyond with this home. It was a privilege to be able to stay here. <3

We designed and built Mountainaire out of a desire to create a simple, yet elegant escape from the city. Our work life and home life have always centered around making things of beauty and this project was deeply personal. We are so pleased with the results of this cabin and are thrilled to be able to share it.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the peaceful energy this property offered. Our boys were little and we really wanted to offer them a place where the simple life could be had, a place to unplug and catch fireflies, roast marshmallows, and play board games. Maybe we were trying to recapture our childhood, too. And, we wanted a place big enough where we could have lots of friends and family.
