Sunset Retreat: The perfect place to relax. STUNNING views and serenity

Watch the dolphins on the ferry to La Gomera, then drive for 1 hr 10 mins through amazing woods and mountains, before arriving in Taguluche.

This picturesque village of 40 houses hidden away between the volcanic mountains, offers a quiet, beautiful escape for anyone wanting to relax.

At the end of the road, park the car and walk down a stone and grass footpath that winds through the palm trees for 300 m before you reach SUNSET RETREAT. Enjoy the completely private terrace, with sunbeds and outdoor shower, a lovely garden with mango trees and banana trees and rose bushes. The evening are long and the sunsets into the sea are amazing. The night sky offers stunning views (no light polution here) and the Milky Way is easily spotted.

This old tomato packing house, completely renovated, offers a kitchen, large bathroom and a bright living room. From the footpath you continue down to the sea, where swimming and snorkling is great. The village has a church, BBQ area, bar/restaurant, another sandy beach and many walks.

If you want to get away from it all, this is for you!!!!

About Barbara shelley

Both of Jose's parents are from La Gomera. The old tomato packing house belonged to Jose's Grandparents. and he dedicated many summers reforming the house . I am from England, and came to teach English in Tenerife about 20 years ago. The first time I visited Taguluche, I fell in love with the house and the village. The magic of Sunset Retreat has stayed with me ever since.

Barbara shelley purchased this cottage in 1980

Peaceful Christmas

  • 5 of 5

A perfect stay at Sunset Retreat! The information about Sunset Retreat we received before we left, was complete. It's a very well equiped home: nothing has been missed. Every day breakfast at the terrace with a beautiful view at the ocean: every day another view. We loved the silence of the environment and did some lovely hikings in the Taguluche barranco. The walk to Valle Gran Rey via Arure is recommended (long but, beautiful). The lady of the bar/restaurant in the village Tagaluche is very nice and helpful.

Normally we don't visit a holiday place twice, but this home could be an exeption, as we loved it toooooo much! :-)

Owner's Response: We are very pleased to hear this positive feedback. The hiking routes around Taguluche are all well signed and the paths have recently been cleaned and repaired. The owners of the Bar/Restaurant our good friends and always try to look after our holiday makers. Jolimar is very kind and helpful, and Jose Antonio gives Whistling classes ( El Silbo) to anyone intersted!!

Everything we were looking for

  • 5 of 5

Sunset Retreat was perfect for what my wife and I wanted--a quiet place, relatively private (only 2-14 hikers going by a day), a complete kitchen and a view of the ocean. Sunset Retreat had all these--and more including beautiful art on the walls, very clean when we arrived, and well maintained. It also had replacement light bulbs, toilet tissue, etc. Barbara answered all our questions quickly and gave us recommendations for restaurants in the area. It turned out we didn't go out for meals much, preferring to stay home, cook for ourselves and watch the sunsets. Be aware it is a long drive from the harbor--1.5 hours minimum and an hour from Valle Gran Rey--a great place to shop, visit and eat. Because of the narrow roads we wanted to be back to the Retreat before sunset. It is also a bit of a hike from the parking place to the house--something the owners let us know--so you will get your exercise! If you want to get away from "it all"--including not having internet service--I fully recommend Sunset Retreat. We have already booked two weeks for next year! There is lots of hiking available all over the island. The area around Sunset Retreat is particularly rough, but not far away in the park there are much easier trails. By the way, we fully enjoyed the sunsets--each day was different. We even had the pleasure of the full moon. Weather was cool in the mornings and lovely in the afternoons--plan to dress in layers during the "winter". The view of the ocean at the end of the path was magnificent. On the last day we had the pleasure of a big storm--heavy winds and rain. The house stood solid and safe. We used the patio a lot. It had an open area for sunning ourselves and a covered area for reading and staying cool. (Sorry for the late review!)

perfect place to calm down

  • 5 of 5

- short in english: We have spent 10 wonderful days at Sunset Retreat in Taguluche: 5 stars at all! - could have been hardly better at all !! - important: don´t choose "GOLDCAR" if you´re going to rent a car: take "CICAR", ok? - but this negative emotion was soon blown away because of this house, this location, with this nice girl Barbara: thank you once again!-hope we come back! Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. Yes. Anyone travelling to La Gomera from Tenerife should be careful when renting a car. Goldcar will give you a very good quote on internet, but when you arrive at the airport or the ferry terminal to collect your car , they will almost DOUBLE the quote if you say you are travelling to La Gomera. They say that the insurance is not covered. So use CICAR. Their prices are good and you are covered.

Like a little Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Sunset Retreat is one of the best holiday houses we ever had. Quiet, optimal privacy, and a magnificent view on the sea. Sunset retreat is true every evening. You can sit and look for hours, and with a sharp eye, someday you see fountains caused by whale's . The surrounding is overwhelming rough.

The house and terrace is very well equipped, clean, comfortable and tidy and Barbara is a good hostess. The garden with fruit trees (mango, banana's, avocado, and orange) and nice roses and herbs makes this place extra attractive

We agree with the favorable reviews of other guests.

peace and silence

  • 5 of 5

We have spent 2 weeks at Sunset Retreat in Taguluche. The house was comfortable and had everything we needed. The view from the patio is really amazing, no matter if it is morning or evening, day or night. The peace and the silence there brought us down from every kind of stress we came with. The nature is so impressive and overwhelming that we needed a few days to get along with it.

Even the wind has its own sound and reminds you, that you are a small and vulnerable human being. We will come back!

Completely relax in the special atmosphere of Sunset Retreat. No cars or traffic, not even pavements or street lights, within 200m of this rural house. Once you arrive it doesn't take long to get into 'Taguluche Time'.

The days can be spent reading on the sunbeds in the completely private terrace, with outdoor shower to cool you down, or a short walk down to the sea for a swim. You can buy basic groceries in the shop in Taguluche, but the supermarket is in the next village, so go prepared with plenty of food to last a few days.(spices, salt and pepper, oil, filtered water ,tea, coffee and toilet paper provided ) The beautiful sunsets and following night skies have to be seen to be believed. If you feel like exploring there are plenty of walks, of various levels of difficulty, but all have great views of the sea, volcanic barrancos and vegetation. There are 2 small beaches, one of rocks and the other of black sand. Take your snorkle or go fishing.

Any time of year is perfectly warm in the Canary Islands.

Sunset Retreat is waiting for you!!!!!

Other Activities: bring your walking boots and enjoy the hiking

Notes:
A large house, well lit with super views, surrounded by fruit trees, and palm trees. Amazing sea and mountain views, this house is comfortable and intimate, away from any urban noise. Nobody over looking the terrace, and no neighbours for 200m. In ten minutes you can walk down to the sea. The area is volcanic and the foot path down to the house is not a man made path, but a natural footpath with rocky steps ,earth and grass to walk along. The walk is about 300m and uneven under foot. You should wear good trainers or walking shoes, and go carefully if you are not used to walking. There is no wifi service in the house, but if you go to the Bar/Restaurant in the village there is wifi connection. You have to ask for the code at the bar.
