About the property

Beachtown 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom Vacation Home in Quiet Residential Neighborhood

Close to Downtown South Haven - 1 Mile from South Beach

This comfortable, very accessible home sleeps 6 comfortably, or 8 with a queen-size inflatable mattress (provided). The home includes three bedrooms and 1.5 baths. There is a master bedroom on the main floor with a queen bed and large closet. Upstairs are a large bedroom with two twin beds and a small bedroom with a full bed. The upstairs bathroom has a shower.

The house has been remodeled so all the essentials are on the first floor, making the main floor very accessible. There is stair-free access to the back door entrance with a ramp from the garage to the backyard deck. The kitchen has a wide corridor; at one end is a breakfast nook with a bay window overlooking a ravine and a slider leading out to the deck. This is our favorite gathering spot in the house, and we often have 4 or 5 people sitting at the table while another 3 sit by the bay window. The living room is light and airy with picture windows overlooking the ravine and the front yard. The main floor bathroom is large with a shower and a separate tub great for bathing children after a trip to the beach, and a heated tile floor that's great on chilly mornings. A laundry room adjoins the downstairs bathroom.

The backyard deck has a wooded feel and is perfect for entertaining 8-10 people. The main entrance is in the back and there is lots of parking for up to 5 vehicles. The yard is small and landscaped with a variety of gardens and plants. There isn't a lot of room to play, enough to fit in a game of bean bag toss or horse shoes. However, there is a small park just a hundred yards away (Hartman Park) with grassy areas for playing ball or frisbee, grills and picnic tables.

The home is very conveniently located in a quiet residential neighborhood just a few blocks from downtown; far enough from the beach to avoid the noise and traffic, but still close - it's a short walk to downtown and the Kal-Haven Trail is just a mile away, perfect for runners and cyclists. The South Beach is also one mile away. We drive there with our 5 and 7-year-old girls; adults and older children can walk (or bike) there in 15-20 minutes.

My wife and I grew up in South Haven, and now we love sharing it with our children and our guests. Lonely Planet recognized the fun and beauty of the Lake Michigan shore: 'A mere 30 miles away (from Grand Rapids) sprawls Lake Michigan’s Gold Coast, perhaps the USA’s most unexpected beach getaway. Some argue that these shores rival Hawaii’s and Southern California’s. Along 300 miles of seemingly endless beaches lie sugar-white dunes, wineries, antiquing, U-pick orchards and berry farms, cider houses, Hemingway haunts – you can even go surfing. In Michigan! So if you never thought you could head to the Midwest for a Cape Cod-esque beach vacation, think again.'

About Timothy Putman

My wife and I proudly call South Haven our hometown. We both grew up in South Haven, and now reside an hour away in Grand Rapids, MI. We enjoy spending lots of time in South Haven with our two daughters.

Timothy Putman purchased this house in 2009

Why Timothy Putman chose Southwest Michigan

We are 2nd-generation owners of this house. Having grown up in South Haven, we feel very fortunate to now share many of the great things from our childhood - the beach, Sherman's Dairy, Golden Brown Bakery - with our own children.

What makes this house unique

We have spent many hours with family and friends gathered around the kitchen table and on the back yard deck. South Haven is a great, fun town, and this house is a very comfortable place from which to enjoy it.

My wife and I grew up in South Haven, Michigan, a quaint Lake Michigan beach town located in Michigan's agricultural southwest region. South Haven has a long tradition as a vacation destination for folks coming in from 'the city', including many from Chicago. As a young man working downtown in my family's hardware store, I could recognize visitors who had just arrived - they were still moving about twice as fast as everyone else. Over a few hours people would relax and shift into the slower, relaxing pace they came to South Haven for. It's a great place to unwind, to connect with friends and family, and to enjoy the simpler pleasures of life for awhile.

South Haven features two very nice beaches on Lake Michigan, the North Beach and the South Beach, split by the Black River which winds through the middle of town. Both feature wide expanses of well-groomed sand, playground equipment and piers for strolling - the South Beach Pier ends with a striking red lighthouse. The waters of Lake Michigan warm up in the summer and are pleasant from late June into September, depending on prevailing winds and currents. On a sunny summer day both beaches buzz with sunbathers and swimmers, children playing in the sand, beach volleyball players, windsurfers, kites, and paddleboarders. People stroll the piers, watching boats meander up and down the channel to the lake and seeing how the fishing is going.

Downtown South Haven features more than a dozen restaurants, bars and eateries of various kinds, toy stores, candy and chocolate shops, art galleries, wine tasting rooms, cute clothing boutiques and more. It's easy to while away a few hours in downtown South Haven. The Golden Brown Bakery is a family favorite; maybe it's because we grew up on their donuts, but we've never found anything to top their chocolate frycakes and carmel pershings. We really enjoy the Michigan Theater, the local movie house that boasts three screens...it's very economical compared to 'big city' movie theaters.

South Haven has a variety of parks and playgrounds with playground equipment, ball fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts, but I have to mention Kids Corner. We've had countless hours of fun at Kids Corner, a wooden playground structure within a city park at the corner of St. Joseph and South Haven Streets. My wife and I actually helped (a little) build this whimsical pirate ship/castle/maze - it was a community volunteer effort, and it's amazing.

The Kal-Haven Trail deserves special mention. It's a hiking, biking and horseback riding trail stretching from South haven to Kalamazoo. It features a covered bridge and passes through small towns, wooded areas and scenic countryside.

Southwest Michigan is an agricultural area that boasts numerous u-pick farms, and also an up and coming wine industry - there are enough wineries to put together several wine-tasting expeditions.

Would stay here again

Great location, very clean, and affordable. More than enough space for our group. There's a little bit of a walk to downtown and the beach, but it's doable.

AWESOME Yet Again!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this rental several years in a row now and the owners couldn't be more accommodating. The house itself is always super clean and the amenities provided are above and beyond other houses we have rented for vacations. My family and I would highly recommend this rental!

Owner's Response: Thanks Rhonda - we're so glad you've chosen to stay at our home for your South Haven vacations with family and friends for several years now! So rewarding to hear that you are able to enjoy this precious time together and our home provides a good "base of operations"! We love that it's close to the beach and downtown - but away from the hustle and bustle in a quiet, restful neighborhood. Hope to see you again next year!

Amazing house, amazing location and amazing service!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house with 5 adults and a toddler and it was hard to tell who enjoyed it the most. The patio outside was a perfect spot to reflect on day spent wandering around town and enjoying the perfect beach down the street. The toddler had a blast playing inside and outside the house. Besides staying at this house, I highly recommend checking out the farmer’s market too!

Great location, very clean, kitchen well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

This property was great - only a few blocks from the cute downtown area and waterfront. We walked to the waterfront every night and felt the neighborhoood was safe and friendly. The house was very, very clean. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked breakfast and dinner at the house every day without any issues. It's also just down the road from a Meijer so it's convenient to pick up groceries. We had a young child with us and only had to do some minimal child proofing. Otherwise the house seemed very child friendly with lots of games and books. The only downside is that one of the mattresses was very uncomfortable. The master bedroom had a very comfortable mattress but one of the secondary bedrooms upstairs had a mattress that sagged quite a bit on one side, so much that it felt like you would roll off the bed if it hadn't been against a wall. That was really the only drawback. Otherwise it was a great vacation house.

Owner's Response: Hi Elizabeth, we're glad you had a good stay and our home met almost all your needs - but so sorry about that uncomfortable bed! We are repacing that mattress and box spring, and hope to have you back in the future!
