Overview

About the property

One bedroom cottage with full kitchen, florida room and deck

Charming. Romantic. Classic. This Chesapeake Bay Beach Cottage is perfect for a couple or a single. A great get away.

Culag - Scottish Gaelic for 'wee one back behind,' is a classic Chespeake Bay cottage but there is nothing 'wee' about its beautiful views or setting. This cottage is fully renovated with one bedroom, one bath, full kitchen and gorgeous Bay views at a price you can afford. Perfect for a single, a couple or a small family, Culag offers private beach access and beach activities, like swimming, kayaking or lounging - all within a few hundred feet from the front door.

This beautifully decorated one bedroom, one bath whispers 'relax, kick your shoes off, put your feet up and unwind.' Culag also provides a Florida room plus washer and dryer, giving you everything you need to make your visit perfect.

Enjoy coffee on your private deck surrounded with Bay views, then wander down to the beach. Kayak the Bay or the many secluded creeks filled with wildlife and solitude. Or, bike down to Pt. Lookout Park, only a few miles away. 2 Kayaks and 2 bicycles are provided for your exclusive use. Or, take the kids crabbing in nearby Hollis Lake behind the beach (more like a pond) or fishing at Pt. Lookout State Park.

Look in one direction and enjoy the beauty of the Bay views, look the other direction and to find peaceful wooded forests. Enjoy them both... in one package. Herons, egrets, osprey, pelicans - and, occasionally, porpoises provide great wildlife watching.

Historic St. Mary's City, the original capital of Maryland is 10 miles away and Solomon's Island, St. George's Island and other resort communities are short drives - but who wants to leave?

Only 2 hours from Washington or Baltimore, make Culag your getaway retreat - over and over.

If Culag is booked for the dates you desire, we have another modern, nearby small Chesapeake Bay waterfront property with amazing view. Email and ask us other options for your stay.

About Peggy Binzel

Love urban life; also, love the isolated beach with amazing wildlife. Scotland is a welcome retreat from hectic city life.

Why Peggy Binzel chose Chesapeake Bay

Scotland is a rare find. Rarely do you find an area that begins with beautiful forests and opens up onto fabulous beaches. Little traffic but only 2 hours from Washington or Baltimore. I discovered a jewel.

What makes this cottage unique

Sunrise over the Bay with morning coffee is heavenly. Walks on the beach. Take a 30 minute kayak ride or a 5 hours one - very convenient out the front door. Enjoy a tasting of good quality local wines at beautiful Woodlawn plantation just 10 miles away.

Extremely clean, cozy property steps to water and able to relax on patio under the stars

  • 5 of 5

Amazing. We will be back. Everything you need in a clean cozy cottage with views of bay off your patio or sun room. This is a gold mine coming from busy D.C. Area to enjoy nature and truly have a relaxing g experience. Our dogs made furry neighborhood friends and are very sad to be leaving. If you just need a reset and some quiet Country with private beach access- it's a must!!

Relaxing And Slow Paced Venue To Recharge

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I try to find places to vacation that are on the more quiet side and where we can enjoy the outdoors. We avoid touristy developed areas as much as possible. The cottage fit the bill. It is on a quiet private community road in an area surrounded only by the bay and woods. Very tranquil. There are no resorts or hotels in the area. Just a state park, a general store that was entertaining, a couple of restaurants, and a Dollar General.

Our typical day was a slow start, followed by reading on the quiet beach, walking, biking, and kayaking. We'd shower around 5 PM then head about 5 miles down the road to one of two restaurants in the area. No long drives. You could head about 30 minutes away to get to more distractions but that wasn't our goal.

The cottage itself was quaint, clean, and updated. The bed was comfortable. We had everything we needed. There was a maintanance person close by that responded immediately when a bike had a flat tire.

I can't think of anything else to add. If you need lots of distractions, the cottage may not be for you. If you like quiet and relaxing with outdoor activities, go here. We'll be back.

Quiet, cozy get away

  • 4 of 5

I stayed here Monday - Thursday the last week of June. It was the perfect size for me and my 2 kids (5 & 10). Pros: Quiet, allows dogs, the beach there is private and there was no one there the first day we were there. The second day there was another couple that were at the opposite end of the beach. I did not use the bike or kayaks but would have liked to (couldn't do by myself w/2 small children). I read another review where someone mentioned a large dog that runs loose - Roscoe the German Shepherd. He is very friendly and would not hurt anyone. My 5 year old played with him for 2 hours on the beach the 2nd day we were there. My 2 peekapoms growled at him and he didn't even bare his teeth back even once. He's very sweet. The only think that grossed me out was all the bug guts that were on the bedroom ceiling. It was bad - there were like 20 bugs smashed up there. I go camping a lot so I was over it. On the small couch in the LR - there was black dog hair all over the white cover - I had an extra beach blanket so I threw that over the couch during our stay. Also, one of the pillows was badly stained but we didn't use it. I did strip the bed and washed the sheets before we used them, there was a bug in the bed along with a few of those black dog hairs. One of the locals did mention that after July 4th all of the jellyfish seem to start rolling in. If you are going to want to swim - this is something to keep in mind. If you just want to fish/boat, I wouldn't worry too much. It was very relaxing there and we had a lovely time. I would recommend it but not if you are super squeamish about bugs. You are in a remote area - there are bugs. Also, they do keep the landscaping nicely maintained which helps to control bugs. I would recommend to the owners to trim their thorny rose bush back from the walking path between the house and the fence.

Owner's Response: Please, dear guests, if you find a situation like dog hair on a sofa, call us immediately. Otherwise, we cannot remedy the situation. We hire cleaners to ensure that every house is clean for our guests. Thus time, it appears we failed to get the house clean to our high standards. We allow pets but may consider no longer allowing them since more than a few guests do not manage them well and allow them on furniture and without even putting down pet blankets. Nonetheless, those pet hairs should have been cleaned up well - though a stray hair or two is possible even with the best cleaning. As to smashed bugs on the ceiling, the prior guest must have left the door open at night. Still, the cleaner should have noticed. We regret that our standards were not met in this instance but we assure our guests that cleanliness is not just a goal but a requirement. This instance was an aberration, not the rule.

Relaxing

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at the Culag property. It was the quiet and peaceful getaway we were looking for. The property was clean and we used the bicycles to tour Point Lookout for an afternoon. It was very interesting and beautiful! We packed a picnic lunch to take with us. The beach was 2 blocks away, and we had it to ourselves. It was chilly enough to need a sweatshirt, but it was nice to sit and relax. We found a lot of pretty rocks and had fun sitting and watching the waves. We didn't get to use the kayaks because the water was too rough while we were there. We went to Courtney's to eat (great!) and got some shrimp steamed at Kellam's to take with us. Buzzy's was a fun place to stop in for a drink and conversation! We were sad when it was time to leave.

Sublime!

  • 4 of 5

The cottage itself is sunny and beautiful; A very calm, restorative place, decorated beautifully and comfortably. The little beach was stunningly beautiful in the morning, dotted with Ospreys and their nests. The whole trip was so peaceful! We really needed that.

The host was GREAT with communication! Clear instructions and timely responses.

This was a wonderful get away. Thanks so much!

Wooded and beach together, this remote location on the Chesapeake Bay is near the city but a world away. A short bike ride from Pt. Lookout State Park but still its own private beach community. A great escape to relax, enjoy the beauty of the Bay, boat, fish swim or read a book on the beach,
