About the property

3 Bedroom Log Cabin in wooded secluded area.

Peace and quiet. Solitude on the St. Francis is a lovely log cabin set in the woods. It is approximately ten miles north of Sam A. Baker State Park in an isolated area. The cabin sits on 260 acres that border the St. Francis River. The St. Francis is easily accessible (a quick two minute walk from the cabin) and is an excellent fishing, swimming and floating river. This log cabin has a master bedroom with a queen size bed, a loft with a full size mattress and a downstairs semi-private bedroom with a full size log bed. Solitude is all electric. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, stove-top burners, crock pot, drip coffee maker, toaster, pots & pans, dishes and utensils. There is one bathroom and a walk-in shower. Solitude is equipped with central heat and air a land line telephone and satelite TV with dvd. The very cold Seabaugh Spring sits in front of the cabin and flows into a small pond and creek that leads into the St. Francis. Bring your inner tubes and swim gear and spend the day at the river. There is also a BBQ grill in front of the cabin and a fire pit for bonfires. There are two miles of hiking trails and a two acre fishing pond on the property. If you are looking for a getaway from civilization, this is the place.

About Mike & Jody Fleming

Mike Fleming became the concessionaire at Sam A. Baker State Park in 1996. He soon began looking for property on the St. Francis River to erect a log cabin, a dream long held as a young man growing up in Kansas City. He and his future wife Jody attended the Great Lakes School of Log Building in Ely, Minnesota. The cabin they helped build was purchased and shipped via log truck to this very special spot where it was reassembled. Since then, a full kitchen and bedroom have been added.

Mike & Jody Fleming purchased this cabin in 1997

Why Mike & Jody Fleming chose Des Arc

Mike heard about this beautiful property in 1997. His first hike into this remote spot was love at first sight. Locals tell of the history of Seabaugh Spring, (located in front of the cabin), a well-known resting spot along the hilly and arduous journey by horse and buggy to Fredericktown.

What makes this cabin unique

The 260 acres is an extremely isolated area teeming with Missouri wildlife including deer, turkey, Ferrell hogs, bald eagles, turkey vultures, owls, coyotes, skunks, bobcats, raccoons, opossum and yes, snakes. Occasionally, some wildlife can be sighted from the cabin's porch. Swimming, fishing, canoeing, moderately strenuous hiking trails and bird watching are some of the activities you can enjoy.

If you need to get away from it all, Solitude is the place. It truly is for nature lovers. If you need towns, restaurants, etc. it probably is not for you. Our stay was early in June 2018 for three days. We had a marvelous time with our furry babies who enjoyed running free and swimming in the spring pond. We are so appreciative that they were allowed to go with us, thanks Mike and Jodi. We brought two baby gates so we were able to keep them contain in the kitchen on the tile floor to reduce hair and dirt in the beautiful cabin, especially when they smelled doggy from swimming. The cabin is beautifully decorated and the beds extremely comfortable. We walked to the bigger pond which is not pictured in the description of the place, but it is truly a nice little lake with a canoe available. We fished at the river and enjoyed the serenity. Mike and Jodi came to check on us our first day because the LAN line was out of service and they wanted to make sure we had everything we needed. It isn't an easy place to get to but we might have taken the long way and there was road construction on the little two lane blacktop. Very worth the 2 1/2 hour drive from St. Louis to get to this very isolated cabin. We will definitely return!

Didn't want to leave and hope to be back!

  • 5 of 5

This place was the perfect choice for my husband, my dog, and myself. We stayed 4 nights and none of us wanted to leave but we do hope to return! We explored the surrounding areas of Missouri but mostly we hung out and explored the land the cabin was on. The peace, the quiet, the solitude, and the surroundings made it perfect. The spring daffodils, redbuds, irises, and ALL the wildflowers were just peeking out despite the cool temperatures. The clear spring has a small cascade as it flows to the small pond near the cabin that was very tranquil sounding. We fished at the big pond but despite a bite with every cast of my fishing pole, I was rusty and didn't manage to catch anything. There is a road to the big pond but recent rains made the road a little tricky while we were there but no matter, we hiked to the big pond. It was quite a hike uphill, and reminded me I am not getting any younger, but SO worth it! The large pond isn't pictured as I recall; it is much larger than the pond at the cabin and its surrounded by private woods. We found the canoe at the big pond as well as the one down at the river. Saving that for next time when its warmer. It was like living in our own private park for a few days, and that's just the outside. The cabin was amazing. The property owner's have taken great care in the details of the structure as well as the amenities. It was very cozy and comfortable. I loved all the textile choices and there were interesting books, movies, and games. We made an attempt at 1000 piece puzzle we brought but since we spent so much time outside enjoying the natural area, we didn't get that done. Our dog, who is a turbo charged youngster, even had SO much fun running carefree that she was a little tired. Ok, she was exhausted but she will never admit that! If you are bringing a dog or dogs, I'd suggest to use your leash at night. Pepper bolted after some deer in the darkness which scared them AND me. Better and safer for all involved to use your leash at night. Our hosts were helpful when I asked if I could add 2 more nights to the reservation and made that a smooth transaction. Mike called the following morning to check that we arrived safely and make sure we didn't have any questions after our first night there. We had everything we needed and discovered so much about this area of Missouri. Thank you to the Fleming's for sharing this property with us!!!

Beautiful, secluded get-away!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our quick spring break getaway with our 3 teenagers! Disconnecting from internet, sitting on the deck and listening to the gurgling Spring was exactly what we needed! The grounds are beautiful with an easy walk to the river and a beautiful pond. The cabin was so comfy and had everything we needed. We had a rainy day, and the selection of games and DVD’s was appreciated! Our kids and 2 golden retrievers had a wonderful time - I’m sure it would be even better in the summer!

Five stars really aren't enough...

  • 5 of 5

...for this beautiful, rustic, with modern comforts cabin. On day three, we heard a plane that interrupted our beautiful wilderness silence. Luckily, it flew by fast! The hiking trails are well marked and clear, the water is super clean, the bass we're biting at the river's edge, and our dogs had a blast. If you are the type who cannot deal without your cell phone and the internet, stay home because you will not enjoy walking, looking at the fall colors, or the steam rising from the spring pond. For those of us who gladly let go of the hustle and bustle, Solitude is a small slice of heaven. There's a journal there that allows you a small glimpse at other's visits, and from what it said, Mike and Jody you are doing great. We agree! Thank you for trusting us with your beautiful cabin.... we hope to come back to celebrate an Anniversary someday. Loreen & Dave, with Chandler and Frostee

Owner's Response: Thank you Loreen & Dave for your kind review. Mike & I are thrilled that you enjoyed the peace and quiet of Solitude. It isn't for everyone because of it's isolation and lack of cell service, like you said. We welcome you, Chandler & Frostee back! Until then, take care. Jody & Mike Fleming
