About Sam Michel

Our family makes its home in Massachusetts, though Noy and I, I think, continue to have our hearts out West where we grew up. Work at the University of Massachusetts brought us back east, however, where we have happily raised a boy Ben Reno, and a girl Phoebe, aged 17 and 13. On a sabbatical year, when the kids were 11 and 7, we all went down to Ecuador, stayed outside of Quito in the mountains, visited Canoa, and fell for the place hard. We built this house there, carved out two years to live there (kids went to local school, very friendly, welcoming), and now visit as often as we can. The house is really a labor of love, designed by us with an eye cast to the southwest where we grew up, and to the beach and the country where the house sits. Throughout the house are Mexican tiles, handpainted sinks, Mexican fixtures we brought down in suitcases over the years of the house's construction. Mostly we meant it to be a place of some beauty, a place to enjoy good food and drink and spend good times with family and friends. I think it is all of that. Plus which, geez, whoever thought a couple of desert rats would ever learn to surf?

What makes this house unique

Truth? And trying not to brag? I love everything about this place. Very tough to be anywhere in this house without seeing something appealing. Combinations of materials: wood, brick, stucco, iron; color combinations; arches, niches, tiles, lighting, shadows, whim, function, quality. Very lucky to have worked with a fantastic builder, Greg, owner of Canoa Beach Hotel, full of local knowledge and ideas. I have my favorite spots--chair outside the master bedroom, couch on the balcony--though I have learned to love other spots through friends we have had stay with us in the past as well. No doubt you will find yours...

Beach relaxing fun

  • 5 of 5

This home truly becomes your home away from home! The design of the home encourages relaxing family fun and communication. While there is wifi service, all the fun and exciting things to do in Canoa and the surrounding area made me happy to put my I-pad down and enjoy the peaceful and relaxing beach life. While the home is very large for a beach house, it still felt comfortable and allowed us to enjoy each other's company. The house truly is right on the beach and what a wonderful beach it is. I enjoyed walking on the beach and finding beautiful sea shells. The water was nice and warm and playing in the big waves was exhilarating!! Of course, the caretakers Chris and Tony made a wonderful visit to a beach house into a vacation of a life time. They provided the "local" knowledge on everything from shopping at the local markets to meeting expats that quickly became friends. The young backpackers added an element of fun and a feeling of nostalgia for my dreams of long ago to quit the rat race and just travel around and enjoy the beautiful planet with which we are blessed. I often read reviews and wonder if a place is as special as the reviewer states, but I do not write reviews. So this place is above and beyond any description that I can provide to make me take the time and expend the energy to write this review. The "goodbyes" we're easier than any trip I have previously had, because I know I will be back many times not just for the great house, wonderful beach and relaxing town but mainly because I have a new family in my Canoan friends,

Paradise found!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very hard review to write. We found a piece of paradise that we would like to keep secret, but it is definitely worth sharing. From the moment Tony, one of the caretakers, picked us up at the Manta airport we knew we were in good hands. Tony and Chris, his lovely wife, made us feel right at home and helped navigate the ins and outs of being in a foreign country. They took us under their wing and made shopping, dining, meeting new friends, and experiencing a new culture a wonderful adventure. I can't say enough good things about them and what they added to staying at "Sam and Noy's house".

It was a very comfortable experience arranging our stay with Sam the owner. He took a great deal of time answering our questions about the house and the area prior to, and after booking the house.

Now to the house itself... It was very obvious from the time we walked into their home that a lot of love, sweat and especially spirit went into the building this home. A big Texas thank you to you Sam for sharing. Everywhere you look you could tell that a lot of thought, time and effort went into every detail of the home. There are four spacious bedrooms, thre of which open right to the ocean. We often slept with the doors open to enjoy the sound of the waves and the sea breezes. This is not your typical cement house you find in Ecuador. The walls were painted in warm muted hand washed colors that flowed from one to into another complimenting each other perfectly. The kitchen was set up perfectly for preparing meals and interacting with family during the process. We especially liked the outdoor patio with grill, for dining outside. We shared two wonderful dinars outside with Tony, Chris and some of the new friends we made while staying in the house. We also enjoyed family meals on the patio as well. The temperature and atmosphere were perfect. The landscaping was natural plants with splashes of different colors and textures everywhere you looked. There is a night jasmine planted by one of the patio windows that added a light sweet smell to the ocean breezes. The beach was heaven. The house is just far enough out of town that we rarely encountered any one else on the beach. Each day of beach coming was completely different. One day there would be tons of shales, the next day would be sand dollars and drift wood, and others we would find shards of pottery. The house was clean and better than described. the town was a quaint fishing village with great food. Will be back.

Peace and Tranquility

  • 5 of 5

If you appreciate miles of unspoiled beach, the sound of the ocean waves, a beautiful home with excellent caretakers, a small fishing village within walking distance, friendly people and a great owner to work with, then this is your vacation paradise. We just returned from spending a month at this Canoa home. The pictures do not do this home justice. It is filled with unique touches and beautiful views of the ocean from three of the four bedrooms. During the month, we were fortunate to have family members visit including our 8 month old granddaughter. Several members rented surf boards in town and enjoyed the waves and the sandy bottom. The water is shallow for a good distance out and is safe for children. The town of Canoa was about a 35 minute walk on the beach. We often went into town to eat lunch and buy groceries. It is only a 10 minute walk to the Canoa hotel were you can get great food and drink. Mostly we enjoyed being together, the great temperature and the constant ocean breeze. If you are looking for the fast lane this is not the place. For us, it was perfect. Can't say enough about Chris and Tony who help you get settled and stay in a casita on the property. They were there for us every day, helping us get groceries, set up activities, picking up family from the Manta airport ( reasonable fee), and just being friends. If you go, take the plunge with a paraglide tandem ride. Not to be missed! Thanks Sam for allowing us to share this slice of peace and tranquility. We hope to return soon.

Amazing Beach House Experience!

  • 5 of 5

The Canoa Beach House is a romantic and playful design looking right over the ocean. The house was fresh, clean, and in wonderful condition.

You'll only get props from us on the amenities; no complaints. We loved the distinct touches with the tile and architecture. Thank you Tony and Kris for getting setup in the beach house and suggestions for the area. Thanks Greg for the conversation on the beach house history up at the Canoa Beach Hotel while enjoying your amazing dishes and "Fried Elvis." We'll recommend the fabulous experience at the Canoa Beach House for those who want a peaceful, relaxing, and playful season. Sam, thanks so much for letting us hang at your exquisite pad.

Nearest Airport
50 Miles
Manta, Ecuador
Nearest Motorway
Ruta del Sol (extremely light traffic)
Nearest Beach
You are on the beach
Car: not necessary

The house is located about a twenty-five minute walk on the beach to the village of Canoa. It is a very quiet place, few people make it down the beach to us, the surf break is mellow, and you will have zero competition for either the waves or your spot on the sand. Plenty of restaurants and bars in the village. The hostal Bambu has a lovely restaurant/bar on the beachfront in town and has a great Happy Hour where people gather for sunset. The restaurant Saboreame (there are two in town) has terrific ceviches and a very good 'encocado,' which is a way of preparing fish and shrimp in a tasty coconut sauce. Closer to the house and offering excellent food is the Hotel Canoa, about a ten minute walk, and hands-down the most 'dressed up' of Canoa's many hotels, bars, and restaurants. Talk to Greg, Kentucky transplant and the owner of the hotel, and he will answer just about any question you have. There is dancing on the beach on weekends in several of the open chozas, and taxis are available for hire. The Surf Shack and the Hostal Coco Loco are favored gathering places for expats; food for those missing burgers, pizzas, and good Mexican fare. Ask at the Hotel Canoa or Surf Shack about paragliding from the cliffs on the ocean, tours to organic farms, horseback riding, board rentals. Ask about a lowtide excursion to the caves where the beach ends in the cliffs to the north. Bird watching a little inland. If you have a car, a nice day trip to Punta Prieta is well worth your while, as well as any number of fine beaches, though if you prefer to stay close to home, you will not be disappointed by the beach right out your door. Bring your sunscreen and a good book, rent a board, stock up on mangoes, papayas, fresh veggies, fish from the market, and you are likely not wanting to go anywhere other than the place to which you have arrived....
