As beautiful as it looks, and more!

  • 5 of 5

I don't remember the last time I slept so soundly! While my

8 year old--presenting me at 5:50 am the first morning with an egg fresh from the chicken coop--did shorten my morning wake up ;) I will affirm that this place was absolutely magical. From the gorgeous gardens (thank you, Kersti!), beautiful wooded trails--connecting to both stately castle and friendly town--to the neighbor's sheep whose "baa's" at bedtime tell you it is time to sleep, we were missing it before we left. Frank as both host and fishing guide was genuine, competent and generous with his time and we were delighted to feast on brown trout caught the same afternoon by our girls under his tutelage. The photos--both interior and exterior--along with descriptions of the Old Ashford Schoolhouse, only begin to reveal the beauty of this place.

Our relaxing stay in Cong.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Ashford Old Schoolhouse and it was wonderful. It was a short walk into Cong and the grounds of the castle are a fabulous place to take a stroll. The cottage became like home and our hosts, Frank and Kersti were just lovely. It was a truly peaceful and relaxing getaway. We quickly became regulars at the Hungry Monk Cafe in Cong for breakfast and/or lunch. The pubs in Cong regularly had live music in the evenings as well as good food and drink of course. Our only plans for the week were to go on an Extended Hawk Walk at the Ireland School of Falconry just a two minute walk from the cottage and to go fishing with Frank who is a local guide. The Hawk Walk is fantastic. One of the best things we have ever done. The weather made it tricky to get out and fish but Frank came through one afternoon and found us a beautiful brown trout. Probably the most memorable fish ever and we live on a lake. The whole week was just great and all the people we met were so nice and helpful. We didn't have a car but really didn't need one. This was our 2nd trip to Ireland and we can't wait to get back. Cheers!

Perfect stay in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

We had an extended stay at the Old Schoolhouse which proved to be the perfect home away from home for our travels around Ireland. The village of Cong and the Ashford Castle Estate is a magical place to explore and we felt at home the moment we arrived. Everything one needs is a quick walk away-shopping, pubs, restaurants, walking trails, and some of the nicest people in the world. Activities (fishing, horseback riding, archery, shooting, running and walking trails to name a few) are plentiful and right on the doorstep of the cozy cottage which was well maintained, spotless and has everything one needs to be comfortable. Hosts Frank and Kersti were exceptional, quick to offer information and suggestions when asked, but never intrusive. We look forward to returning to the fairytale setting and to the friends we made in Cong.

A little bit of Heaven in Ireland

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Schoolhouse! Such a charming place with detailed touches of comfort and charm. It was a week of needed respite, relaxation and peace in a perfect setting. Frank And Kersti Costello were wonderful hosts and I can hardly wait to return. We loved exploring the area, taking long walks, and spending a quiet evening in front of the fireplace. I loved watching the stars through the skylight in the bedroom an the occasional clear night. Thank you both for your kindness and sharing this beautiful place.

Warm, cosy cottage in superb setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely family holiday in the middle of winter and had a splendid time. Frank and Kirsti were impeccable hosts, leaving us to our own devices and facilitating all needs. We fished, walked, did some falconry and lots of sightseeing in Connemara. A perfect break. Will do this again. Thoroughly recommended. From Hong Kong

Really perfect place to stay on holidays

  • 5 of 5

We tremendously enjoyed our stay in the Old School House. It's a perfect base for trips in and around the counties of Galway and Mayo. And if you don't want to go too far away, the woods around the castle grounds are well suited for leisurely walks. The cottage is cosy, clean and, as we Dutch would say, "gezellig". Which is even made more agreeable by the warm hospitality of the owners Frank and Kersti and the nice scones provided by the latter. The pubs in Cong provide very good food and are in walking distance (about 20 minutes or so). We especially liked Lydon's and The Crows Nest. If you like fishing, you can do no better than ask Frank, who is a professional fishing guide to give you tips about fishing on Lough Corrib. He also rents out boats and all for a very reasonable fee. This has been one of the best holidays we ever had and will certainly recommend the cottage to anyone who wants to visit Ireland. It's been a wonderful introduction to the country.
