Overview

About the property

Whether for work or fun, this spacious apartment is a home away from home.

This apartment features a living room, home office, bedroom, full bath, kitchenette, laundry room, patio, and backyard. Knotty-pine paneling and wall-to-wall carpeting lend coziness to a three-quarter basement with a private entrance in the historic district of Rosemont, an easy 12-minute walk to the King Street or Braddock Road Metro stations. Nearby Old Town and Del Ray neighborhoods offer a wide variety of restaurants, shops, parks, and galleries.

Named for a Philadelphia Main Line neighborhood, Rosemont is both gracious and safe. This bungalow was built in 1917 from a plan by the Stickley Brothers of Arts and Crafts Movement fame. After a day of touring or working, relax with board games, books, magazines, tv, or enjoy the patio and backyard. From the Metro it's minutes to and from DC and National Airport. Walk to Old Town or catch the free trolley at the King Street Metro. On-street parking does not require a permit.

Walk to a neighborhood cafe, Old Town, a city pool, Whole Foods, Crate and Barrel Outlet, bookstores, tennis court, and parks.

The kitchenette has a mini-fridge, microwave, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, Brita water pitcher, dishes, utensils, coffee, and tea. You control the thermostat and can expect a first aid kit, towels, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryer, clock radio, laundry supplies, wifi, DVD player, and cable tv.

For a $5 service fee plus cost, send a grocery list to have your basics upon arrival.

About Paddy Bowman

My work as a folklorist takes me around the country, and this apartment reflects my eclectic travels. I've loved living here for 20 years and set up Camp Serendipity to help others feel at home while on the road. I am happy to help you plan your stay. The name comes from a painting I bought in rural Louisiana depicting a 1917 fishing camp. It hangs in the apartment's living room and reflects my love of serendipity since my home was built in 1917 and like that old Louisiana camp, this place is also a great getaway spot.

Paddy Bowman purchased this bungalow in 1993

Why Paddy Bowman chose Alexandria

Living on a quiet block equidistant to two Metro stations allows me to get into DC quickly for meetings and for fun and to enjoy neighborhood walks to parks and a new coffee and wine shop, dinner in Old Town, lunch in Del Ray.

What makes this bungalow unique

Older homes have always appealed to me, especially bungalows with big porches, which abound in Rosemont. This has been an ideal home for me.

Quaint garden apartment in a lovely quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Lots of space in this large one-bedroom place. Nice that there is a living room and a place to have a small meal. But you're in Alexandria--Eat out! It is a bit of a walk to the King Street Metro but very doable. Once at the King St Metro it is so easy to take the free trolley to the waterfront or the Metro into DC. We never heard any noise from neighbors or from upstairs. The neighborhood is lovely. We felt quite safe returning at 10:30p via walking. Uber only if you want to.

Lovely neighborhood, generous hostess

  • 4 of 5

In a lovely, quiet neighborhood with easy access to the Metro. Paddy is a very considerate hostess. The Metro cards she provides are just one example of her generosity. She was also very flexible with arrival and check out times and stayed in touch with us throughout our stay. Personally, I'm not a fan of firm beds, so sleeping was difficult. There is a slight musty smell in the space likely given to the fact that it is an older house, and a basement apartment. Overall, I would recommend this property. We were grateful for Paddy's kindness in accommodating us! Our family of four made many special memories together in DC and look forward to more in the future.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry about that firm mattress! I'm a fan, but we all have a different "sleep number." Delighted you all made such good use of your time in Alexandria and DC. And apologies for any mustiness. I'll turn on the a.c. full blast to lower the humidity to see if that addresses the issue. We've had a lot of rain, which doesn't help. Thank you again for the booking, Paddy

Comfortable place to rest while visiting D.C.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here as my family of 3 visited D.C. For the first time. The home is close to the metro and old town Alexandria. Love the 1920s character of the area. We will definitely stay here the next time we visit D.C.

Camp Serendipity

  • 5 of 5

Our daughter was graduating from GWU. Since she lives in Alexandria, VA we wanted to find something close to her. Camp Serendipity was ideal. About 15 minutes from the Metro and in a lovely, quiet neighborhood. Owner was most accommodating. She even had recommendations for nearby sights, restaurants, etc. It made a for a wonderful trip. We highly recommend Camp Serendipity

Great location and feels like home

  • 5 of 5

We love this location for visiting DC. It's easy to walk to the metro (we have a 4 & 6 year old - takes about 15 minutes with them) and it's wonderful staying in a beautiful neighborhood area. Paddy is a lovely host and very kind. She met us upon arrival and had the place heating (we arrived during a brief cold period) and the extra airbed already set up and ready for my youngest to hop right into. The apartment was spacious, had plenty of towels & linens, and the beds were comfortable. It was also nice having Metro cards available that you can easily load money onto at the station for the fare you need, one less thing I had to think about.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, you all were great travelers. Sorry you had to brave so much rain and chilly weather, but you didn't let that hold you up. Enjoyed having you, bring the kids back as they get older and want to revisit DC, return guests get a discount!

First VRBO Experience

  • 5 of 5

Self proclaimed 'county folk' going to visit our son in the big city, we were hesitant to try a VRBO. Everything about our experience was positive. We especially enjoyed the location (nice neighborhood and close to the train). Paddy made us feel right at home and provided us with key essentials: recommendations on where to eat, etc. as well as train passes we could use. It was much nicer to come home to every night, instead of a hotel. We are definitely going to recommend to family & friends visiting the DC area.
