The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from it's center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. Your own private parking leads to the stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV with satalite TV and blueray. The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment so that if you stand in the center you have a 360 degree view of the sky. Notice how it changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through it's moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. An antique ship's light occupies the cuppola and can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. Seagulls are your companions and you may hear their webby feet tapping on the roof in the morning. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home (VRBO# 405338) and is next door to the 'Writer's Cabin' (VRBO# 452067) and 'The Boathouse' a recently constructed timberframe home that is the residence of the owners. You are always welcome to drop in to the Boathouse and see what project is under way. Currently the owner is building an Alaskan skiff. If you are traveling with a large group, consider including the neighboring Fisherman's and Writer's cabins which share the property. There is capacity for a group of 12 or so if you rent all the cabins. You can get the whole family reunion or wedding group on one site! The Lighthouse is known for it's inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a handfull of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Grand Marais
We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.
What makes this Studio unique
This is a great location for the summer festivals fall leaf looking, and winter get always. Music and art seem to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening in the summer. Artists are plying their wares in many shops. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock. Not only is the Lighthouse charming, It is a cleverly designed lodging- and has been praised by a notable architect guest for it's creative use of geometry, timberframing, and blend of luxurious appointments while retaining economy of space.

Perfect place to rescue my weary soul
There are many reasons why I loved staying at the lighthouse, I am afraid my description will fail in comparison to my actual experience! I went to Grand Marais in January for a class at the folk school (highly encourage you to check it out!). Since I was traveling by myself having a studio didn't create privacy issues. According to the advertisement the lighthouse was a good fit due to the decent price, beautiful pictures, & location perfect to the school.
Prior to getting there I received a lovely video from Todd the owner showing me where to park, & made me feel at home. There was about 2 feet if snow but they had perfectly shoveled paths that lead to different areas depending where u needed to go. The actual lighthouse was warm & bright despite it being a dreary January day!
The place is small, I feel like it's similar to the size of my bedroom at home! But if you are like me, I love going to IKEA where they have that area showing how to decorate small living areas. I found the smallness to be good for me because it took away all the excess in my life & let me live simply for a few days.
ANYWAY, enough of my subjective feelings I could go in for hours!
-Perfect place for one person or two people who love to share everything.
-Perfect location, I walked everywhere took my 3 minutes to get there the school, a brewery, coffee shop, places to eat.
-Very nice owners who know the area.
Thanks! We are very proud of the Lighthouse and it warms our heart to hear about your experience. See you again someday. Todd and Susan.
The little box at the top of the stairs
Magical, cozy, comfortable. Loved the views. Easy parking and access. We loved the layout, and listening to WTIP on the old fashioned radio. Our 30th wedding anniversary was so enjoyable thanks to the Lighthouse, we had a great Thanksgiving dinner at Naniboujou Lodge too. Saw the sea smoke on a cold morning, and a freighter passing on the lake. Great communication with the owner, we would definitely rent this property again.
We’ll definitely be back! Unique, cozy & secluded get-away even though next to cool “downtown”.
Owner really knows the area well and can suggest ideas and locations for hikes, restaurants etc. Great value for this super cool venue.
Great View/Squeaky Clean Minimalism
This is an amazing unique little place with an awesome view. Walking distance to everything. Quiet and private in the midst of other private units. Extremely well built. The wind howled outside but there was nary a squeak out of the building. Rock solid door for safety. It was just the thing for a quick retreat getaway. Comfy bed...
The stairs are STEEP! Not for anyone with knee or balance issues. Watch out for the throw rug glued to some board. I tripped over it. There is always some odd thing with the VRBO’s. And the step at the bottom of the stairs is higher than you would expect. The owner even tripped on it carrying my bags up. Thank you for that by the way! Very friendly and hospitable place.
Thanks! It is a full flight of stairs but they are no steeper than any common design. Without them there would be no view :-) The first step will be getting it's concrete pad either this fall or early spring as part of the completion of the private tree lined pathway to the street.
A charming space overlooking the town and the harbor
We loved our stay at the Lighthouse. It meet our needs perfectly and cannot wait to stay again!
Thank you! Looking forward to hosting you again. Todd and Susan
A Short Walk to Downtown, Yet Surprisingly Private
We really enjoyed our second visit to The Lighthouse. Todd and Susan were gracious hosts from the moment we made the reservation and continuing throughout the stay. The space itself is comfortable, clean, full of character, and perfect for the two of us for the three-night visit. While it's right in town, providing an easy walk to downtown amenities, it's surprisingly private and quiet. In our opinion, it's much better than a hotel room for close to the same price.
Thank you so much for the kind review and for the return visit. Take care and come back and see us for the third time! Todd and Susan
