About the property

Light and airy apartment in medieval stone town-house ( 1524 )

Le Cantou is set in a beautiful 16 century stone town-house. Located on the second floor, this apartment offers you the chance to enjoy the area of Sarlat by foot and by car. This beautiful apartment itself is bright and airy with high ceilings. The bedroom is located in a cosy alcove and has a very comfortable double bed, two bedside tables, lamps and a chest of drawers. The living/dining area ' centre piece' is a beautiful stone fireplace. Located in the living area are two armchairs, two foot-stalls and a coffee table. In the dining area there is a table and 4 chairs for the wonderful meals you can cook from market produce. The kitchen is located in another alcove and is equipped with a fridge with an ice box compartment, oven and hob, washing machine and coffee machine. As you leave the apartment you step right into the main square of medieval Sarlat, along with its cobbled streets, little shops, restaurants, superb market and art galleries.

Things to do:: The Dordogne region provides an fascinating array of sites and activities

It houses the most magnificent and interesting sites of the Palaeolithic era in Europe with troglodyte shelters and caves, the most famous being Lascaux , cave paintings of 15,000-year-old galloping horses, reindeer, bison, and ibex. Although the original is now closed Lascaux 2 is equally interesting, also Font de Gaume is worth a visit.

From fairytale Château Milandes, to the flamboyant Hautefort and fortresses like Castlenaud to Bastides, like Domme & Belves, also pretty villages set into the cliff faces – La Roque Gageac and Beynac. also the fabulous gardens of Eyirgnac and Marqueyssac , giving you plenty of sites to see, whether by car, bike, foot , canoe or Balloon you will experience a holiday of memories.

Restaurants, cafes and markets are a speciality..In this region you will find Duck everywhere on the menu. Among the markets which have an array of fresh produce you will find:

Truffles, foie gras, wild mushrooms like cepes, girolles and morels, also walnuts, confits (meats preserved in fat) and fine country meats, chestnuts, strawberries, wines, liquors and brandies…and of course the famous cheeses..

So after your hectic day of sightseeing, relax in the centre of Sarlat, watch the world go by knowing you are only a few minutes walk from your apartment 'Le Cantou'

The Dordogne enjoys a more settled weather pattern than UK or Ireland, although it does have rain enriching the region with green fields in the winter months. It has a varied temperature, starting off cool in the mornings and heating up as the day goes along…layers are the best clothing to bring. In the summer-time the average temperature is around 30 ‘C..

The nearest airport is Bergerac, with airlines Ryan air and Flybe.

The new Brive Airport has flights from London with CityJet. Slightly further away you can get flights into Limoges, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Rodez..

From Calais the car journey is around 10 hours.

There is a train service from Paris to Bordeaux, then change to Sarlat. There is also a service from Paris to Souillac, then a shuttle bus to Sarlat.

In Sarlat there are car hire services such as Europcar, which is in walking distance from Sarlat train station.

Notes:
Le Cantou is set in a medieval town house in the centre of historical Sarlat. Unfortunately there is no parking in the historical centre, but there is free parking 200 metres away. The apartment is on the second floor of a stone spiral staircase, and has a lovely view of the courtyard below and the roof tops above. The apartment has 3 huge windows and a fan so plenty of ventilation. The Tourist office is 2 minutes walk away from the apartment..where you can browse through the delights that the region has to offer. During the summer months, Sarlat is bustling with festivals of music, theatre and the street theatre, and of course not forgetting the Film Festival in November, the truffle festival in january, the duck festival in february ......

Historical and romantic apartment

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed for a week. I was just amazed that we were temporarily living in a building with such history. The building was built around 1525 and even with all the mod cons still retains it's original structure and character. It is also very comfortable, romantic and very centrally located. Emmanuel the owner met us on arrival in Sarlat and took us to the apartment. He was incredibly hospitable and talked us through how everything worked. He bought us a nice bottle of red and put it in the apartment for our arrival. I highly recommend this as a place to stay. Thanks Emmanuel for making us feel so welcome!

Loved the apartment and the location. Kitchen was a little small, but we made it work. Owner was the best. He left a Christmas tree for us and two small presents. Beautifully decorated to historical style. We stayed an entire month and hated to leave.

Perfect, cozy home from home

  • 5 of 5

Ideal central location and warm, tasteful interior design make for perfect vacation rental, particularly with the recent addition of very high-speed wi-fi and multi-channel TV . Emmanuel (Owner) is extremely helpful and is always available to answer any questions or make thoughtful recommendations as to restaurants, sights, etc. In the past, he has even been so kind as to pick us up at the train station. We have just returned home from our second 2-week stay in this apartment and we miss it already. We would not dream of staying anywhere else in Sarlat - or in the entire Dordogne region for that matter - and will most likely reserve "our" apartment for another visit next year. Reserve this apartment with confidence that you will have a delightful, carefree stay in one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Perfect apartment in wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

This lovely apartment had everything in it we required for a lovely vacation. It was spotlessly clean and stylishly decorated. The location is perfect for a visit to all the attractions of the Dordogne area. Emmanuel, the owner, was very welcoming and gave us lots of information about the area, including restaurant recommendations and suggestions for what not to miss during our stay. For those who enjoy an active holiday the walking and cycling in the area were great - wonderful views and lots of challenging hills. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this property to anyone.

Perfectly Enchanting!

  • 5 of 5

We adored staying in this lovely studio apartment located in a medieval tower in the center of Sarlat. It was a perfect location between the cathedral and the main square. A wine cellar, glacier and chocolatier were steps from the front door of the tower. The outside market burst to life every Wednesday and Saturday morning. A nearby bakery provided freshly baked croissants daily. The apartment was very comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated complete with flawless wifi. We loved the ancient masonry, darkbeams, high ceilings and shuttered windows. We felt at home with everything we needed for a delightful stay. Emmanuel was a gracious and attentive host with great restaurant recommendations and even helped us find our way driving to Sarlat in the dark with failed GPS. The free parking is just a short walk away. Every time we returned to our medieval apartment after a day of exploring nearby villages, canoeing on the rivers, cycling on the greenway, and eating wonderful food, we just couldn't believe how beautiful it all was.

Sarlat has been described as 'the jewel in the crown' with its medieval centre restored to its 17th century magnificence with such perfection that it is lit at night by gas lamps and is the set for a myriad of French movies. There are numerous 'plus beaux villages de France' in the area including Beynac. La Roque-Gageac, St-Leon-sur-Vezere, Domme, and Belves and the town markets are some of the finest in France, with many designated as 'marches de France.' .

The natural beauty of the area can be explored on the many well marked hiking and bike trails or by renting kayaks or canoes all along the Dordogne and Vezere rivers. A trip to buy groceries along the country lanes through the forest, over the hills and along the rivers is a treat in itself. With your apartment tucked into a charming medieval alley off the main square you can avail of the superb market, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Other Activities: Canoe/kayak, Ballooning, rock climbing, caving
