Good value in a beautiful setting

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for just over two weeks (Dec 2016 - Jan 2017)

If you are looking to slow down, eat healthy, practise yoga and enjoy quiet walks through rice fields then stay at this house in this area.

Pros:

- Great location! Located outside of busy downtown Ubud in the quiet rice fields of Penestanan

- Close to many recommended restaurants, cafes (about 20 meters from Yellow Flower Cafe - great vegetarian restaurant with some meat options and 25 meters from Intuitive Flow Yoga - great yoga studio overlooking rice fields)

- About 20 minutes walk to Ubud and other rice field treks like Campuhan ridge trail

- The house itself is good for two people, bedroom is located upstairs with a view of the rice fields. It was nice to wake up to the sunrise.

- Downstairs, there is a sitting area that opens up to a very small enclosed garden, basic kitchen with 1 stove burner, fridge and 1 bathroom.

- The owner is very responsive and the caretaker and family were very helpful and responsive to our needs. Caretaker's son was very friendly and povided our transportation from Kuta to Ubud (1.5 hrs).

- The house is clean and the photos are accurate.

Things to note:

- there is no pool so if you need to cool down, you can go the Mansion hotel (about a 20 minute walk) to use their pool for the day for about $5 Canadian.

- No air conditioning, just ceiling fans and a couple of table top fans

- there is a mosquito net but expect to get mosquito bites and other insect bites.

- Do not stay here if you have mobility issues as you have to walk narrow, uneven paths and stairs.

- You will need a flashlight to navigate the paths at night

- some minor issues which I'm sure will be repaired soon - the ceiling fan on the first floor didn't work, some of the light bulbs in the bathroom and outside were burnt out. The blades for the blender were not sharp enough to cut fruit to make smoothies.

Location, Location, Location...Fantastic Little Balinese Villa in Penestanan

  • 5 of 5

I'll start with the neighborhood. The house is located in the charming artist's village of Penestanan which adjoins Ubud on the west. The village is set in a system of paved footpaths winding throughout the lush jungle. The best part is the majority of the footpaths are pedestrian only. No pesky, loud and foul-smelling motorbikes are allowed! This makes for delightful walks and a peaceful night's sleep. Intuitive Flow Yoga studio, massage spas, restaurants, the large Bintang supermarket (with international items & ATM), laundry shop, motorbike rentals & more are all located on the Penestanan footpaths. A true walker's paradise. Yet, just down the Campuhan stairs (turn right when exiting the villa & you will find the stairs 100 m down the path) you exit the village and have entered into Ubud. Follow this major road to the right and you will be in the city center in about 1 km. Also, the beautiful Campuhan Ridge Trail is 450 m from the stairs (best running route in Ubud). The neighborhood couldn't be any better, so close to everything and yet when your in it, you feel like you're deep in the jungle.

The house itself was clean, comfortable, very private and contained everything we needed. We stayed for two months and didn't have to buy a single item for the house. I rarely find this to be the case, but this house had everything: cookware, fans, drinking water supplied, clothes drying rack, safe for your valuables, umbrellas, extra towels and linens (which were cleaned and replenished regularly). The house is depicted well in the pictures. The bed was very comfortable and included a top sheet (not common in SE Asia). Housekeeping was great. Quiet at night. The only sounds were of running water from the rice fields, geckos, birds, frogs & sometimes rain...so peaceful.

Last, but not least, the owner & house manager. There was an issue with a neighbor's dog barking. The owner was notified. The situation was quickly handled. The owner was very responsive and concerned. Many thanks Patrice, you really went above and beyond! The house manager, Wayan, lives a few doors down. She and her husband were readily available, very friendly and a valuable source of info about the city, food & culture. A special thanks to her as well. She made sure we had what we needed. She even waded through water & rain late at night to change the gas canister behind the house when we ran out of cooking fuel. A million thanks to a great team!!

Know before you go.......

  • 2 of 5

Before you book this property you need to know that it is not accessible by road. The last quarter of a mile starts with 16 steep, narrow concrete steps up. Next you go up, down, and around narrow lanes and finally take a path that borders a steep ravine. Not fun at night carrying luggage. I was hesitant to go out after dark. The house itself is clean and new and the bed is very comfortable. However, it was a bit too remote for my tastes. It is a long walk into town from the house.

Owner's Response: Thank you for choosing Bulan Cenick and for sharing your experience with us. As in the description, the house is a 25 minute-walk to downtown Ubud and 10 minutes-walk from the main road. It may take a little extra effort to walk to the house but you will be rewarded with a tranquil and traffic noise free location.
