Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom/2 Bath Home With Everything! 2-6 guests

This home has three bedrooms, two full tiled baths, a large kitchen, living room/dining room, a family room and separate laundry room. It has a big front deck with mountain views and flowering container plants everywhere. The deck is shaded by a big apricot tree, just delightful on a hot afternoon. There is also a back covered portal/patio with table and chairs, BBQ and of course more plants. There is ample parking and surrounding garden spaces. A fun addition is 'The bunkhouse' a perfect spot for the young or young at heart. The home sleeps 2-6 in beds. There is also a family room sofa sleeper and bunk house sleeps two. The Bunk house is summer lodging although there is a heater and electric mattress pads...

The home is furnished with my antiques, consignment store and yard sale treasures, original art, folk art pieces and my whimsical style throughout. All bedding, towels, kitchen supplies and appliances are new and inviting.

If all this is not enough, my home is a five minute walk through a pleasant historic neighborhood to the downtown Plaza area with shops, galleries and restaurants.

There is an additional one bedroom casita on the property (separate parking and fenced for privacy) which will sleep two(vrbo 490376.) If you choose to also rent this casita this Compound can sleep 6 guests in beds. A truly perfect getaway for 2- 6 guests!

If Casa Madre is booked for your dates please look at Casa Grande Vrbo 860840 which is another one of my homes. Also three bedrooms and two baths and walking distance to the Plaza.

About Melissa /Taos mgr.

Some women collect shoes. Some collect husbands. I seem to collect houses!

I am the VRBO Queen of Taos with two homes, a downtown apartment and now another house and soon (within the month) a little casita for guests.

I so enjoy buying old adobes, remodeling and reviving and then furnishing them and renting them to visitors. My houses are always booked and I get great reviews.

I am a busy Taos woman. Aside from my vacation rentals, I own a fun, eclectic downtown shop called Red Cat Melissiana. The name is a combination of my red cat Nellie and my name. Melissiana is a made up word and means 'anything I want since it's my shop'. I have unique gifts, flowers and lingerie in a wonderful old adobe building with great history on a street known as 'The Garden Street of Taos' planted of course by me. I am active in my community, on two board of directors and certainly never have a bored moment.

I moved to Taos 8 years ago from the San Francisco Bay area after raising my three children as a successful landscaper. I wanted a small town with lots to do, real mountains and four seasons. I got all this and more. I can't imagine living anywhere else and love sharing my town with my guests.

Melissa /Taos mgr. purchased this house in 2013

Why Melissa /Taos mgr. chose Taos

I've known this home for years. A friend of mine owned it and I often went to garage sales at the house. It had a nice feel to it and I liked the location. It went into foreclosure two years ago and I honestly forgot about it. I had enough else going on. A real estate friend of mine mentioned it to me and we went to see it. I immediately saw the incredible potential as a wonderful vacation rental, but no longer had my 'California money or California mentality'

My mom is 96 and talked about wanting to do something for me while she was still alive to enjoy it. She wrote a check and I had another house.

I bought it in March and it was quite the challenge, but 4 months later I have an amazing showcase vacation rental!

Thanks mom! I've named it 'Casa Madre' for you!!!

What makes this house unique

This home has a wonderful feeling to it. Ok, part of it is my style and taste I know, but it is inviting and friendly with a spacious, yet cozy feeling.

Floors are wood or mexican tile, there are lots of windows and it has a welcoming feel.

The house is constructed of 'cross ties' which are railroad ties, but not treated with creosote so the walls are thick and it is cool on the warmest days. I splurged on two gas log stoves for that fireplace feel without the firewood chore. All rooms now have heat. It must have been quite chilly in the past, but will now be warm in the winter.

The house has a nice layout and will be comfortable for one to three couples in the three bedrooms.

The neighborhood is great. Nice homes, peaceful and quiet. Birdsong in the day, crickets at night and occasionally the intriguing sound of someone's peacock! (A peacock in Taos? I swear it is...)

There are two homes on the property, but each have their own parking area, are separated by gardens and a fence so everyone maintains a sense of privscy.

The property is completely fenced and I am a dog friendly lady who knows how many folks travel with their pet.

This is a very special home and I am proud to offer it as a vacation rental.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Melissa, we had a wonderful stay in your house. So cozy and tons of character and charm!

We especially appreciated the fully stocked kitchen. Made cooking so much more pleasant.

We look forward to coming back for another visit.

Comfortable, creative in-town rental

  • 5 of 5

We were completely comfortable in Melissa's bright, funky, creative home. The house has a great flow to it with space for everyone to hang out and not be on top of each other. There are plenty of windows that open up to let in the high mountain breeze and gorgeous natural. We thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor spaces including the patio off the kitchen, which was great for morning coffee and family dinners, as well as the back porch where we enjoyed a glass of wine under a beautiful tree and conversed late into the night. <3

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review. Yes this is a special home. I had so much fun furnishing and decorating it and glad guests enjoy this too. Love the rear covered portal and front deck with the big apricot tree. Thanks for your heads up on step down to laundry room. I am having my handyman paint a blue strip there.

All 3 of us loved this home. The art work is wonderful.

  • 5 of 5

Loved the comfortable, eclectic environment of the home. Also liked the outdoor seating areas for meals and reading. A bit more overhead light would be nice. Generally lived this home, close to downtown and it is very quiet.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed the home and outdoor spaces. This time of year is so perfect for enjoying the outdoors. Before I know it will be time to turn off irrigation and pull container plants. Always sad but then get to look forward to next years plantings. I will check ceiling lighting which is what I think you must mean since I have lots of lamps in all rooms. Perhaps some of the bulbs in ceiling fan/lights need replacing so thanks for heads up. Quante hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful quite quante home in Taos. We were pleasantly surprised how beautiful this home was. Very clean and well stocked. Southwestern design was fun. Even though the home is old, it is very well maintained and clean. Beds were comfortable if you like a little softer mattress (we like a Hard mattress, but these are still very comfortable, can't please everyone)! .We will still here again if we visit Taos. Loved it!!

House is Eclectic

  • 2 of 5

The house itself is a beautiful home. But............if you are a Christian as our family are Christians, you will not feel welcomed or comfortable. I prayed and prayed our entire stay. I have never rented a home or cabin or anything like this with type of decor. Our group of 4 are all world travelers and have never experienced this type of decor. In the future I will be looking closer at the decor. As soon as we drove up, you will see a large picture of: Dias De Los Muertos. I thought OH NO!!!!! my thinking was, OK its outside. But when you go into the home, the house is decorated in this theme. Our bathroom had 2 hangings of Dias De Los Muertos and a devils head hanging on the wall. I took them all down and put them in the little cubby in the bathroom. VERY CREEPY!!!!. I was born in New Mexico and I still live in New Mexico. I understand this culture and its NOT Christian. Some people may find this decor amusing.

The living room & kitchen are very dark. We had to use a lamp to wash dishes at 7 p.m. the ceiling light fixture had 1- 25 watt bulb, the fixture took 3 bulbs, we found another 25 watt bulb and 2-25 watt light bulbs are not enough light to reach the sink. The bedrooms are very will lit, there are only curtain sheers covering the windows, if you are an early riser and dont mind dressing with the possibility of peeping toms, these bedrooms are perfect for you.

The house is too hot with all the windows and doors open and all the ceiling fans running. Very uncomfortable for night time sleeping. It does cool off to a comfortable degree about 3 A.M., you will have a cooling period between 3 and 9 am. As I stated above washing dishes at 7 p.m., my sister and I were drenched in sweat. Thank God we were going to watch the fireworks and turned on the A/C in the car on high to cool off.

The 2 queen beds are liking sleeping on a sheet of plywood. If you only had 1 person sleeping in each bed, you could probably find a comfortable position. This is the opinion of 4 people, not just 1 Goldilocks.

The 3rd bed, nobody slept in, but....just by looking at the bed, very saggy.

By the way: if you uses cream or lotions, you will not be able to in this home. There are signs on both bathroom mirrors: do not use lotions or creams because the bed sheets are being stained. NM is a very dry climate and lotions & creams are a necessity.

As far as the list on the fridge, cleaning the home, we are very clean people. That is our normal schedule upon departure.

Owner's Response: Wow! This review contains a lot of firsts! Actually it was kind of the laugh I needed today. Where do I start??? Dia de Los Muertas is a favorite theme in Northern New Mexico . It does not intend to negate or defile Christianity in any way. The holiday on November 1st is actually a way for people to connect with loved ones who have passed over. Obviously you did not see the sign by the kitchen sink saying to turn on under cabinet l.e.d lights. They offer more than enough illumination for sink and counter tops, but must be switched on to work. This home is built of untreated railroad ties and the walls are almost a foot thick. I don't believe I have gotten complaints of heat from previous guests and ceiling fans have kept air moving and pleasant temperatures. Of course this IS the hottest summer even lifelong Taos residents can recall. I always reply to bed comments by saying the Goldilocks story, but you beat me to it. Some say too hard, some too soft and some just right... As far as lotions and creams go I pride myself on top quality linens and all too often cream and lotion stains do not come out. I am sorry you found my home so upsetting. I would hope that future prospective guests read my many positive reviews and make up their own minds regarding booking

Charming, roomy, comfy retreat

  • 5 of 5

Photos don’t do justice to this completely charming, quirky, spacious, comfy house. We three friends looked forward to coming “home” every day after rambling around Taos and exploring Santa Fe. The house is big enough that we could all have privacy when we wanted, indoors and out. The roomy kitchen was perfect for group cooking, and was supplied with everything we needed. The charming neighborhood just a short stroll from shops, restaurants and galleries was quiet and friendly. Melissa’s raffish, offbeat taste in furnishings and art amused and delighted us. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed my home. It is a great house isn't it? So difficult for me to believe it had been in foreclosure for two years when I bought it and no one else saw the potential. I'm glad it worked for your gals reunion and as you said had private as well as public spaces. I too love this neighborhood for its peace and quiet and the walk to the Plaza. Yes I do have fun furnishing and decorating and got a chuckle for "Raffish, offbeat taste comment! Do come again in summer with all my gardens, containers and shade trees are there to enjoy.

Taos Family Christmas - 2017

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time during our stay! The accommodations were perfect for our family of five. Three bedrooms and two living areas helped give everyone their space. The gas heaters would keep the house warm and cozy. We enjoyed the 15-minute walk to the plaza to do some shopping and visiting the Kit Carson Museum. We used the grill one night, and Melissa had provided plenty of supplies for our use. We also ended up purchasing paper goods for meals due to no dishwasher. Another couple would join us for meals, so washing seven plates was a lot to clean. We would definitely stay here again.
