About Alison Buehler

I always wanted to be Laura Ingles Wilder. I read every book and watched every episode as a kid, and I guess it stuck. My family decided to start the The Homestead Retreat Center when one too many friends stood in our garden and said, 'Y'all should teach this stuff.' This 'stuff' includes all the things we have learned over the past six years as we transformed our home and five acres into a modern homestead, including, chickens, orchards, vegetable gardens, a greenhouse, solar panels, and a grey water and cistern system. Mississippi is rich with practical know-how, but much of that information has been lost in an era of cheap energy and convenience. We value knowing how to do real things! The purpose of the Homestead Center is to help Mississippians rediscover fading skills by combining the best of our past knowledge with our current improvements and technologies.

We hope to share our experiences with our community and our state. We moved out of our original homestead, and turned the old homestead into a rental, teaching, learning, demonstration center. We pay for the center with our special events, rental facilities and Homestead memberships.

Alison Buehler purchased this farmhouse in 2007

Why Alison Buehler chose Mississippi

Charles Bouchillon built the Homestead Retreat as a dream house for his family, his wife, and four teenagers in 1974. He was an engineer at MS State and designed and built the home in the shape of an airplane - pointed at the front with two wings coming out the sides. There is a great story about he and a guy named 'Tiny.' Tiny helped Charles place the great, old beams together and when the last one fit he said, 'I'll be damned, it worked!'

It is truly a unique place with lots of beautiful windows and just as many quirks to make it special. I have heard more people say, 'This place has such a good feeling!' It does and we want to share that with you and your friends and family.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Everyone who stays at the Homestead Retreat says it has such a special feel. The Homestead is not luxury, but it is clean, comfortable, peaceful and relaxing! It allows people to slow down, unwind and reconnect to the best Mississippi has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is a great place, very spacious, on a nice little lake, many bonus features: huge salt water pool, nice herb and vegetable gardens and chickens laying fresh eggs for breakfast (no crowing rooster ;~)) Enjoyed the gorgeous kitchen, sitting on the porch and by the lake.

Great place for our family. We were there for a wedding.

  • 5 of 5

The kids loved the zip line and pool. Great place to fellowship in the great room which had 3 dining tables. We had 3 different board games going at once one night. We did a bonfire one night and roasted marshmallows Zour kids said this was the greatest place we ever stayed.

Wonderful place for a reunion.

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Homestead over the weekend for our family reunion. The quiet, private atmosphere was perfect. The big kitchen, dining area, and living room gave us plenty of room to laugh, talk, play games, eat, and make happy memories. The play room downstairs was perfect for an afternoon entertainment I had planned. The pool was great for cooling off, and the lake and grounds around the house were picturesque..

Perfect home for a large gathering!

  • 5 of 5

This house is incredible! There is so much room that despite having 20+ people staying there, it felt open and airy. The kitchen is surprisingly well stocked and the linens are plentiful. There was seating for all of us at mealtime so we were able to dine together which we haven't been able to do at previous reunion locations. The grounds are wonderful with mature trees, a beautiful lake view, and a sparkling clear pool. We especially loved the goats and chickens! The property is tucked away in a quiet area yet Starkville is just a short drive away. Alison is delightful and extremely helpful....she knows the true meaning of southern hospitality! Thank you, Alison, for a wonderful stay!!!

House was not very clean

  • 1 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and everything was well stocked as advertised. The pool was fun, the lake was pretty, but no fish. We had some problems with the hot water heater, but when we learned how to reset it everything was OK. The interior of the house was very nice and relaxing, but there was dust and sand everywhere. our 2 year old grandson was filthy from crawling on the great room rug. If you want your deposit back they give you a list of things you have to do that is way to much for a weekend stay. Now I know why, because it doesn't get cleaned by anyone else. Cob webs around dirty windows, spiders crawling on the couch, bathtubs downstairs hadn't been cleaned in a while. I know it's an old home with no one living there, but you could at least have someone vacuum the rugs and all before you rent it out. And don't ask the renters to clean it for you to get their deposit back.

A nice place to stay, but rather pricey for what you get. Web site miss leads you. I am really thinking of calling the Better Business Bureau and report them.

Owner's Response: The house is cleaned before and after each rental for the same price as the cleaning deposit. Our cleaning woman cares deeply for The Homestead and has never had a complaint before. Fishing is not allowed by renters as stated in our agreement - this is a neighborhood policy. Neither was smoking or leaving butts on the property.

Peaceful and spacious

  • 5 of 5

Our family came from CA, TX and MD to celebrate our daughter's graduation from MS Veterninary College of Medicine. The property was perfect for us and provided plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and indoors. We say goodbye to Starkville for the last time but will leave with many great memories. Go Bulldogs!

  • 5 of 5

House is Giant with plenty of Space. Lots of Beds. Nobody Felt on top of one another. Figuring out which light switch works with which set of lights was a challenge and the Dinning Room Switch in the Front Closet was a true challenge. Huge Yard and Lots of Places to explore for the Kids in Our Group. Easy to contact Host & Very Responsive to questions & issues.
