About the property

Bike, walk, climb, swim and canoe or kayak, or just enjoy the peace and quiet

Once home to a working artist, this comfortable and well equipped two-bedroom house offers peace & relaxation. Nearby Ragged Mountain, Mt. Kearsarge, and our numerous lakes and ponds, and lovely Mountain Brook will provide inspiration for the artistic soul.

Relax on the screened porch surrounded by a nearly wild cottage garden and watch baby birds learn to fly. Enjoy the collection of books, original art, and antiques while relaxing in comfortable seating and queen-sized platform beds. The dining room has a roomy table that will seat 6. In the gallery, a games table with a selection of games and puzzles is at one end, and a comfy futon sofa and smart TV with DVD player occupies the other. The whole house gets wifi.

Our area offers four distinct seasons of widely differing weather, conditions, and experiences from our crisp, cool autumns with their brilliantly colored autumn leaves to icy, snowy sub-zero winter conditions. Spring is lovely and summer can be hot and sultry, or mild and pleasant.

Two bicycles are available to ride around on the country roads, or about a mile and a half ride will take you to the Northern Rail Trail, which then offers 56 miles of biking through scenic NH countryside and villages.

It is a short drive to two trails to the top 2700' Mt. Kearsarge, one easy and the other moderately challenging. Other mountains are well within range. Several lakes and ponds with beaches and boat launches are within easy reach, and our quiet country roads and trails throughout the neighborhood offer endless walking options. Ocean beaches and the spectacular White Mountains are about two hours away.

Winter guests can snowshoe and cross-country ski in the woods and fields just outside the front door, or rent skis for use on a nearby groomed trail system. Ragged Mountain Ski Area is 17 miles away, Mt. Sunapee is 24 miles, and many others are within range.

The wicker furniture on the screened porch will entice you to spend hours lounging and watching the nesting phoebes, and the hummingbirds and butterflies. Look for wild turkeys and deer in the field across the road and watch the fireflies and listen to the owls at night. We sometimes see moose, foxes, and other less common creatures in the neighborhood.

While this house isn't wheelchair accessible, one bedroom, the full bath, and all the main rooms are on one floor and parking is a level, short walk to the house entrance, which has one step. If you have special needs we will do whatever we can to help.

The garden is gradually coming back after twenty years of neglect. There is assortment of culinary herbs and flowers out the front door, and a palette of perennial flowers from spring to fall. The wonderful views of forest and fields will be enriched by a foreground of colorful flowers.

The town of New London, about 10 miles away, offers fine dining, a range of shops, and a good summer theater. The cities of Concord, Hanover, Lebanon, and Tilton offer movie theaters and shopping.

About Susan E. Schnare

Andy and Susan bought this house in July 2013 to preserve a rare example of New England architecture and a vanishing lifestyle. Now the Artist's House has become a place where people can relax and enjoy our corner of rural New Hampshire. We live next door with our horses and collies, and look forward to having some wonderful neighbors. We will do whatever we can to make your visit enjoyable.

Why Susan E. Schnare chose Andover

I have been in and out of this house all my life and have enjoyed numerous cups of tea at table the table by the kitchen window. When the opportunity arose It seemed essential to preserve the house, with its furnishings and garden in its setting of woodlands and pasture.

What makes this house unique

This is a unique house of abundant charm and character. The central part of the house was built about 1780 as a farmhouse while Andover was still being settled. Original beams and floors, a cast-iron cook stove (not in use at this time), and vintage furnishings provide the ambiance of an earlier time. The wood-paneled, two-story addition contains a comfortable bedroom and modern bathroom on each floor. The upstairs bedroom, the most charming room in the house in my opinion, looks out to woods, garden, and mountain views in three directions. Fall asleep listening to owls and rustling leaves, and watching the fireflies.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Living in New York I couldn't wait to get out of the city! Staying in 'The Artists Cottage' where we had a girls get together, was the perfect antidote!

All being artists we appreciated the fact that an artist had lived a long life there and some of her art work is still in the cottage. Susan and Andy, the owners have also kept some antiques which belonged to 'the artist', so it's filled with interesting bits and bobs. It also has all the modern amenities you might need. It's obviously been lovingly restored. Although it wasn't on when we were there favorite thing was a beautiful wood burning stove in the kitchen, real craftsmanship.

The house is near Andover, but well away from any main roads. Susan and Andy couldn't have been more helpful when we needed suggestions for walks, food shopping etc. Our favorite walk was into the woods opposite the cottage. It takes you down to the edge of a good sized lake which must be fantastic in the summer! Hopefully I'll experience that in the future!

If you want a little bit of calm amidst the storm of life ......go and stay at 'The Artist's Cottage'!

Quintessential New Hampshire charm! Enjoyed a beautiful “white Christmas” Christmas tree and all!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful stay, everything you need to cook with. Easy access to both Interstates @ 15 minutes to each. Far enough from the business but close enough to easily enjoy mountains, cities and lakes. Highly Recommend! We stayed in the winter and owners were kind enough to contact us by email and let us know that we should consider arriving early in the day because of predicted winter weather arriving on our arrival date!

Can't Wait to be Back

  • 5 of 5

Perfectly authentic New England charm! It was a privilege to stay here. Andy and Susan have preserved a true gem. The quiet country roads are perfect for long(or short!) walks, and the substantial collection of books(every interesting topic you can imagine) are the perfect supplement to a restful afternoon(as is the screen porch!) There is wifi and TV if you want it, but you won't need it often as there are lots of birds to watch, and simply marvelling at the amazing floor boards will keep you busy! The bedrooms have everything you need, as do the bathrooms and kitchen---including great napkins and a variety of dishes and such. It was also really nice to have a washer and dryer! The nearby towns of Andover, New London and Franklin were fun to explore, and we looked forward to returning to the Artist's House each night. Though we didn't have the pleasure of knowing the artist...her home is a remarkable homage to her, and a really enjoyable place to meeting someone that feels like they've been a friend forever. We highly, confidently recommend it and will encourage every visitor we meet with enthusiastic insistence---stay here!

A picturesque quiet spot to enjoy natures splendor

  • 5 of 5

The property is as nice as the pictures look! It is quite close to the road but its a very quiet country road. Your hosts Susan and Andy are gracious, helpful and give you plenty of space. There are lovely walks nearby and it is so nice to be able to BRing your dogs along to also enjoy this wonderful spot.

You dont have to think of everything, either. There is every type of kitchen pan or utensil you need. A welcoming bowl of water was in place for the dogs and even some new hampshire maple syrup. Yum!

Wonderful Fall experience in New Hampshire

  • 5 of 5

The cottage "Country House With a Screened Porch" was a real treat. All the of appliances were modern and the wood floors, walls and ceilings were warm and comfortable. Foliage in October was absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed a week's stay and would love to do it again,

It was a wonderful experience to spend some time in this cottage.

Relaxing stay in a cozy, peaceful home

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the artist's house the first week of October. It was a wonderful, relaxing week. The house was clean, comfortable and tastefully furnished. Susan and Andy were excellent hosts and provided us with some starting provisions, including english muffins, strawberry preserves, cereal, local milk, coffee and syrup. That was a nice surprise. We saw some beautiful local fall foliage and drove the Kancamagus highway for some additional color. They had 2 bikes available that we used to ride on the rail trail. The ride from the train station at Potter's Place to East Andover and back was a great ride. We had numerous walks around the area with our dogs and hiked up Mount Major for a scenic view of Lake Winnipesaukee. Thank you, Susan and Andy!
