Rustic cabin in the pines
Clean and comfortable in the midst of clutter. Nice up to date bathroom. Working Wi-Fi a plus as there in no cell phone service in this area. Enjoyed the satellite TV to keep up with the outside world. A bit hard to find late at night ; and then there are the very irregular 25 steps down to the cabin. Not for the “faint of heart”.

Cabin in the woods
Overall as expected, nice house surrounded by trees. The directions to the house could be worded better but we eventually found it. Nice, quiet couple of days.

Nightmare cabin
The cabin was in such bad and unsafe conditions. We were suprised that someone would let rent the property in so dirty and unhygienic state. Upon entering the cabin there was unusual and unbearable smell that was reminiscent of animal urine and feces. The carpet was dirty, smelly, and stained. Entrance and patio was cluttered with objects indicating the place was being used a storage space. There was NO water coming from the bathroom shower. No one came to fix the water problem. The steps leading down to the cabin made of old, rotting, and loose wooden beams that posed falling hazard. Unleashed / strayed dogs roamed the property. There was impossible to stay and sleep there. My husband and I were forced to leave the cabin a few hours after arrival. I contacted the host but he was not willing to acknowledge the issues. This review should be a red flag to other people to stay AWAY from this cabin. All pictures and videos of this horrible place are taken and saved by myself.

Bad outweighs the good for us
The bad: the house is on a narrow one lane street on a hillside, next to a dilapidated neighbors house, & no gas station in town- not the fault of the owners. But upon entering, the patio is not lit and it was very dark in the early evening when we arrived, the light above door doesn’t work. The kitchen window is only partially covered with blinds, while the window next to the front door, and a window in one of the bedrooms did not have any covering. I had to tape paper to the window in the bedroom to avoid feeling exposed. The carpet is very stained, the railing on the deck outside is wobbly, the upholstery on the chairs at the kitchen table are all stained. I think all three beds are very old, two are extremely soft and you really sink in, the third was very hard. There is a blanket on the floor under part of the kitchen table covering where some carpet had been removed, which I wouldn't care about, but that blanket is also stained and looked pretty dirty. The remote for the ceiling fan (which was a must as we went on a hot weekend), was dirty. The good: it was quiet, the bathroom was clean, the kitchen was clean as were all the utensils/glasses, etc. The bedding was clean. It's nice to sit on the deck. There is no cell service but there is working wifi. The owner responded quickly when we let him know we were leaving a day early. I don't mind "rustic", in fact I sometimes search it out. But unfortunately we didn't like this listing and will not be back.

About the host

Hosted by Dean Labadie

Host profile image
I built the cabin (house) for my parents starting in 1968, added the two story addition in 1974. When my parents passed away in the late 90's, my two brothers and I purchased the house from the estate. In 2010, I remodeled replacing the deck, all new outside siding, double pane windows textured and painted the interior and added internet.

Why they chose this property

My father first visited this area in the 30's and we started vacationing here in the early 60's. My mother purchased the property during a bridge game and I started construction in 1968.

What makes this property unique

Set back from the road with plenty of parking, quiet mountain setting and comfortable beds. Small steam runs through the property and it is a short walk to the town. The cabin is within walking distance of the Yuba River and the Pacific Crest Trail. The Lakes Basin Area is a 6 mile drive. Downieville is 12 miles South on Highway 49 .
