There are a myriad of activities to enjoy on the farm. For the walkers or mountain bikers there are kilometers of footpaths around the 540 hectare farm for you to explore and for those wishing to venture further afield, the nearby peaks offer unrivalled views of the surrounding countryside. Serra d’Ossa lies at 500 metres above sea level and boasting one of the driest climates in Europe. The absence of light pollution makes this an astronomers’ paradise.
Bird watchers can enjoy seeking out over 70 species of birds in the unique habitat provided by the cork forest, several of our past guests are members of the RSPB and have made lists of the birds they have seen / heard. Here is a list of a few: White Stork, Booted Eagle, Red Kite, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Tawny Owl, Hoopoe, Red-Rumped Swallow, Great Bustard, Little Bustard and Bee Eater. Visitors to the local damn include black winged stilts and the occasional avocet. Very occasionally, bustards can be seen in the lower plains.
Within a one-hour drive from the farm, you can also explore nearby towns including Evora (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Estremoz famed for its Saturday morning market, Vila Viçosa with its two royal palaces, Reguengos and even neighbouring Spain.
Vineyards : While predominantly a hilly cork forest , a vineyard has recently been planted in an open valley producing Alicante Bouschet, Aragonêz, Touriga Nactional and Syrah quality grapes. Most of the grapes are sold; however a selection of the best quality grapes are retained for the production of a high quality red wine sold in Portugal under the Cem Reis label, and in the Netherlands under the Het Tientje name. This wine has been awarded silver medals in Wine Masters Challenge (Portugal), Mundus Vini (Germany), and Challenge Du Vin (France). Next year a white wine will also be produced from viognier grapes.

We thought the location was delightful, very peaceful and it was great to have access to a swimming pool albeit 800m away from the lodge. The Lodge itself was very small, little work space in the kitchen and few cooking utensils, in need of an update however the location and outside space made up for this. Recommend the Cork Trekking as a great way to see the area and also the megalith tour with Mario in Evora. The Lodge is approx. 2kms off the highway along an unmade road. The staff are lovely and helpful and you must try the wines produced here.
We stayed for two weeks in March 2016 and were delighted with the farm and its inhabitants, both two-legged and four-legged. It's a beautiful property as described on the website. We loved being surrounded by the soft sounds of the goat bells and seeing the new born lambs. Our hosts, Phillip and Marguerite are friendly, approachable and available. We also met Maroteira's resident guide and enjoyed an excellent 5km walk in the cork woodlands with him. We found the cabin accommodation good, a little small for two weeks and fairly rustic but clean and all more or less as described. Excellent tourist information had been left in the cabin for us and this was most helpful. Best of all, some wines from the estate left in a basket for us to choose , should we wish. We tried two reds and a rose and like them all. The farm's friendly dogs added to our enjoyment; they were frequent visitors but not a nuisance. We found plenty to do within driving distance of the farm and even ventured twice into Spain, to Merida and Caceres. The nearest attraction, the Convento Sao Paulo, was a revelation and if not for its recommendation by our farm guide we would have missed it. We would not hesitate to recommend this property to anybody - it's a lovely place for a holiday and we left feeling relaxed and refreshed, much more knowledgeable about cork farming and privileged to have had this experience.
Took a tour of the farm to learn about cork production, vineyards, and found out about acorn-fed black pigs. Fascinating! Really enjoyed the wine tasting. Lodge was cozy. Sky was Amazing - no light pollution. Piping hot croissants for breakfast were the best we ever had. Definitely recommend it.
The cork cottage was a comfortable place to stay during our stay in Eastern Alentejo. The property (Herdade da Maroteira) is gorgeous and the location perfect for daily explorations of the area, which includes many beautiful towns loaded with history and rolling countryside where cork trees and vineyards abound. You definitely will need a car, but you won't have to drive far to get good food, good markets and warm bread.
Philip is an excellent host, his kids hit it off with ours instantly and the dogs were mellow and docile--perfect companions for our walks around the property.
I would recommend this property heartily to anyone looking for a beautiful, quiet rural location from which to explore Alentejo's rich culture and history.
Nice landscape, wooden lodge with sufficient space to live at ease, kind dogs following you when you go walking, we immediatly felt like at home.
We went for 7 nights and stayed for 9. The wood lodge was a perfect base for exploring the surrounding Portuguese countryside. We even made day trips into Spain and visited Caceres and Merida. There is a new grocery store in town which allowed us to buy and cook our own food. There is a bbq for grilling right next to the cabin. Phillip and Marge are awesome hosts. Their wine is fabulous. We loved the dogs, especially Trash, who was always up for a walk on the property. The pool is very refreshing on a hot summer day. It is about a km down the road on the property, but you can walk through the cork forest or drive your car. If you need constant Internet access we would recommend staying in one of the other units. Phillip and Marge were great about letting us use their patio every day to upload our photos and work on our blog. This is a wonderful place to relax and experience the real Portugal. We heartily recommend it!
